History

[edit]

The 100.7 frequency was originally used in the 1940s by the owners of 1490WBAB as 100.7 WBAB-FM. However, WBAB-FM was gone by the early 1950s and the frequency was silent in the Atlantic-Cape May market for nearly a decade.

On December 17, 1959, the owners ofWCMC 1230 in Wildwoodsigned on the 100.7 frequency as WCMC-FM.[4] WCMC-FM was only powered at 3,500 watts, a fraction of its current output. WCMC-AM-FM mostlysimulcast amiddle of the road (MOR) format of popular adult music, news and sports. The FM frequency did break away from the AM station at times during thebaseball season by broadcastingPhiladelphia Phillies games.

In 1981, WCMC-FM changed itscall sign to WNBR and began playingadult contemporary music. The WCMC-FM call letterseventually wound up on a station inNorth Carolina.

On November 26, 1986, WNBR switched to WZXL, playing analbum rock format that continues to this day, although the style of rock music has changed over the years.

Once a year, WZXL has a listener appreciation party known as the "Bike Bash." Recent Bike Bashes have been held at theGolden Nugget casino and theHouse of Blues atShowboat Atlantic City.

On August 7, 2023, Equity Communications announced that it would sell WZXL, along with its three other FM stations in the Atlantic City-Cape May market, to iHeartMedia.[5] The acquisition was completed later that year on December 5.[6]
