WRFY-FM (102.5MHz) is acommercial radio station inReading, Pennsylvania, calling itself"Y102". The station is owned byiHeartMedia through licensee iHM Licenses, LLC, and broadcasts ahot adult contemporaryradio format. The studios and offices are on Perkiomen Avenue in Reading.[3]
WRFY-FM has aneffective radiated power (ERP) of 10,000 watts. Itstransmittertower is located on the east side of Reading on Neversink Mountain (40°19′19.0″N75°53′34.0″W / 40.321944°N 75.892778°W /40.321944; -75.892778).[4] The station's signal covers the cities ofLancaster,Allentown andPottsville and the northwestern suburbs ofPhiladelphia.[5] WRFY-FM broadcasts usingHD Radio technology. Its HD-2digital subchannel carries aSpanish-languagecontemporary hits format known as "Rumba 92.3", which feedsFM translatorW222BY.
On September 23, 1962, the station firstsigned on the air.[6] It was owned by the City Broadcasting Company as a stand-alone FM station. (In that era, most FM stations were co-owned with AM or TV stations but WRFY-FM was not.) Its original studios were inMount Penn.
By the 1970s, it had raised its power to 42,000 watts. Its tower is 807 feet (246 m)HAAT. It carried abeautiful music format, with quarter hour sweeps of instrumentalcover versions of popular adult songs, includingBroadway andHollywood show tunes. It was anaffiliate of theABC FM Network.
By the 1980s, it had switched to aTop 40 format.[7] It was affiliated with theRKO Radio Network for news and features. Over time, it moved in a more adult direction, making the transition tohot adult contemporary music.
In 1996, WRFY-FM was acquired byClear Channel Communications, along withWRAW.[8] In 2014, Clear Channel changed its name toiHeartMedia.
