Itsimulcasts asports radioformat withsister stationWNML990 AM and is owned byCumulus Media. The studios and offices are on Old Kingston Pike in theSequoyah Hills section of West Knoxville.
WNML-FM has aneffective radiated power (ERP) of 6,000watts. Thetransmitter is on Nicole Court, offU.S. Route 411, inMaryville.[3]
Most programming comes fromInfinity Sports Network. WNML-AM-FM are theflagship radio stations for both theTennessee SmokiesSouthern League Baseball radio network and theUniversity of TennesseeVol Network. The stations also carryKnoxville Ice Bears games in theSouthern Professional Hockey League.
The stationsigned on the air on January 5, 1989; 36 years ago (1989-01-05).[4] Its originalcall sign was WLOD-FM, and itscity of license wasLoudon, Tennessee. It was owned by Dick Broadcasting, with Allen Dick as thechief executive officer. In 1991, WNOX-AM-FM andWIVK-FM were acquired byCitadel Broadcasting, which later merged with current owner Cumulus Media. WLOD-FM changed its call letters to WNOX-FM.
Over the years, formats includedsmooth jazz ("Double 99", simulcast with WNDD) andurban adult contemporary (X-99). Later, WNOX-FM startedsimulcastingtalk radio stationWNOX990 AM.[5][6]
