WKEG (1030AM) is anon-commercial, listener-supportedradio stationlicensed toSterling Heights, Michigan, and servingMetro Detroit. It is owned byWisconsin-basedRelevant Radio and runs its nationalCatholictalk and teachingradio format. WKEG is adaytimer,Class D station operating on theclear-channel frequency of1030 AM;WBZ inBoston is the dominantClass A station on this frequency.
By day, WKEG is powered at 5,000watts, using adirectional three-tower array. To avoid interference to WBZ, WKEG's AM signal may only broadcast between sunrise and sunset. However, Relevant Radio programming is heard on fourFM translator stations around the clock: 94.3W232CA and 104.7W284BQ in Detroit, 94.1W231CV inHolly and 103.1W276DB inRochester Hills.[3]
The stationsigned on the air on October 26, 1988; 37 years ago (October 26, 1988). It was the seventh station owned and operated by Family Life Communications (commonly referred to as FLR orFamily Life Radio). It took thecall sign WUFL.[1] WUFL carried Family Life'sChristian radio programming.
In November 2022, Family Life Radio announced would sell WUFL and its fourFM translators toRelevant Radio, which is a Catholic broadcaster based inWisconsin. The deal included the land that houses WUFL's transmitter but not the call sign, which would be transferred to another Family Life Radio property.[4][a]
The sale to Relevant Radio was consummated on February 28, 2023, at a price of $3.1 million. On March 2, 2023, AM 1030 changed its call sign to WKEG. In June 2023, Family Life Radio announced it would be buying an FM station in Detroit, 93.1 WDRQ.[6] The sale was completed and the WUFL call letters were reassigned to the Detroit FM station.
