WJYI (1230kHz) was asoft oldies andadult standardsformattedradio station.[4] It waslicensed toNorfolk, Virginia and served theHampton Roads region ofVirginia.[1][2][3] WJYI was owned by Saga Communications, Inc. and operated under their Tidewater Communications, LLC licensee.[1][5] It featured programming from "America's Best Music"syndicated byWestwood One.
WJYI was aClass C station, transmitting with 627watts, using anon-directional antenna. The station'stransmitter was off East Indian River Road in Norfolk, near theCampostella Bridge.[9] Programming continues to be heard on adigital subchannel ofsister stationWNOR 98.7-HD2.[8]
On May 1, 1949, the station firstsigned on the air.[1][6] The originalcall sign was WNOR.[7] The WJOI call letters and those ofco-owned WJYI inMilwaukee swapped on April 29, 2021.[10]
On September 30, 2021, WJYI's license was surrendered to the FCC.[11]
