Vytautas Petrulis (3 February 1890 – 3 December 1941) was aLithuanian politician, one of the main figures in theLithuanian Christian Democratic Party, and an accountant. He is often nicknamed "the father of the Litas" as it was during his term as Minister of Finance that theLithuanian litas was introduced.[1]
In summer 1918, Petrulis became a member of theCouncil of Lithuania. Later, he was actingMinister of Finance in the thirdCabinet of Lithuania, Minister of Finance, Trade, and Industry in the 7th, 8th, and 9th cabinets, and in the 10th cabinet, Minister of Finance. He wasPrime Minister of Lithuania in the 11th Cabinet, as well as Minister of Finance. He was thespeaker of the Seimas from 1925 to 1926.[2]
On July 11, 1940, he was arrested by the Soviets and sent toKaunas Prison. In 1941, he was convicted by the Supreme Court of theKomi ASSR of anti-soviet activities and sentenced to death.[3] Petrulis was executed nearUkhta.
