Vyacheslav Sergeyevich Karavayev (Russian:Вячеслав Сергеевич Караваев; born 20 May 1995) is a Russian professionalfootballer who plays as aright back forRussian Premier League clubZenit St. Petersburg and theRussia national team.
Karavayev made his debut in theRussian Premier League forCSKA Moscow on 2 December 2013 in a game againstFC Rostov.[2]
Karavayev joinedDukla Prague of theCzech First League on a season-long loan deal during the summer of 2014.[3]
On 16 August 2016, he returned to the Czech Republic, signing on the permanent basis withAC Sparta Prague.[4]
On 31 January 2018, he signed a 3.5-year contract withEredivisie clubVitesse who paid €2.5 million for him.[5]
On 2 September 2019, he signed a 4-year contract with theRussian Premier League championZenit St. Petersburg.[6] On 4 April 2023, Karavayev extended his contract with Zenit until the end of the 2025–26 season, with an option for another season.[7] In January 2025, Karavayev suffered anAchilles tendon rupture and was expected to be out of play for 7 months.[8]
On 11 March 2019, he was called up to theRussia national football team for theEuro 2020 qualifiers againstBelgium on 21 March 2019 andKazakhstan on 24 March 2019.[9] He made his debut on 13 October 2019 in aEuro 2020 qualifier against Cyprus. He substitutedSergei Petrov in the 38th minute due to an injury to Petrov.[10]
On 3 September 2020 he scored his first goal for Russia national team againstSerbia in2020–21 UEFA Nations League B.[citation needed]
On 11 May 2021, he was included in the preliminary extended 30-man squad forUEFA Euro 2020.[11] On 2 June 2021, he was included in the final squad.[12] In Russia's opening game againstBelgium on 12 June 2021, he substituted injuredYuri Zhirkov late in the first half, as Russia lost 0–3.[13] In the second game againstFinland on 16 June, he once again had to come on as a first-half substitute for an injured teammate, this timeMário Fernandes, Russia won the game 1–0.[14] He appeared as a second-half substitute on 21 June in the last group game againstDenmark as Russia lost 1–4 and was eliminated.[15]
