Vitthal Laxman Phadke, better known asMamasaheb Phadke, was an Indian social worker, writer andGandhian, known for hissanitation services to the rural areas inBritish India.[1] He was one among the leaders of the Sanitation Brigade, comprising 1200 volunteers, set up by the 1938Haripura session of theIndian National Congress.[2] TheGovernment of India awarded him its third-highest civilian honour, thePadma Bhushan, in 1969, for his contributions to society.[3]
Phadke wrote an autobiography,Mari Jeevan Katha (The Story of My Life), published byNavajivan Trust, a publishing house founded byMahatma Gandhi.[4]
