Virginia's 6th Senate district is one of 40 districts in theSenate of Virginia. The new 2021 redistricting has moved the designation of 6th Senate District to far southwestern Virginia.[3][4]

Before the recent redistricting, the old district had been represented byDemocratLynwood Lewis since his victory in a highly contested 2014 special election to succeed fellow DemocratRalph Northam, who was electedLieutenant Governor of Virginia.[5]

Geography

Former District 6 was a disparate district which includedAccomack County andNorthampton County on theEastern Shore,Mathews County on theMiddle Peninsula, and parts of theHampton Roads cities ofNorfolk andVirginia Beach.[5]

The former District 6 had overlapped with Virginia's former1st,2nd, and3rd congressional districts, and with the former79th,83rd,89th,90th,98th, and100th districts of theVirginia House of Delegates.[6] It had bordered the state ofMaryland.[1]
