Vijay Arora (27 December 1944 – 2 February 2007) was an Indian actor inHindi films and television serials who was known forYaadon Ki Baaraat and asIndrajit in the television serialRamayan.[1]

Career

Arora won a gold medal when he graduated from theFilm and Television Institute of India in 1971. He made his debut with another newcomerReena Roy inZaroorat (1972). He starred withAsha Parekh inRakhi Aur Hathkadi (1972) and shot to stardom with the guitar-strummingZeenat Aman inYaadon Ki Baaraat (1973) (featuring the romantic song, "Chura Liya Hai"). Two powerful actresses,Jaya Bhaduri andWaheeda Rehman, played his wife and mother-in-law inPhagun (1973). He starred withShabana Azmi inKadambari (1976); withTanuja inInsaaf (1973); withParveen Babi in36 Ghante (1974); and withMoushumi Chatterjee inNatak (1975). FilmmakerHrishikesh Mukherjee gave him a starring role in the filmSabse Bada Sukh (1972). Other films includeRoti (1974), the lead role inJeevan Jyoti (1976), oppositeBindiya Goswami, which was a surprise hit of the year,Sargam (1979),Bade Dil Wala (1983),Jaan Tere Naam (1992) andIndian Babu (2003), where his characters were peripheral to the story line.

In the late 80s, he again found success on the small screen with his role asMeghnad Indrajit in the serialRamayan, directed byRamanand Sagar. He also appeared in the seriesBharat Ek Khoj, directed byShyam Benegal as Prince Salim/EmperorJahangir.

In 2001, he was seen in two serials,Lakeerein andTalaash, and Ketan Mehta'sPradhan Mantri. He acted inJaana Na Dil Se Door, directed byVijay Anand. Arora appeared in Gujarati cinema in films likeRaja Harish Chandra, withMadhuri Dixit. He had acted in several Hindi and Gujarati plays.[2] He did over 110 films and over 500 broadcast television serial episodes.

Personal life

Arora was married to ex-model andMiss India, Dilber Debara, and they have a son Farhad.[3] Arora died on 2 February 2007 at his residence, due to a stomach ailment.[4]
