Viau station (French pronunciation:[vjo]) is aMontreal Metro station in the borough ofMercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve inMontreal, Quebec, Canada. It is operated by theSociété de transport de Montréal (STM) and serves theGreen Line. It is in the district ofHochelaga-Maisonneuve.[4]

The station opened on June 6, 1976, as part of the extension of the Green Line toHonoré-Beaugrand station, in time for the1976 Summer Olympics.

Overview

Designed by architectIrving Sager, it is a normalside platform station built in a shallowopen cut. The eastern end of the station is surmounted by the large stationpavilion, which includes theticket hall. There is notransept;stairs lead directly from the platforms to street level.

The eastern wall of themezzanine is decorated by a non-figurativeceramicmural byJean-Paul Mousseau, entitledOpus 74 and representing theOlympic flame and the tower of theOlympic Stadium.[5]

Accessibility

In 2019, work to modernise the station, as well as expand the nearby underground workshop began. In November 2021, the station became the 19th accessible station in Montréal with the installation of elevators.[6] Remaining work was completed in January 2022.[6]

Origin of the name

This station is named for rue Viau, named for local industrialistCharles-Théodore Viau, who purchased nearby tracts of land and developed them as a neighbourhood later namedViauville.
