Abraadworst (Dutch pronunciation:[ˈbraːtʋɔrst]ⓘ) orverse worst is a large Dutch sausage, most often composed ofpork for its meat to fat ratio, althoughbeef orveal can be used too. The meat is spiced withpepper andnutmeg, but other spices and herbs such ascloves, sage, fennel seed, coriander seed, orjuniper berries can be used in addition.[1][2] Along withrookworst it is the most common sausage served along most varieties ofstamppot but is eaten with other dishes as well and can be found throughout theNetherlands andFlanders.
The namebraadworst isDutch forroast sausage, whereasverse worst simply meansfresh sausage (as opposed to dried or cured sausages).
Typically the sausage ispan fried with a large complement of butter, though during the summertime it is not uncommon to see the sausage on abarbecue.
In the Dutch language the namebraadworst is occasionally used for the GermanBratwurst as well, though the sausages involved are very different.[citation needed]Bratwursts are also referred to by their native name or are calledDuitse braadworst which meansGerman braadworst.
The Dutchverse worst orbraadworst is the direct ancestor of the internationally more knownAfrikanerboerewors, to which it still bears great resemblance.
