Verena Ute Hubertz (German:[veˈʁeːnaˈhuːbɛʁts];[1] born 26 November 1987) is a German entrepreneur and politician of theSocial Democratic Party (SPD) who has been serving asFederal Minister for Housing, Urban Development and Building in thegovernment ofChancellorFriedrich Merz since 2025.[2][3]
Hubertz was first elected as amember of the Bundestag from the state ofRhineland-Palatinate in 2021.[4]
Hubertz was born in Trier in 1987 as the daughter of alocksmith and a parish expert worker. She grew up inKonz andLampaden.[5] Aftergraduating from high school, she studiedbusiness administration atTrier University of Applied Sciences (Bachelor) and atWHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management inVallendar (MSc). She gained her first professional experience at the Lebenshilfe-Werke Trier,Vodafone,PricewaterhouseCoopers andCommerzbank.[4]
After successfully completing her studies, she went to Berlin to work with a fellow student to found thestartup Kitchen Stories, a video-based cooking platform with over 20 million users and 60 employees.[6] In 2017,BSH became the majority owner of Kitchen Stories.[7] At the end of 2020, she gave up her position asmanaging director to run for theBundestag in her home constituency.[6]
Hubertz became a member of the Bundestag in the2021 German federal election. She won thedirect mandate in theconstituency of Trier with a 5.3% lead over incumbentAndreas Steier.[8] She has since been serving as one of her parliamentary group's deputy chairs, under the leadership of chairmanRolf Mützenich.[9][10]
In thefederal election on 23 February 2025, Verena Hubertz narrowly lost to Dominik Sienkiewicz, theCDU'sdirect candidate in the Trier constituency, with 0.5% fewerfirst votes. However, thanks to her security on thestate list, Hubertz retained her Bundestag mandate.[11] However, as a result of the2023 electoral reform, Sienkiewicz was not elected to the Bundestag due to a lack ofsecond vote coverage.[12]
In the negotiations to form aGrand Coalition under the leadership ofFriedrich Merz's Christian Democrats (CDU together with the BavarianCSU) and the SPD following the2025 German elections, Hubertz was part of the SPD delegation in the working group on economic affairs, industry and tourism, led byJens Spahn,Hansjörg Durz andAlexander Schweitzer.[13] After the election she joined theMerz cabinet asFederal Minister for Housing, Urban Development and Building.[14]
