Panama requires its residents to register theirmotor vehicles and displayvehicle registration plates.[1] Current plates areNorth American standard 12 × 6 inches (300 × 152 mm).[2]
All vehicles are required to display plates on the back of the vehicle. Front license plates are not required. Additionally, taxis in Panama are also required to display plates on the sides. This is done not with actual metal plates, but by a largedecal of the license plate.

In 2013 a new numbering scheme was started. It has usually two letters followed by four digits. The single letter "M" is used for motorcycles and "T" for taxis, "B" for bus. "MB" forMetro Bus. Government vehicles use "G",and "D" is used for demo cars.
In 2018 a variant ofFE-Schrift became mandatory.
