Varat Eyalet (also known asPashaluk of Varat orProvince of Varat;[1]Ottoman Turkish:ایالت وارد; Eyālet-i Vārad)[2] was an administrative territorial entity of theOttoman Empire formed in 1660. Varat Eyalet bordered OttomanBudin Eyalet in the west,Temeşvar Eyalet in the southwest,Egir Eyalet in the northwest, vassal OttomanPrincipality of Transylvania in the southeast, and HabsburgRoyal Hungary in the north.
Varat[3] (nowOradea) was made the seat of an Ottoman governor (Beylerbey) in 1660.[4] Before the formation of the Eyalet, the land was mostly part of the Ottoman vassalPrincipality of Transylvania which established by theTreaty of Speyer in 1570 as the predecessor state of theEastern Hungarian Kingdom. Some territories that formerly belonged toTemeşvar Eyalet andEgir Eyalet were also included into Varat Eyalet.
In June 1692, the territory was conquered by theHabsburg armies, and was formally annexed to the Habsburg Empire under theTreaty of Karlowitz in 1699.[5][4] The territory of the former Ottoman eyalet was therefore included into theHabsburg-ruled Kingdom of Hungary andPrincipality of Transylvania.
