Vali Aydin oglu Gasimov (Azerbaijani:Vəli Aydın oğlu Qasımov, also spelledVeli Aydin oglu Kasumov;Russian:Вели Айдынович Касумов; born 4 October 1968) is anAzerbaijanifootball coach and a former player who played as astriker.
Born inKirovabad,Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic,Soviet Union, Gasimov started playing forFC Mayak Kharkov andFC Metallist Kharkov. In 1992, he switched toFC Spartak Moscow but, unsettled, finished the season at neighboursFC Dynamo, being eventually crowned thefirst division's top scorer at 16 goals.[1]
Gasimov was bought bySpain'sReal Betis in January 1993, but would appear very irregularly in his two 1/2 seasons at theAndalusia side. After just threeLa Liga appearances inhis final season, he finished his stint in the country with two clubs (and two relegations),Albacete Balompié andÉcija Balompié (the latter in thesecond division, where he failed to score).[2]
In summer 1997, Gasimov moved toPortugal withVitória de Setúbal. He suffered a back injury which forced him to rest for a significant period ofhis debut season, but still netted 11 times in 24 matches. After a second campaign he retired still in the country, withImortal DC inAlgarve.[3]
Gasimov played for theSoviet Union under-16 national team in 1985, helping the team to win the1985 UEFA European Under-16 Championship.[4]
Gasimov won 14 caps forAzerbaijan during four years,[5] making his debut on 19 April 1994 in a 0–5friendly loss toMalta.[6]
After retiring, Gasimov coached his national team's under-19 side.[3]
On 14 September 2016, Gasimov was sacked as manager ofNeftchi Baku.[7]
