Valeria Sarmiento (born 29 October 1948) is afilm editor,director andscreenwriter best known for her work in France, Portugal and her native Chile. She has worked both infilm andtelevision, directing 20 feature films,documentaries andtelevision series'. She is the widow of Chilean film directorRaúl Ruiz (1941-2011) with whom she collaborated for decades as regular editor and co-writer. She has also edited films forLuc Moullet,Robert Kramer andVentura Pons and is aGuggenheim Fellow (1988).
Sarmiento was born in the Chilean municipality ofValparaíso and was first exposed to film at the age of five, becoming familiar with the work ofOrson Welles,Alfred Hitchcock and others.[1] She rarely saw French films due tocensorship but, thanks to what she refers to as a "moment of magic", was able to watchJean-Luc Godard'sBreathless (1960) at the age of twelve.[1] She went on to study film andphilosophy at theUniversity of Valparaíso and married filmmakerRaúl Ruiz in 1969. In 1974, the couple were forced to move toParis[2] due to the1973 Chilean coup d'état ofAugusto Pinochet.[1]
Sarmiento made herdirectorial debut with the documentaryUn sueño como de colores (1972) about a group ofChilean women dedicated tostriptease. Her later work as a director, usually inmelodrama,romantic drama andcostume drama, has also often featured strong female characters who facemachismo andsexism.[3] Her debut featureNotre mariage (1984) was a Grand Prix winner for Best New Director at theSan Sebastián International Film Festival,[4] her 1991 filmAmelia Lópes O'Neill was entered into the41st Berlin International Film Festival[5] and her Napoleonicwar epicLines of Wellington competed for theGolden Lion at the69th Venice International Film Festival.[6]
Asymposium on Sarmiento'sfeminism was held atStanford University in May 2008[1] and theCinémathèque Française ran a Sarmientoretrospective in October 2018.[2]
