TheValencian linguistic conflict,[1][2][3][4][5] also known asValencian sociolinguist conflict,[1] refers to theconflict between the use of theSpanish andValencian languages inValencia,Spain.[6]
During theBattle of Valencia (1978–1982), the term was used to refer to a controversy about theValencian language and its relationship with the other dialects of theCatalan language.[3][7][6] This discussion is considered to be secondary when compared to the Valencian language controversy, the institutional diminution of theValencian language, and the dominance of theSpanish language.[6][4]
Valencian sociolinguistRafael Ninyoles I Monllor coined the termlinguistic conflict by the end of the 1960s[6] to refer to certaindiglossic situations, such as the Valencian one.[4] In his late works, he described the process of theongoing substitution of Valencian for Castilian by socialelites and the resulting loss of prestige of thevernacular language.[6]
