Vasant Shankar Huzurbazar (15 September 1919 – 15 November 1991) was an Indianstatistician fromKolhapur. Huzurbazar was the founder head of the department of statistics,University of Pune from 1953 to 1976.[citation needed] He was a visiting professor for two years to theIowa State University in 1962.[citation needed] From 1976 to 1979, he was visiting professor of statistics at theUniversity of Manitoba.[1] From 1979 to 1991, he was professor atUniversity of Denver,Colorado until his death.[citation needed]
In 1974, Huzurbazar was awarded thePadma Bhushan by theGovernment of India for his contributions to the field of statistics.[2] In 1983 he was elected as aFellow of the American Statistical Association.[3]
Huzurbazar completed his high school from Rajaram High school, Kolhapur.[citation needed] He did his B.Sc. fromUniversity of Mumbai and M.Sc. in statistics fromBanaras Hindu University during 1940–1941.[citation needed] Huzurbazar earned his Ph.D. in statistics fromUniversity of Cambridge in 1950; his advisor wasHarold Jeffreys. Huzurbazar worked atGauhati University,Lucknow University and at the Bureau of Economics and Statistics of Government of Bombay.[citation needed]
Huzurbazar's two daughters,Snehalata V. Huzurbazar andAparna V. Huzurbazar, both became notable statisticians.[4] He was the maternal uncle of noted Indianastrophysicist,Jayant Narlikar.
