TheVölsung Cycle is a series of legends inNorse mythology first extensively recorded inmedievalIceland, but which were also known inSweden (as seen by carvings on numerousSigurd stones),Norway,England and (perhaps) theIsle of Man.[1] The original Icelandic tales were greatly expanded with nativeScandinavian folklore, including that ofHelgi Hundingsbane,[2] which, in turn, originally appears to have been a separate tradition connected to theYlfings.
Mythological material in this cycle includes some twentyEdda poems and theVölsunga saga. It covers much of the same subject matter as theMiddle High Germanepic poemNibelungenlied.[3]
Material from the cycle was translated into English by such figures asAndrew Lang andEdward Thomas,[4] and had a significant impact on the thought and writings of theInklings.[5]
