Uzal

Uzal (Hebrew:אוּזָּ֔ל), in theHebrew Bible, was a descendant ofShem and the sixth son ofJoktan as per theBook of Genesis 10:27 and1 Chronicles 1:21. His settlements are traced in the ancient name ofSanaʽa, the capital city of theYemen.[1][2]Easton's Bible Dictionary describes Uzal as a wanderer and the founder of an Arabian tribe.[3]

Uzal was the sixth of thirteen sons of Joktan. As noted inGenesis 10:26 -10:29, Joktan became the father ofAlmodad andSheleph andHazarmaveth andJerah andHadoram and Uzal andDiklah andObal andAbimael andSheba andOphir andHavilah andJobab.

Occurring in a series of genealogies intended to trace every race known to the ancientHebrews to one ofNoah's children, theHebrew name Uzal probably referred to the region ofAzāl around modernSana'a inYemen.[4]
