Uttarparanij is acensus town within the jurisdiction of theJaynagar Majilpur police station in theJaynagar ICD block in theBaruipur subdivision of theSouth 24 Parganas district in theIndianstate ofWest Bengal.
Baruipur subdivision is a rural subdivision with moderate levels of urbanization. 31.05% of the population lives in the urban areas and 68.95% lives in the rural areas. In the southern portion of the subdivision (shown in the map alongside) there are 20census towns. The entire district is situated in theGanges Delta and the southern part is covered by the Baruipur-Jaynagar Plain.Archaeological excavations atDhosa andTilpi, on the bank of thePiyali River indicate the existence of human habitation around 2,000 years ago.[3][4][5]

Raynagar,Kalikapur Barasat,Baharu, Uttarparanij,Alipur andUttar Durgapur, all in the Jaynagar I CD block, are adjacent toJaynagar Majilpur.Nimpith andTulshighata, both in the Jaynagar II CD block, are very close to Jaynagar Majilpur. These nine locations (eight census towns and a municipal city) virtually form a cluster.[6]
According to the2011 Census of India, Uttarparanij had a total population of 6,810, of which 3,491 (51%) were males and 3,319 (49%) were females. There were 929 persons in the age range of 0 to 6 years. The total number of literate persons in Uttarparanij was 4,303 (73.17% of the population over 6 years).[7]
According to the District Census Handbook 2011, Uttarparanij covered an area of 2.7799 km2. Among the physical aspects, there is a railway station atBaharu 3 km away. Among the civic amenities, it had 10 km roads with open drains, the protected water supply involved tank, pond, lake, overhead tank. It had 400 domestic electric connections, 20 road light points. Among the medical facilities it had were 2 dispensaries/ health centres and 2 family welfare centres. Among the educational facilities it had were 3 primary schools, the nearest secondary school, senior secondary school atBaharu 3 km away, the nearest general degree college atDakshin Barasat 6 km away. Three important commodities it produced were poultry,zari work and bamboo craft.[8]
A short stretch of local roads link Uttarparanij to theState Highway 1.[9]
Baharu railway station is located nearby.[9]
Padmerhat Rural Hospital, with 30 beds, atPadmerhat, is the major government medical facility in the Jaynagar I CD block.[10]
