Island

[edit]

The 5.9-square-kilometre (2.3 sq mi; 1,500-acre) island makes up almost all ofUtsira municipality. The island lies about 18 kilometres (11 mi) west of the island ofKarmøy, with theSirafjorden lying between the two islands. The island's only connection to the mainland is by ferry, with four regular ferry routes connecting the island to thetown of Haugesund each day. The ferries are operated byRutebåten Utsira.[1]

Most of the island's population lives in the central valley that runs north-south on the island. There are about 200 residents of the island.[1]

Utsira is known as the best birding site in Norway. There have been 317 different species recorded on Utsira.[2]

The island gives its name to the BBCShipping Forecast areas of "North" and "South Utsire" (the name of the island was spelledUtsire between 1875–1924).

Climate

[edit]

Utsira has anoceanic climate (Köppen:Cfb) with cool/mild summers and chilly winters with lots of rainfall. The climate is mild for the latitude; average lows in winter remain above freezing. The island has significant seasonal lag with February–March typically being the coldest months of the year while August is the warmest. The maritime position also renders low diurnal variation in temperature between day and night. The driest season is April - July while the wettest season is August - January. October on average get nearly three times as much precipitation as May. The extreme temperatures in Utsira ranged from −15.5 °C (4.1 °F) on February 6, 1895 to 29.3 °C (84.7 °F) on July 17, 2003.
