Nice to see you still here @Gerda! Take care and ... thanks!Vejvančický (talk /contribs)09:50, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I feel the same, - when going over my list, there are so many who are no longer there, many without drama, just some last unspecific edit years ago ... - but to see a familiar name like yours is a special pleasure. I tellmy own stories now, DYK? --Gerda Arendt (talk)10:16, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm off most of time. Family, work etc.. you know. But recently I joined again and I say or write something from time to time. I can't believe that I started 15 years ago :) Your work and attitude is still impressive Gerda. @filelakeshoe - Thank you for your help, everything in the article is verifiable. From my today's point of view, it would deserve a more professional (musicological) rewrite, as I tried to write not only encyclopedic entry, but also an interesting story of life and work .. and I'm just a fan or admirer of Janáček's work, not musical scientist. Thank you again, it's really nice to hear from you again :)Vejvančický (talk /contribs)07:47, 4 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello.Why you have trimmed article?It gives me a lot of work to compile.Wikipcontributor800 (talk)09:09, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

HiUser:Wikipcontributor800, your submission was declined because it was poorly sourced. I started again by adding two reliable sources and I added some basic information proving he is notable (I know very well he is but other editors around here may not know). Your revisions are still in the history and can be restored, but don't forget to verify your claims byreliable sources. Let me know if you need any help.Vejvančický (talk /contribs)06:38, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In fact, in my last editions I have added more sources.
Anyway, I admit they could have been seen as unreliable.
I would like to express my gratitude to you for your interest in participating on draft, I really appreciate it. Let it be trimmed, but reliable and submitted.Wikipcontributor800 (talk)09:44, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Now, to discussion on article.
E.g.
I had added section ,,Legacy" with claim/statement:
there is a street in Brestovany municipality named in honour of JN, citing google maps-position as source.
Thank you for your advice and participating on draft.Wikipcontributor800 (talk)09:52, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

July music

[edit]
story ·music ·places

3 July is the birthday ofLeoš Janáček, and I'm happy I hada meaningful DYK in 2021: thank you for did for his article! - It's also the birthday ofFranz Kafka, and I uploaded pics from his family's albumseen in Berlin. --Gerda Arendt (talk)19:09, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

HiGerda . I scrolled through your page of stories and I must say ... your choice, variety and variability of topics, overall beauty and aesthetic of your contributions is so close to my heart like nothing else on Wikipedia. I'm sending youmy favourite and most beautiful piece fromOn an Overgrown Path, it's performed by lesser known but excellentJan Jiraský, who connects very well the lyrical expression and urgent or maybe even anxious rhythmical contradiction present in many of Janáček's works in one moment. Enjoy and ... be well.Vejvančický (talk /contribs)08:42, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
blushing - thank you for understanding! I listened with joy! The closest I came to Janáček was singing theGlagolitic Mass in choir, understanding how his music is language-driven and so expressive. Seeing theVixen (not cunning, not little) in Munich was also great. - I added a few images, - keep looking at story music places, - for example today's music matching the Italian tenor of the story. --Gerda Arendt (talk)09:29, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Libuše Domanínská - yesterday's story - would have turned 100 today, but I missed that ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk)10:15, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Of course I know that name, although I'm not the biggest opera fan. Good article, thank you :)Vejvančický (talk /contribs)11:21, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! - Pictured on the Main page: Brian'sMozart family grand tour, mystory today, andMozart related to all three items ofmusic on my talk: our 2023 concert, an opera in a theatre where a Mozart premiere took place, and those remembered,Martti Wallén, a bass, andLiana Isakadze, a violinist from Georgia (whose article would be better with more details about her music-making). --Gerda Arendt (talk)10:43, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Mystory today is - because of the anniversary of the premiere OTD in 1782 - aboutDie Entführung aus dem Serail, opera byMozart, whileyesterday's was - because of the TFA - aboutLes contes d'Hoffmann, opera byOffenbach, - so 3 times Mozart again if you click on "music" ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk)13:30, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Today's story is about a photographer who took iconic pictures, especiallyView from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, on Manhattan, 9/11, yesterday's wasa great mezzo, and on Thursdaywe watched a sublime ballerina. If that's not enough my talk offers chamber music from two amazing concerts. --Gerda Arendt (talk)12:08, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Gerda - that's wonderful work. You should work forGrove! Wikipedia is lucky to have you :)Vejvančický (talk /contribs)12:55, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Main Page history/2024 July 30b hada baritone,a violinist, a composer anda Bach cantata, - almost too much, and the composer's article,Wolfgang Rihm, improved much over the last days, could still grow. --Gerda Arendt (talk)21:38, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
HiGerda. SoWolfgang Rihm died? A very well known name among contemporary composers. Sad news... but also an inspiration - to listen to his work tonight.Vejvančický (talk /contribs)12:55, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. I just began an article on one more of his operas, translating,Oedipus. There are several red links in his article, and the works' articles. Even if you don't understand German you may want to watch him talking - in an interview at the end of his article. --Gerda Arendt (talk)13:10, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A Question

[edit]

Hi Vejvančický, how are you? The Transylvania events in 1848-49 was obviously complex and tragic. In an attempt to not falling into the trick of favoring or blaming either ethnic/nationalistic narratives (be it Hungarian or Romanian), being balanced and neutral is the key. So I wonder where would be the best places (book) to get a full picture of what happened in Transylvania between 1848-49 or probably other preludes to it? I am only asking this because the article posted on EN wiki is far from it.2604:3D09:D07F:E580:0:0:0:A28A (talk)21:16, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm ok, thanks. I touched the article1848–1849 massacres in Transylvania during adeletion discussion back in 2010(!). I have no knowledge of Romanian or Hungarian, so I'd stick to English literature on G-books or JSTOR. The ethnic perspective/point od view is often a problem in this part of Europe. I agree that the article is far from being perfect, I just added some reliable information proving there's a room for expansion. I'm no expert in this area.Vejvančický (talk /contribs)06:39, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your response. It seems the ethnic perspective/point od view is often a problem in areas where complexities of multi-ethnicity are involved and history has been way too complex to use ethnic/national narratives as explanation. For instance, I read that there were "complex grey areas" in Hungarian Revolution 1848-49 when armies of both sides were racially and linguistically mixed (common sign for multi-national states), soldiers (and officers) were recruited or join for various reasons (volunteer, forced conscription, batter pay, employment etc.), not simply a case of who support XX side. the problematic discipline of different armies (be it regular or militia) and disregard for human lives and values (in comparison to today's world, but even today's world these problems still exist unfortunately) also presented a major challenge back then. The longer one's fighting the longer one could have become more insensitive. For instance, I've read it after being routed at Novara 1849, there were stragglers of Sardinian army who felt bitter because of being "involuntarily" conscripted for fighting the war, and they looted their own countrymen from villages as they passed through. And Novi Sad's population fell from 20000 to 7000 (including those who returned later) and 3/4 of town was devastated.2604:3D09:D07D:6250:F0C9:ABF4:13C8:1D11 (talk)17:51, 20 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
followed the last paragraph, ...and 3/4 was devasted after heavy bombardment and then being captured by Hungarians in 1848-49 War. There were cases of the battlefield close to village and casualties of civilian population occurred as a result... Really sad.2604:3D09:D07D:6250:F0C9:ABF4:13C8:1D11 (talk)17:56, 20 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Jiří Suchý, a true legend

[edit]

Hello Antonín, I have had a brief look at your article onJiří Šlitr, which I find really good. Would you please consider expanding the article onJiří Suchý, too? The condition whereof is rather embarrassing, given the renownness of the personality, albeit in the Czech and Czechoslovak milieu. In other words, do we need to provide English information on him and his merit only after he passes away? I daresay he deserves a much better and larger entry, but my own Wikipedia editting skills are, mildly speaking, insufficient. Thank you for considering the issue, of course if you have enough time for it. Srdečně,Zinædryl kinéaedrilleur (talk)18:34, 30 September 2024 (UTC) After all, the Master turns 93 tomorrow![reply]

Hi, I always liked Šlitr more than Suchý but I admit that Suchý is a legend of Czech theatre. I'd like to expand, but as you say - I don't have enough time to focus on it. Maybe one day ... would you mind to check the grammar if I do so? I'm loosing contact with English written word and I think it is more and more visible in my contributions :( Wikipedia needs excellent writers.Vejvančický (talk /contribs)13:46, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Marco

[edit]

Vejvančický, you're a rare visitor to en:WP these days. I hope all is well.

Recently I perpetrated the articleJindřich Marco, about a man with a remarkable biography. As somebody with no knowledge of Czech, I'm sure I made spelling mistakes, and I probably did worse things too. If you have ten minutes to spare, do please give it a look. (Even better if you happen to know something about numismatics, an area of which I know nothing whatever.) --Hoary (talk)02:17, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

HiHoary, it's an excellent article, I know that name and his work from the past but I've learned a lot more from your summary. I can't find any significant mistakes. Nice to see that your article mentions alsoDagmar Hochová, one of my favourites - I've visited agreat retrospective with my wife and kids inBrno not a long time ago. We also boughta beautiful monography to our collection.
I'm ok but I don't have much time to contribute these days. Family and work and ... you know. I hope that you are ok too but I think you are - you still follow the old and consistent line of good work here. I regret that I can't focus on contributing as much as in the sleepy and comfortable times of my youth ... today my masters and commanders are stronger than me.
Nice to hear from you again. - TonyVejvančický (talk /contribs)08:34, 28 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Good to see you back here, Tony, even if it's only for a fleeting visit. I know both the feeling of having so many obligations elsewhere that making significant improvements here is impossible and the feeling of there being more enjoyable alternative uses of one's spare time.

This video shows me that you really do have a handsome book there. I'm usually not much interested in photos of kids playing around, but DH's examples are wonderful. If I found myself in a Czech bookstore, I'd be tempted.

I too am rather busy these days; but when time permits, I hope to do some more work on one of your creations, the article onViktor Kolář. --Hoary (talk)23:25, 28 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Hoary - yes, Kolář has great eyes, I come back to some of his photos for decades. Hochová is not just about kids, actually I'd say that her work is close to Kolář and other great Czech documentary photographers of the second half of the 20th century.Vejvančický (talk /contribs)11:01, 30 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I did see the entire video of Hochová's book and I saw that she has gone far beyond just photographs of kids. I meant to say that even when she's working in a genre that rarely much interests me, her work impresses me. As for Kolář, of course I remembered how good his work in Ostrava was (or has been), but until recently I hadn't paid enough attention to his Canadian work. It too is excellent. --Hoary (talk)11:39, 30 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Basil Payne deletion

[edit]

Hi, you deleted the Basil Payne Mount Jerome cemetery entry because you said he wasnt notable. The only reason that happened is because the original Basil Payne entry is contested due to wikipedia copyright confusion. Im his son. I hold copyright. Much of the data on my 'late father is also at the dictionary of Irish biography website.

Missing article: Josef Kruis

[edit]

Hi Vejvančický, long time no hear. I was reviewing ourWikipedia:WikiProject Czech Republic/Wanted articles, and a Josef Kruis is identified, originally fromyour missing articles list. I was looking for sources and I wonder if the missing article is in fact Karel Kruis? Josef does seem to be mentioned atTerzetto in C major (Dvořák) though... the plot thickens. Thanks for any insights or context you might be able to share, when you're next online. Until then,C67918:35, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

HiC679, I too think that we are talking about more people named Kruis. Josef Kruis was a roommate ofAntonín Dvořák, he played violin and in my opinion it was rather an accident that they met. He certainly isn't an important personality of the Czech music (he was a chemist) and today I doubt he is notable enough for Wikipedia. Then it seems that we've got another Josef Kruis and his brother Karel Kruis - Karel seems to be notable chemist and photographer, seecs:Karel Kruis. But I'm not sure if his brother Josef was the same person as Dvořák's fellow musician...Vejvančický (talk /contribs)09:12, 21 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
