Categories

Should the articleJoan Bolger andJim Bolger have the categoryCategory:People from Waikanae (where they currently live) or should the category be where they grew up or something like that? ―Panamitsu(talk)10:49, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Or should there be a category for each place they've lived? ―Panamitsu(talk)10:50, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
MorenaPanamitsu, I suggest that as long as someone lived somewhere for some length of time, and it's referenced in their bio, then aPeople from Foo category for each of those places is appropriate.Schwede6617:48, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Lyttelton Museum

[edit]

Hi I am currently working onDraft:Lyttelton Museum (I don't yet know if it's notable enough) and have noticed that in 2011 you tooka picture of the building on Donald Street. After being confused about why the sources show a different building, I looked at Google Maps and realised that the 'main' building (now demolished) is that white one visible on the right. Do you happen to have a picture of that? ―Panamitsu(talk)06:46, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I found justthe right photo on Flickr,Panamitsu, but the license isn't quite right. I've asked the photographer whether they are happy to remove the NP-part from the license. Meanwhile, I've created both a Commons category and a Wikidata entry for the museum.Schwede6608:08, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

Hi! It's been awhile. Thanks for your help with DYKs. Happy new year.

Quick question you may know the answer to. I've been working the past few days on an article that is in draft.Draft:Leon Feingold. Am still working on it. When I'm done, if it gets promoted to be an article, will it be eligible for DYK? Here is the quirk. It looks as though it was once an article in the past, but lost that status. It looks as though it was Proded.https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Draft:Leon_Feingold&diff=prev&oldid=1255209358 It certainly had issues then, including an apparent COI from an editor. Now it is a draft. Thoughts?2603:7000:2101:AA00:34FB:96:88B8:2C6D (talk)23:20, 30 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

HNY to you, too. Yes, it’s eligible:Articles that have been re-created from deletion may be considered new.Schwede6616:11, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thanks! Hope all is well. Will do some more work on it.--2603:7000:2101:AA00:6412:3406:5B47:5C1F (talk)23:03, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Having since looked at it in more detail (sorry, I’m away on holiday), I see that the deleted article has been restored to draft. The eventual article will thus count as new, but the five-time-expansion rule will have to be met.Schwede6616:25, 2 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Request for help - mergin of pages

[edit]

HiSchwede66, this is election time in India and some of us, have been trying to create pages for the new winning MLAs of Delhi. Two pages were created within a few minutes, by me and one more user, User talk:Xoocit. Request you to kindly look at the two pages and suggest if they can be merged. I createdAahir Deepak Chaudharyy using the spelling given by all the sources, including the official election commission of India site. Another page is created asDeepak Choudhary, based on the spelling of his instagram profile (as quoted by the user in his talk page reply). Since Xoocit created it a few minutes before I did, my page can be merged into his as both BLPs are about the same person. Grateful if you can look into it, when you have a minute.Davidindia (talk)14:32, 8 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

If it’s about the same person, a merge needs to be done. The second page should at the end remain as a redirect to the first.Schwede6614:51, 8 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot. Another editor noticed it and did a 'redirect'. Thanks for your time! BestDavidindia (talk)08:53, 9 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

DYK Eligibility

[edit]

Hello! OnTemplate:Did you know nominations/2025 Balkan retail boycotts, you stated that2025 Southeast Europe retail boycotts couldn't be posted on DYK due tobeing on ITN. Is there a specific DYK or MP policy that prevents an item from being featured twice on a MP run? —Knightoftheswords13:46, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Have a read ofWP:DYKNEW,Knightoftheswords281.Schwede6614:26, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It is also ineligible if it has, within the year prior to nomination or between nomination and appearance on the Main Page, appeared as a boldlink at In the news (ITN) or in the prose section of Selected anniversaries (OTD), or as Today's featured article (TFA). A nomination must go on hold if the article has pending nominations to appear at any of the same.

So it would still be ineligible even when it rolls off ITN? —Knightoftheswords15:30, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, because it has had its main page exposure.Schwede6617:25, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Note - I should perhaps point out that I have opened up aconversation with an editor who has to my surprise stripped RS-supported mention of Leibowitz from half a dozen articles today between 14:40 and 14:50 (see[1]). But while I've opened up discussion with the editor, I don't believe that impacts the DYK itself, as that editor has not as of yet sought to delete the same text from this article. --2603:7000:2101:AA00:6103:B31A:D0F4:8A0E (talk)03:23, 27 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

So I called the airport and I said, “It’s Israel’s boarding gate, you can’t make language mistakes!” And they said, "Then, come and read the ads," and I told them they were coming. Nice one! I'm sure that the reviewer will find something suitable. It'snominated here. I've made some tweaks to the hooks as part of this edit for your info to align withWP:DYKCRIT, and on the nomination page, I've added(pictured) everywhere.Schwede6618:48, 16 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Fatema Al Harbi

On21 March 2025,Did you know was updated with a fact from the articleFatema Al Harbi, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was... that Bahraini authorFatema Al Harbi, the first non-government Bahraini to visit Israel, faced death threats upon her return? The nomination discussion and review may be seen atTemplate:Did you know nominations/Fatema Al Harbi. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page(here's how,Fatema Al Harbi), and the hook may be added tothe statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Errors page

[edit]

I just realized that my comment on the ERRORS page might come across as mean despite my intentions, but it felt like public shaming considering how often that page is viewed. I do have a talk page.SL93 (talk)18:29, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Oh. I’m sorry for that,SL93. Public shaming was certainly not my intention. My comment was aimed at drawing attention to a little detail that can be overlooked. It was intended as feedback without any negative undertone. I hear what you say, though, and I shall be more careful to not use that well-watched page for giving such feedback.Schwede6622:33, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your nice response.SL93 (talk)22:35, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

OTD - how come deleted two entries?

[edit]

Hi, how come you deleted two entries on today's OTD? I've asked over here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Main_Page/Errors#Today%27s_OTD), so feel free to respond to me there. Thanks!QueensanditsCrazy (talk)22:37, 1 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

As you saw, I answered your query at Errors. Given that you've made a follow-up statement,QueensanditsCrazy, and Errors has since been wiped, what I can tell you is that the main page was redesigned in 2006 to have columns, and we've been doing the balancing of the columns since then. I don't know whether that's documented in some guideline or not (those things are never covered by policy, by the way), but that's what we do. If you've got issues with it, the place to raise it is atTalk:Main Page.Schwede6601:04, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I might raise the issue and try to get a consensus (either way) cuz I thought it was strange, maybe others will agree (or not). Thank you!QueensanditsCrazy (talk)12:33, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Protection ofTreaty of Waitangi

[edit]

Was it necessary to protect the page when it was just one ip address (who does not appear to be blocked or partially-blocked) that was vandalising?Traumnovelle (talk)23:44, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Well, with IPs, even if you were to block them, most have dynamic IP addresses. If you apply a range block, it can easily have a bigger impact than semi-protecting an article. I'm not sure whether that thinking is entirely within the accepted guidance. Feel free to have a look and let me know if it isn't. Either way, the protection will expire within a couple of days.Schwede6623:56, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Can't IP ranges (along with accounts) be blocked from editing specific pages?Traumnovelle (talk)01:44, 3 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that's what page protection is for; you can't make it (the protection) specific to IP ranges, though.Schwede6602:04, 3 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm talking aboutpartial blocks. They do appear to be a way to prevent disruption to the specific page without targetting IPs outside the range and blocking other pages.Traumnovelle (talk)02:26, 3 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh. I've never looked into that. I shall investigate, but it won't happen in a hurry due to real world pressures.Schwede6602:48, 3 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, talk page is still open and the ip-editing rate was very intermittent.Traumnovelle (talk)02:51, 3 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Joe Biden presidential campaigns

[edit]

Re your edit summary atJoe Biden presidential campaigns (the ping didn't work, btw), I had no idea it was on the main page. This appeared to be a run-of-the-mill, and reasonable, technical request atWP:RM/TR. -Station1 (talk)06:10, 3 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure why the ping didn't work; using the normal wikitext syntax User:Station1 in an edit summary does create a ping as perHelp:Notifications#Mentions in edit summaries. Ah well. So here's a ping with my response,Station1.
The point of the edit summary was to make you aware ofWikipedia:MPNOREDIRECT in case you didn't know about it. From your reply above, I now know that you hadn't spotted that the item had been on the main page. Thus, there's nothing that you could (or should) have done differently. All is good. Have a good day.Schwede6606:22, 3 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ping

[edit]

If that ping from the April 4 edit summary was a test, it worked.Station1 (talk)08:29, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nope; no test. I know what creates a ping and I also know what makes them fail,Station1.Schwede6609:50, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
OK, so now I'm curious. Two (serious) questions: Why did that first ping not work when the other three did? And what were you alerting me to re April 4?Station1 (talk)17:15, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
1: I suspect it did work and you simply overlooked it,Station1. It’ll be there in your ping history. Click on the bell and look through the items.
2: Yes, that edit summary ping would have been confusing because I pinged the wrong user. D'oh! It refers to the above talk item named "OTD - how come deleted two entries?".Schwede6618:39, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The first thing I did, before I ever wrote to you, was check my alert history. That first ping is definitely not there, even though every subsequent ping from you is there. I guess it will have to remain an unsolved mystery.Station1 (talk)23:05, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Let's add it to the mystery file.Schwede6605:07, 6 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Just noticed our favourite IP editor at it again onTemplate:Selwyn - any chance we could get that added to the protection list too?Turnagra (talk)00:51, 6 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Right then. I didn't "miss" that template as such because it doesn't contain any macrons. But it does have dual names, and those are another obvious target, of course. Now fixed; have applied permanent semi-protection.Schwede6605:11, 6 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! And sorry, I didn't mean to imply anything with my message.Turnagra (talk)07:09, 6 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I wasn’t complaining or anything. All good.Schwede6608:43, 6 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Preemptive protection

[edit]

I saw your protection ofTemplate:Upper Harbour Local Board Area but was confused because the page in question has never been vandalised, according to theprotection policy. Protection is not supposed to be preemptive and templates should only be protected when they are at high risk.Traumnovelle (talk)05:24, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The edit summary points to the discussion,Traumnovelle:Wikipedia:New Zealand Wikipedians' notice board/Archive 36#Low-level macron vandalism. Also relevant isthe discussion above. There are good reasons to act pre-emptively, as this is vandalism that can go undetected (for example, I found one today thatgot vandalised 14 months ago without anyone picking up on it), and it's way more efficient to do them in bulk rather than someone spotting it and then requesting protection. There's a furtherdiscussion here about what's going on. Lastly, what we would really have preferred doing was totackle this problem via an edit filter, but the request wasn't actioned.Schwede6605:40, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I don't believe the low-level disruption justifies the protection of so many pages. If you are able to protect the pages could you not simply just watchlist them?Traumnovelle (talk)05:47, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'll pass on that suggestion. My watchlist is just shy of 10,000 pages and I don't want to add to it with a couple of hundred templates.Schwede6605:49, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there, and pingingOhnoitsjamie too.An IP you've blocked has been recently contributing under a different IP. My evidence is as follows: it's obvious. They talk the same way and are talking on the same pages, including to their other sockpuppet. Both IPs have had a round on my talk page. Inserting an image into Wikidata

[edit]

Greetings. I was trying to add an image of Peter De Lange intohis article but learned I couldn't because the infobox is taken from Wikidata, and I wasn't capable of editing it. I tried adding an image of him on Wikidata and it was visible on the Wikidata page but it strangely wasn't visible on the Wikipedia page of him. Is there a way to fix it? I read the error page and couldn't figure it out. It is also my first time editing Wikidata.Alexeyevitch(talk)04:38, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure why it doesn't populate into the article automatically, but I've added it by using theimage parameter. See the docs atTemplate:Infobox person/Wikidata. Cheers,Dracophyllum06:00, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Seems like it just takes some time to populate actually, the |image parameter is no longer req and has been rmved.Dracophyllum06:11, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) I have fixed it. –DreamRimmer06:24, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Extended confirmed access

[edit]

Hi Schwede66,

I was looking through the user rights log and I noticed that you revoked extended confirmed access from some users for being inactive. I'm new to Wikipedia and not sure about the convention; is it typical for this permission to be revoked after a period of inactivity? For autopatrolled there isWP:APREVOKE but I did not find anything analogous for extended confirmed access.Stockhausenfan (talk)20:44, 14 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, there’s no convention for it. I just did it as the rationale is the same as for the recent autopatrolled discussion (if a dormant account is compromised, you would not want it to have advanced permissions).Schwede6622:18, 14 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator intervention needed

[edit]

Hello @Schwede66,

I have previously started a discussion on WP:ANI(Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#c-Thehistorianisaac-20250618030600-User:Nghtcmdr) regarding misconduct by another user, which multiple other editors have also spoke out on. However, there seems to be no admin intervention yet, so may I ask if you could go check it out?

Thehistorianisaac (talk)04:36, 19 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Given that it's already at ANI, I shall stay out of it.Schwede6604:38, 19 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ok; However, may I ask if there is any way to be able to find admins to intervene quicker, as the ANI has received no Admin response yet, and even during the discussion the user in question has continued to direct false accusations towards me, and has deliberately shownWP:ICANTHEARYOU to editors who try to explain policies to them, so I would prefer if there could be a faster response.Thehistorianisaac (talk)04:44, 19 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No, there isn't really a way to speed things up. And in the big scheme of things, there's no need for speed either. If you are in the right, and the other user is in the wrong, simply lean back and watch things come to a slow end for the other party. If whatever it is that's going on gets to you, I suggest you take a wiki-break and catch some fresh air.Schwede6604:53, 19 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks. I'm not really that concerned about the user's personal attacks, I just would prefer admin intervention come sooner than later.Thehistorianisaac (talk)04:56, 19 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Tomorrow's TFA

[edit]

Hi Schwede, Could you replace the TFA for tomorrow with the following please? There are a couple of tweaks in there from the current version

Holkham Hall is an 18th-century country house in Norfolk, England, constructed in the Neo-Palladian style for Thomas Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester. The hall was designed by the architect William Kent, with contributions from Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington, the Norfolk architect and surveyor Matthew Brettingham and Thomas Coke himself. Holkham is one of England's finest examples of the Palladian revival style of architecture. The exterior consists of a central block, of two storeys and four flanking wings. The interior of the hall is opulent, but by the standards of the day, simply decorated and furnished. The Holkham estate was built up by Sir Edward Coke, a lawyer in the reigns of Elizabeth I and James I and the founder of his family's fortune. It remains the ancestral home of the Coke family, who became Earls of Leicester. The house is a Grade I listed building, and its park is listed as Grade I on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England. Holkham Hall

[edit]

Answering your question, I don't think a link toSir is an overlink, as it isn't common and is so misunderstood. The word is often treated here as part of someone's name, but it isn't that. If we want to seeSir Sidney George Holland, do we also wantMr Richard John Seddon?Moonraker (talk)10:06, 20 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for posting your query here,Moonraker. Hm, let me get another opinion.Paora, you often deal with knights and dames; could you please look atthis diff and share your view with us? I wouldn't have any problems if you thought that Moonraker has got it right; in which case, I'd happily self-revert (or be reverted).Schwede6603:12, 21 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
PerMOS:SIR, "the title is placed in bold in the first use of the name", so Schwede66 is correct. Generally the specific knighthood will be linked from the body of the article, which then should give an explanation for the title of Sir. And no, we don't wantMr Richard John Seddon, just as we don't use Dr or Professor either; referMOS:MR andMOS:CREDENTIALS.Paora (talk)03:32, 21 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks; I knew you would know more about it than me having a hunch.Schwede6603:35, 21 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks,Paora, I see thatMOS:SIR does lay down a rule, but do you not see my point? The "Sir" or "Dame" or "Lord" or "Lady" is simply a title, just like "Dr" and "Professor" and "Mr". Why should they be treated differently and bolded as part of names? Whether to link them or not is another matter, which I don't have a strong view on. No doubt there's a better place to discuss this.Moonraker (talk)10:28, 21 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Community board elections

[edit]

Hey, just responding here to your note in your edit summary for2025 Tasman District Council election:

I'm not sure about going into too much detail on the community board elections for these election pages. For one, I don't think they're particularly notable - as evidenced by the general lack of candidates for them around the country (present company excepted, of course).

However, if there was a wider consensus that we should also be including the details for the community boards on these pages, that would be fine. Though, I don't think I will be the one to add those in. It would add quite a bit more work on all of the pages, and the past couple of days I have already been finding the just keeping up with the candidates for the council positions is taking up a lot more time than I would like. After all the council nominations have finished coming in and that's all sorted (and maybe a bit of a break), I might be more willing to do some work there.-Radicuil (talk)08:51, 31 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I see. I understand where you are coming from. Let me explain how this all came about,Radicuil. In June, I spotted thatTheLoyalOrder had started an article for the2022 Tasman District Council election. Given that I live in the Tasman District, I thought I might as well add to that article. It already had the community board details before I started.
Later in June, I then started the2025 Tasman District Council election article. And sometime later, I created the2019 Tasman District Council election article. I based those on the 2022 article, and for that reason, they have a section for the community boards.
By no means do I expect you to add CB details to the various local election articles. You are doing an absolutely sterling job with the city and district council candidates, plus the mayoral contenders. If CBs aren't your thing, just ignore them. I know how hard it is to have a project going; I got somewhat overwhelmed by coordinating the Olympic articles forWP:DYK last year, and that was a total mission.
TheLoyalOrder, maybe you could add the missing Golden Bay Community Board members. There were two candidates there already before my name turned up in the nominations. Now that the nomination period is over, there are six names. I'm happy to amend all the other tables, and to write prose that isn't related to the Golden Bay ward. Where there's Golden Bay-related prose, I'll make suggestions on the article's talk page.
You are both doing a fabulous job. I wish I had more time. If I had, I'd help much more!Schwede6601:27, 1 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]
story ·music ·places

Today's story - short version: ten years ago we had a DYK about a soprano who sang in concerts with me in the choir, - longer: I foundtoday a youtube ofan aria she sang with us then, recorded the same year, - if you still have time: our performances were the weekend before the Iraq war ultimatum, and we sangDona nobis pacem (and the drummer drummed!) as if they could hear us in Washington. --Gerda Arendt (talk)15:51, 18 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe they heard the drums in Washington. But were they listening? Unfortunately not.Schwede6616:10, 18 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe. Check out my talk for an Independence day, or: the pic of Oksana Lyniv was taken on 24 August. There's listening and reading intoday's story, and I like both. --Gerda Arendt (talk)18:33, 24 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
On top of my talk: birthday ofa great violinist and Requiem for a great friend. We sang Paradisi gloria from theStabat Mater in the end. --Gerda Arendt (talk)19:39, 31 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

New article

[edit]

Hi Schwede66, just posted a new article. Thought you might be interested.Section 22 of the Constitution Act, 1867Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk)04:20, 4 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, great piece of work!Schwede6607:27, 4 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Technical question: is the image of the BNA Act at the top of the page set to a good size? I’ve set it at upright 0.75, but I’m not sure if that displays well? (To avoid eye strain, I’ve got my screen display on my laptop showing large font, so I may not be the best judge of visual appearance.) The other images I’ve left at regular size, but didn’t want the BNA Act image to be overwhelming at top of page.Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk)12:47, 4 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I’m not sure. My thinking is that the content of an image doesn’t need to be readable. If someone does want to read it, they can open the file in Commons. What you’ve done is a compromise, whereby you can somewhat read it without going via Commons. Interesting approach. I’d say it’s a valid choice, but if you put the article through a peer review, others might see it differently. Hence, don’t get too invested in doing it this way.Schwede6613:48, 4 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. May just change it to the default.Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk)14:46, 4 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. One of the two performing women I brought to the main page. Sadly, death kept both from performing more, one sooner, the other much later. Arbitration

  • Aftera motion, arbitration enforcement page protections no longer need to be logged in the AELOG. A bot now automatically posts protections atWP:AELOG/P. To facilitate this bot, protection summaries must include a link to the relevant CT page (e.g.WP:CT/BLP), and you will receive talk page reminders if you forget to specify the contentious topic but otherwise indicate it is an AE action.

Dead URL?

Hi there. The URL I linked to on the Māori electorates page wasn't dead when I linked to it - I replaced the old dead link with an updated one going to the (presumably) same article. Importing short descriptions

[edit]

Hi, in the future when importing short descriptions from Wikidata liked you did here[2] please make sure that it complies with our guidelines such asWP:SDFORMAT. The one imported was over 95 characters and showed up inWikipedia:Database reports/Long short descriptions. Typically we want something under 40 characters, though under 60 is normally fine if the core information is in the first 40. For biographies, it's typically "[Nationality] [most notable occupation(s)] [birth/death years if sourced]". There is also some guidance on more techncial reasons why Wikidata importing is not always good to use atWP:SD-VS-WIKIDATA. Thanks --Patar knight -chat/contributions07:06, 26 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Schwede66, I would like to request a correction onTemplate:In the news. Guide to temporary accounts

[edit]

Hello, Schwede66. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have atemporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with thetemporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.

How do temporary accounts work?

Editing from a temporary account
  • When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern:~2025-12345-67 (a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5).
  • All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
  • A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with thetemporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
  • As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
    • There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
    • There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.

Temporary account IP viewer user right

How to enable IP Reveal

Impact for administrators

  • It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects theautoblock option.
  • It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
  • Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. OnSpecial:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should useSpecial:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).

Rules about IP information disclosure

  • Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access isgenerally not allowed (e.g.~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
  • Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g.~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward3RR, but notHey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67)
  • SeeWikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.

Useful tools for patrollers

  • It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via theUser Info card, available inPreferences →Appearance →Advanced options →TickEnable theuser info card
    • This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
  • Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
  • Similarly,Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
  • The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.

In reSpecial:Diff/1320927081, if two people make the exact same edit, then as far as the software is concerned it's the same as if you opened the edit window and clicked "publish" without doing anything. Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/November 10 edit

[edit]

Youredit removed the entry forWilmington massacre for page balance. Is it possible to restore it? Probably not. I understand that the spacing on MP can be an issue, would you think about removing one of the other entries and restoring the Wilmington massacre to the OTD/selected anniversaries? It hasn't appeared on the MP since 2018, andSiege of Zara, for instance, has appeared on the Main Page a total of at least 8 times.... Oh. I just realized what day it was. I guess it's too late. -Shearonink (talk)14:58, 10 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for stopping by,Shearonink. I left the siege alone because that was the old item, and the other three had round anniversaries (5, 30, and 50 years). In a few hours, page protection will drop off. Why don’t you thenedit the page and put the OTD together for 2026? That way, you can include the Wilmington item.Schwede6617:45, 10 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'll work on the massacre some more this next year and see what happens. As I said over onWikipedia talk:Selected anniversaries,Siege of Zara appeared in OTD for the 9th time,SS Edmund Fitzgerald had its 6th appearance (but also that event's 50th anniversary),Ken Saro-Wiwa article appeared for the 7th time.Wilmington massacre article has appeared twice in OTD - in 2011 and in 2018. I might even try to get the massacre article to a GA... -Shearonink (talk)19:45, 10 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
