Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

[edit]

Hi. TheWikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/IrelandWikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much likeWikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country likeWikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk)21:09, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Catchup - sort of

[edit]

Hi

Just dropping a line to say hi :)

Hi!

Hope all is ok with you :)

I started some work, but as i am partially disabled it takes everything to just do that and keep alive lol, so very little time for Wiki for another year or so.

It helps to take a break from Wiki every now and again, but i feel like a stranger nowadays :(

Glad to see you are still about and hope all went well with the new house after the move!

Chaosdruid (talk)03:40, 8 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the greeting, CD! I and my family are doing well - my son is now in 6th grade. I am currently working with another person on a graphic novel - I'm doing the artwork, and she the writing. She has already published many books, and one of the series she has written is the basis for this graphic novel, which is something she has never done before. For me it will mean that I am going to have a published book that will help me immensely should I try to publish another. The novel takes place in medieval northern Europe, but other than that I cannot say at this point. Needless to say, though, I will certainly be busy for the next year or so... Thanks again for your letter! --Saukkomiestalk11:34, 8 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Gimbutas research

[edit]

Hi,

I am working on an erkenntnis-theoretical reevaluation of Marija Gimbutas. I am a German scholar for gestalt theory and meta-methodology. Gimbutas seems to be quite central for my habilitation (I did my Phd in Romania in Iasi). Are you still interested in the subject? I need some background from Romania. I am not very used to Wikipedia editing up to now.— Precedingunsigned comment added byMachs successor (talkcontribs) 14:12, 23 October 2017 (UTC)Machs successor (talk)14:14, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings! Machs, is it?
What sort of background data from Romania are you seeking? I might be able to help point you in a couple of productive directions, but I need more specific details first. --Saukkomiestalk11:43, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your edit

[edit]

Hi there! I saw that youredid some translation onFurillen. Unfortunately you got it all wrong. In Swedish pines can be called both "tall" and "fura", "fura" being the old word for these trees. Please see the Swedish aticleTall where this is cleary stated in the first sentence. The English word "fir" has nothing to do with these trees even if they sound similair. I will undo your edit so that the species will be correct once more. It is always best to check the article in the native language if you are uncertain what a word means. Cheers, --cart-Talk20:49, 1 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I shall try to ignore your pompous and patronizing attitude, and point out that you are mistaken. Please refer to the talk pageTalk:Furillen to read my further elucidation on this point. --Saukkomiestalk18:48, 4 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Oh dear, I'm sorry that you were offended by my comment, that was not my intention at all. Then again, I didn't see your notice about "hostile actions" until now. I too have a policy and that is to never engage in edit wars. Please do as you like with the article, I'm walking away from this now since it has turned sour. --cart-Talk08:55, 5 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Before you walk away, just please answer one question: what is the Swedish translation for the English word "fir"? --Saukkomiestalk23:19, 5 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
In common speak that would be "gran". We call both 'fir' and 'spruce' "gran". Swedish does not have as many words as English so we tend to use some words in a larger sense. If we really want to make a distinction between 'fir' and 'spruce' we put the prefix "ädel" (meaning 'noble') before "gran" resulting in "ädelgran" to indicate that this is not the normal common variety of "gran"/spruce. When we talk about the different sorts of firs/ädelgranar we use only "gran" as part of the name. Example:Silver firSilvergran,Balsam firBalsamgran, and so on. See the list on this page,Ädelgranssläktet, and follow the links to the English pages where they are called firs. We are a simple people, if it looks like a "gran" we call it a "gran" even if other countries make a distinctions between these trees. --cart-Talk00:15, 6 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I think you just broke my brain. --Saukkomiestalk01:24, 6 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about that. I did not make Swedish, I just use it. I know how hard it is to explain this strange language to non-Swedes.cart-Talk01:49, 6 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

LOL! I have actually studied Swedish; some of my ancestors came from southern Sweden, and I would actually love to move to become a permanent resident of Sweden. My wife and I talk of this all the time, and we'd both love to immigrate backwards to our mother country (she has ancestors from Sweden, too).

Anyway, this sort of reminds me of the funny thing about the moose. In Sweden there are moose, but they are called "alg" ("moose" is actually a loan word from the Ojibwe Indians). Many Americans and Swedes get confused about this, because here in the US we also have elk, which sounds a lot like alg. But our elk are not moose - they are a large deer, which I think are called hjortdjuren in Swedish. But hjortdjuren refers to all deer, and collectively the Swedes refer to all deer as alg, but Americans think that either the Swedes mean "elk", or if they know about the moose/alg thing, they think that the Swedes are actually only talking about moose, and not deer in general. It's incredibly confusing. --Saukkomiestalk03:36, 6 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately you got some of that wrong too, but I won't open that can of worms and risk causing you more brain damage. ;) Just one note: It's "älg", the dots makes this anentirely different letter, "alg" means 'algae'. --cart-Talk11:31, 6 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Thank you for the correction. Certainly the letters 'a' and 'ä' are different. I speak Finnish fluently, and they also use the Swedish alphabet.
Do you live in Sweden? --Saukkomiestalk13:58, 6 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'm a Swede, right now living on the west coast of Sweden, but I've lived most of my life on Gotland where Furillen was my favourite place to go for Sunday hikes. So I know a thing or three about the island. Writing Gotland related articles is my pet project here. I thought I might put my knowledge of the island to some good use. --cart-Talk16:16, 6 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I too have a connection to Gotland, and to the island of Furillen; I have a friend who lives within walking distance of it. I am so envious of you, because it is my heart's desire to live in Sweden. The few times I visited your country, it felt to me as if I was returning to my home, not visiting a foreign country. Are you near Göteborg, or more closer to Malmö? My own family came from the area around Kivik in the Simrishamn region of Skåne. They were Hokansons and Jonssons (I know, very common names), and immigrated to the western frontier of the US in the early 1870s. One of them, Ingar Hokanson, was from the small village of Sudra Mellby, in the same region. At any rate, we never get everything we wish for, but if I could, I would move myself and my family to Sweden in a heartbeat, with no regrets. --Saukkomiestalk12:01, 7 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I think that is quite enough chatter about me. I'm one of the users who like my privacy on WP. I prefer to build the encyclopedia and not use the talk pages as a social platform, sorry. Hope you get some of the life you wish for.cart-Talk21:13, 7 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Peace out dude! --Saukkomiestalk22:21, 7 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
