Music

[edit]

Been thinking recently about how much Wikipediadoes act as a social network, and how valuable that can be. Articles aren't social media, of course, but Wikipedia is an encyclopediaand a community, and healthy volunteer communities need to foster forms of communication that aren't strictly "talking shop". In that spirit, how about some music talk. Might just be me sharing, but who knows.

What I'm listening to

[edit]

Occasionally sharing songs/albums that I find myself listening to repeatedly. Starting this at the end of 2022, so here's what I've been listening to this year. And yeah, it's all over the place.

December 2022

December 2022

[edit]
  • The Window of Appearances (Act 1 Scene 3) fromAkhenaten (spotify is a little closer to what I heard, but it's also onyoutube - Seeing Akhenaten at the Metropolitan Opera was one of my most memorable experiences this year. I knew almost nothing about it, haven't seen an opera since seeing one against my will as a child, but it just looked like such an unusual spectacle. Not only was the set and production outstanding, but I found myself listening to the music repeatedly ever since. This track is when Akhenaten sings for the first time. He's just been crowned pharaoh and makes his "appearance". Without expectations, his voice was immediately striking. I wasn't prepared for acountertenor (Anthony Ross Costanzo in this case) in that role (i.e. much higher than I would've thought). I don't have the classical vocabulary to talk about it properly, but the way the repetitive nature of the music shifts and intensifies from minor changes, with other voices coming in, was really powerful and shifted my undestanding of what I was getting into.
  • Cool byUffie (spotifyyoutube) - Great pop song, with pacing and infectious bass line that's just, well, really cool.
  • Sunglasses At Night byCorey Hart (spotifyyoutube) - Heard the synth line sampled in another song and it drove me nuts I couldn't remember what it was from. Finally tracked it down and relearned how much this track slaps. Started a trend in my house of trying to turn random "a" sounds scratchy and loud.
  • I've Seen Footage byDeath Grips (spotifyyoutube) - Not going to be for everyone, but weird, hard, noisy, danceable hip hop scratches an itch.
  • Is There a Ghost byBand of Horses (spotifyyoutube) - Band of Horses'Everything All the Time was one of my favorite albums about 15 years ago, and I realized I hadn't paid much attention to them since. Decided to see what they've been up to and was happy I did. Solid indie rock, maybe with some southern influence, that's catchy as hell.
  • Pecking Order byToo Many Zooz (spotifyyoutube) - They call themselves "brass house", seemingly structuring their brass jazz like house music, and it works for me. This song isn't actually a big stand-out, but I had trouble choosing one.
  • Pineapple Suite byCristobal Tapia de Veer (fromThe White Lotus) (spotifyyoutube) - I was just really impressed by the soundtrack ofWhite Lotus and wound up listening to it when the show was done.
  • Hairy Candy byTobacco (spotifyyoutube) - Tobacco's the guy fromBlack Moth Super Rainbow, and this sounds, well, exactly like BMSR. Fuzzy, psychedelic electronica with repetitive lyrics that function like another instrument.
  • Blazing Arrow byBlackalicious (spotifyyoutube) - Blackalicious's Gift of Gab was just really really good at coming up with complex rhymes that wind up as an impressive song rather than a gimmick. —Rhododendritestalk \\18:50, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

June 2023

[edit]
  • Blade Runner 2049 by Synthwave Goose (spotify) - I've added a lot of Synthwave Goose tracks to my background/working playlists recently. It is what it says on the tin, basically:synthwave done pretty well.
  • Fantasy Trash Wave byTobacco (spotify) - Didn't realize I listed a Tobacco track above, but oh well. A bit muddier and darker than BMSR, I'd say, but similar sound.
  • Rita Lee byOs Mutantes (spotify) -Rita Lee died recently, and I found myself on an Os Mutantes kick. I listened to them a lot 2005-2007, but not much since then, so it was good to go back through the catalog on Spotify.
  • Top Top byOs Mutantes (spotify) - Rita Lee isn't actually on the song named after her, so how about one of my favorite Mutantes tracks, too.
  • Mustn't Hurry byFever Ray (spotify) - Had the chance to see Fever Ray atTerminal 5 recently, and this was the track that I loved when I heard it live but hadn't paid much attention to on the album. Fever Ray's second album has a lot of loud, bouncy, vaguely punk electropop that drew my attention, but this is a great slow build.
  • Sliver byNirvana (spotify) - Not my favorite song, but there are a bunch of "deep cut" Nirvana tracks that I realized I never looked up to see what the lyrics are and the chorus to this one is .... "grandma take me home"!!
  • Prisencolinensinainciusol byAdriano Celentano (spotify) - Yes, I was reminded of this by an episode ofTed Lasso during it's [horribly disappointing] final season (alright). I'd heard it before as kind of a novelty and learned in the show that it's actually kind of a banger (alright).
  • Badala Zamana byZohra (spotify) - Found this one from a spotify station starting with Prisencolinensinainciusol, and just found it really light and fun.
  • Miss You byOliver Tree (spotify) - I find that Oliver Tree's musical-personal-as-living-meme schtick comes off as desperate more than funny, and it distracts from the fact that he really can write an extremely catchy whiny pop song.
  • We Have Explosive byFuture Sound of London (spotify) - Loud, mid-90s techno anyone? Anyone? —Rhododendritestalk \\17:15, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

July 2024

[edit]
  • Punk Rock Loser byViagra Boys (spotifyyoutube). Filed under "they still make this kind of music?" Swedish post-punk band that seems to really enjoy making fun of manosphere-like themes, singing about sports and cowboys and being dumb and trying to be cool with all the blasé and irony of the best Williamsburg barista.
  • This Town byThe Go-Go's (spotify). I'm very, very late to the Go-Go's train. Been humming this one on and off for a month.
  • Cool Jerk byThe Capitols (spotify), which I've recently discovered is the best karaoke song.
  • Money Folder byMadvillain remixed byFour Tet (spotify).Madvillainy is an excellent album, but I find that I only ever listen to Four Tet's remixes anymore, which just ramp up the energy and musical weirdness.
  • Power! To the People byThe Make-Up (spotify). When I first came across The Make-Up circa 2003, they just seemed like they were trying too hard to be 70s-cool to the point it all came off as affectation rather than inspiration. Couldn't say what happened, but it works for me 20 years later.
  • Mnemophobia by Brainstory (spotify). Smooth, catchy r&b falsetto + electric guitar + harmonies.
  • Nobody Speak (youtube) & Blockbuster Night, Pt. 1 (spotify) byRun the Jewels. Run the Jewels go hard -- the music, the often hilarious insults and braggadocio, and social commentary. Nobody Speak was my introduction, with an excellent video.
  • Fingerbib by Alarm Will Sound (spotify), just a great orchestral cover ofAphex Twin.
  • Such a Lovely Thing byDeVotchKa (spotify). I don't remember who they opened for, but I saw DeVotchKa at some live show back in ~2005 and they were clearly the most memorable thing about that concert. Most ofHow It Ends is excellent. The fun instrumentation could easily slip into saccharine indie pop, but Nick Urata's absolutely-always-earnest-and-passionate vocals keep it grounded. —Rhododendritestalk \\18:26, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

January 2025

[edit]
  • Rebel Girl byBikini Kill (spotifyyoutube).Kathleen Hanna is the coolest. Bikini Kill is a band that makes it into my regular rotation every few years. This time it was because Hanna did an interview with Marc Maron. One thing I remember from the interview: when she formed Bikini Kill there were a lot of really macho, kind of misogynistic hardcore bands (assuming maybeCro-Mags?Agnostic Front?). As she started getting booked (or doing the booking), she'd talk about the various bands playing a show and, if one of those hardcore bands were in there, just refer to them as "stand-up comedy".
  • I Keep Forgettin' byMichael McDonald (spotifyyoutube). Smooth.
  • Damaged Goods byGang of Four (spotifyyoutube). I remember giving Gang of Four a shot a long time ago, and it just didn't work for me, but when I came across this track recentl, something about their [kind of simple] funk-punk was just super infectious -- hard not to move around a bit.
  • Cirice byGhost (spotifyyoutube). Ghost is basically what would happen if you took a metal band straight out of the late-80s/early-90s and put a theater kid in front. This particular track leans a little more metal than e.g.Mary on a Cross, but the theater is still there.
  • Never Fight a Man with a Perm byIdles (spotifyyoutube). If you took an angry, violentPeaky Blinders villain, gave him a punk band, and caught him in a moment of loud, slightly drunk criticism of the hypermasculine culture he's part of... you'd have this track.
  • Sweetest Kill byBroken Social Scene (spotifyyoutube). We're a long ways from the days when I felt like I *should* like Broken Social Scene, so this one snuck up on me. Don't remember how I came across it, but the melody is just so catchy and patient and satisfying.

Well congrats! This proves that you are just as certifiable as the rest of us! And I thought thatI was nerdy when I saw that one articlehad a totally needless fair use image and another one had a reallycrappy image. So I spent some quality camera time with my old LP collection and made new Commons:Categories for these two rather uninteresting and rarely viewed subjects. (No, I don't stalk your edits, and I rarely visit Twitter now, but when TFG gets indicted you have to take a look at what the site makes of it. ;-) Just in time for your announcement there.)cart-Talk21:28, 9 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Younger generations

[edit]

I was thinking of something you said when we talked last? An idea has kind of been bouncing around my head the past few days... maybe I could go around interviewing people around my age and seeing what we have in common and what we don't. Asking questions like

  • When did you start editing Wikipedia?
  • Why did you start editing Wikipedia?
  • If you could go back in time, what do you think would've helped you be a better editor?
  • Did you have help as a new editor? What worked and what didn't?
  • As a new editor, were you aware that there was a community behind the scenes?
  • Do you think you'll keep editing for the foreseeable future?
  • Were you involved with WikiEd? If so, what was that like?
  • Have you ever edited on mobile? Why or why not?

I think the cumulative effect of asking these questions might be useful. What do you think?Clovermoss🍀(talk)19:11, 17 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Clovermoss: -cumulative effect of asking these questions might be useful - Could be. Something I've found interesting is how wikiphilosophies seem to evolve with each "generation" of Wikipedians. If we think of Wikipedia's 22 years as being four generations, I guess I'm in the second generation. When I got here, my take on things like deletion, blocking, immediatism, etc. was a bit different from some of the old timers. These days I find that the newer generations make me feel like one of those old-timers (and I guess I am?). To reduce what I mean to a single example, back in 2013 I was most often called a deletionist. These days, though I don't feel like my take on deletion has changed that much, I find myself lumped in more often with the inclusionists (to the extent those sides even exist at all, of course). To your questions, there's one in there about Wiki Ed, which sure seems like it's intended for me, but I don't think I'd be included in the "people around my age" that you started with. :) Happy to answer if it would be helpful, though. —Rhododendritestalk \\17:54, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, the WikiEd question was directed at you :) Since I've never really interacted with that side of the community, I was curious about the similarities and differences we face. Ever since you said something about how people can struggle even with a ton of resources at their disposal... I just went on to this whole train of thought full of ideas. Is it possible that you might have some idea of how I could connect with some students working with WikiEd? I really think it'd be insightful to interview some if they're open to that but I have no idea where to start. I like to plan things out a bit before I actually go about doing things.Clovermoss🍀(talk)00:52, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's okay if you don't really know if that's possible, though. Even if you could point me in the direction of someone who might be able to that'd be useful. Regardless, it was nice to meet you and I appreciate everything we've talked about.Clovermoss🍀(talk)01:49, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Clovermoss: Late reply, sorry.
Is it possible that you might have some idea of how I could connect with some students working with WikiEd? - You can always head over to dashboard.wikiedu.org, where you can find all the classes active in a given semester (and all of the courses Wiki Ed has supported since ~2015). You might have more luck reaching out to the professors, though, who can then connect you with interested students.
Some brief other answers:
When did you start editing Wikipedia? - 2007. A professor had us edit Wikipedia. I was fascinating by how much of a garbage fire it wasn't, and set out to study it. Highly active editing came a few years later.
If you could go back in time, what do you think would've helped you be a better editor? - I don't think I'd change anything, now that I think about it. There were times that I had different ideas of "what a Good Wikipedia ought to do" but in hindsight that's mostly nonsense. I did exactly what I wanted to do on Wikipedia at each stage, I suppose. If the question were "what advice would I give myself" it would probably be to think about anonymity a little more.
Did you have help as a new editor? What worked and what didn't? - I was an atypical newbie in that I spent a long time reading and researching before diving into editing, so I didn't need too much help. I learned from some veterans when I was researching, and when I solicited feedback on my first article. The names FT2, Dana Boomer, Wikid77, and DGG come to mind as early, helpful interactions (sadly now one is deceased, one long-inactive, and one banned).
Do you think you'll keep editing for the foreseeable future? - Yes. There have been a few discussions and trends over the past few years that I've found discouraging/demotivating, but there's just too much that I like about this place.
Were you involved with WikiEd? If so, what was that like? - It was overall a very positive experience. I was already teaching with Wikipedia and they needed an interim program manager shortly after my last semester teaching... then I stuck around for five years. Generally positive. It reframed my relationship to Wikipedia a bit as it meant I was no longer purely a volunteer (even if I separated my work and volunteer accounts), but I didn't let it affect my editing all that much. There were a bunch of layoffs early in the pandemic, which included me. The upside is it gave me time to finish my dissertation. :)
Have you ever edited on mobile? Why or why not? - Almost never. It's just too hard with a tiny screen. —Rhododendritestalk \\18:50, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mind the late reply. Thanks for your input :) I will check out the dashboard. Do you mind if I mention your answers to my interview questions in a userspace essay?Clovermoss🍀(talk)19:42, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Statement draft

[edit]

Wikipedia owes its existence to the dedication of volunteers who contribute encyclopedic content according tofundamental principles, often with as much commitment as one would give a full time job. These volunteers make personal sacrifices to ensure that what the world sees when it visits Wikipedia is as comprehensive and reliable as possible. These individuals are not paid for their work, but driven by the conviction that free access to knowledge has the power to improve lives.

Unfortunately, as we've become more popular, we have attracted not just those who want to influence Wikipedia for personal gain, but those who see our editorial policies as a threat to their own power. That means the labor we donate to pursue ideals likeneutral point of view comes with vulnerabilities. The anonymity or pseudonymity of many contributors is essential to maintaining our integrity and diversity of voices. But it is fragile. Sometimes, members of our community find themselves navigating complex, hostile political and legal landscapes just for the audacity of upholding our policies. Protecting volunteers like these is not merely an act of gratitude; it isabsolutely necessary for the future of our project.

Many people, companies, and governments look at articles that meet our standards for neutrality and sourcing and want to replace them with their own preferred narratives. If they can effectively use their money, influence, and power to pierce anonymity and threaten, intimidate, sue, or arrest volunteers simply for making edits in accordance with our basic policies, it threatens the neutrality and accuracy of those articles. More importantly, it signals that these are effective strategies for silencing voices one doesn't like and creates a pernicious chilling effect for all contributors.

For an anonymous or pseudonymous contributor here, there is exactly one organization with the capacity--and the responsibility--to defend Wikipedians against powerful entities: the Wikimedia Foundation. We, the undersigned, appreciate the complexities of international legal disputes over release of personally identifying information and commend the foundation for both routinely resisting disclosure and assisting editors who find themselves in legal jeopardy. However, in light of cases around the world whereby powerful people seek to influence Wikipedia by attacking its users, we call upon the foundation to:

(1) prioritize the safety and well-being of volunteers even if it comes with a risk of legal action against the foundation;
(2) create a dedicated team of staff and advisorsfocused on procedural, technical, and legal assessment, strategies, and tools to preserve the pseudonymity or anonymity of contributors who need it. While this statement comes during a high-profile case, these are principles which apply broadly, and this team should be prepared to address censorship threats both in places where they exist now and where they may arise in the future as political landscapes evolve.

We, the volunteers, must be able to contribute with the assurity that the Wikimedia Foundation will defend those of us whose guilt is in upholding our shared principles, and will hold that defense even if it comes at a cost. Because the cost of failing is even greater. The choice to stand firm for our most vulnerable contributors in the face of censorship is an ethical one--it's existential. It is a fundamental decision to preserve the independence, credibility, and mission of the world's largest free encyclopedia.

[putting this here because it's a very rough draft and I don't want to dump more text over at VPW] —Rhododendritestalk \\04:54, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Just a quick note to say that I hope you don't feel that I stepped on your toes here, Rhododendrites. I saw a consensus emerging for a concise letter and was encouraged by Ipigott (albeit based on what turned out to be an incorrect assumption) to write a shorter draft, and felt like time was pressing. Regards,Espresso Addict(talk)02:48, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, no worries at all. I'm not worried about credit, if that's what you mean. As I just wrote at VPW, I'm just not sure I want to sign on to something that's explicitly about one ongoing case rather than a broader statement of principles. —Rhododendritestalk \\14:25, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Rhododendrites, and obviously everyone can only support whatever wording they feel personally works for them. We're all on the same page here. I'd encourage you to work up a broader general statement of principles that doesn't mention the case to collect signatures in parallel, because in the current (US) climate, it is clear that this is just going to be the tip of a very big iceberg, and I'd like more clarity from WMF about what they are going to do about it. Cheers,Espresso Addict(talk)00:52, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I got those numbers from the Proposition 1 page ofthe official elections site. Blank votes are not valid and should not be factored into the final result percentages.Jon698 (talk)21:45, 11 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, that's the discrepancy, then. Blank votes are valid -- invalid votes are counted separately. Blanks are a quantification of confusion, ambivalence, lack of information, etc. —Rhododendritestalk \\01:29, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Heads up about your edit on the misinformation related to abortion page.

[edit]

Hi there. You recently made some edits to this page:Misinformation related to abortion. I wanted to let you know, that I personally agree with you. I personally believe that it should be presented as fact, as you did in your edit that "it is not possible for the fetus to experience pain before 24 weeks of gestation" instead of "The prevailing viewpoint among most medical organizations..." I also agree with you that we should not be including a minority viewpoint most present in the Linacre Quarterly - a Catholic Medical journal.

Unfortunately, there is an anti-abortion advocate who's extremely active on the talk page and trying to come to consensus on certain things has made things clunky. The way the section is phrased now is what was begrudgingly agreed to on the talk page. So, unfortunately, I have tentatively reverted your edit in favor of the one that was technically reached by consensus since that just happened today.

That being said, if you feel strongly, and prepared to wade into the talk page of that article, feel free to keep the conversation going as to why that part should potentially be changed. (I definitely would be in favor of that paragraph being more definitive toward the current medical literature.)InquisitiveWikipedian (talk)01:31, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't seem ideal when the best sources don't appear to equivocate. Posted over atWikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Medicine#Misinformation_related_to_abortion_could_use_some_additional_eyes_from_this_project to get additional opinions. Looks like the talk page was mostly a back-and-forth between the two of you. —Rhododendritestalk \\03:14, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. Thank you for saying so. And yeah, it's mainly me and him and I think two other editors have chimed in now and again on some of the topics. I'm trying to be as collaborative as possible without completely threatening the integrity of the page. So, I appreciate you trying to get more people in the conversation. Thank youInquisitiveWikipedian (talk)03:25, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Query

I'm currently writing the article for theOfficial White House Portraits of Barack and Michelle Obama that were comissioned by the White House Historical Association. I've previously written the official portraits of theReagans, theClintons and theBushes. Your incredible research of Michelle's portrait would be vital to and most welcome in the article - would you like to add it once I have launched the article or could I interpolate it and main article a link on theSharon Sprung page? I'm not sure how to proceed! RegardsNo Swan So Fine (talk)22:25, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

HiNo Swan So Fine - glad you'll be working on that article. Probably what makes sense is to expand the summary in the Sprung article and add a{{main}} template, and add a brief summary of Sprung to the article you're working on? I'm pretty overwhelmed with real-life projects at the moment, but happy to take a look at the article when it's available. —Rhododendritestalk \\20:19, 28 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

American avocet

TheAmerican avocet (Recurvirostra americana) is a largewader in the avocet andstilt family,Recurvirostridae, found in North America. It spends much of its time foraging in shallow water or on mud flats, often sweeping its bill from side to side in water as it seekscrustacean andinsect prey. The bird is around 40–51 cm (16–20 in) in length and has a bill which is black, pointed, and curved slightly upwards towards the tip. Its breeding habitat consists of marshes, beaches, prairie ponds, and shallow lakes in theMidwestern United States and southern Canada. This American avocet was photographed inJamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge East Pond, New York City, United States.

Precious anniversary

[edit]
Precious
Nine years!

It was lovely to see "your" bird yesterday! - see my talk for music --Gerda Arendt (talk)06:55, 30 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

ThanksGerda Arendt. Listening to Bach now. I know little about Bach, and this makes me recall a question I have. Maybe you can help. :) About 20 years ago I was interviewing an indie rock musician,John Vanderslice, for my little radio program. At some point he went on a tear, gettingvery nerdy about music, and got me way out of my depth. At one point he said he was exploring "Bachic dissonance". I just smiled and acted like I knew what I was talking about, because I was not a good interviewer. :) But I remember it because afterwards I went to my friend outside the studio and said something like "what am I supposed to say about 'Bachic dissonance'??" Does that mean anything to you? Perhaps you can help me now, two decades later! —Rhododendritestalk \\22:36, 30 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what he meant but Bach is known for using dissonance - more than others - to express tension, sadness, suffering ... Perhaps listen tothis Crucifixus. - I had to singa funeral service for a friend today, but the music chosen was intentionally on the uplifting side and for consolation, which Bach could do also better than others. --Gerda Arendt (talk)22:50, 30 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Understandability guideline workshop

[edit]

Hello there. I was wondering if you had timeto give feedback on theworkshop text for the understandability guideline (comparison with the existing text). Always tough to write guidelines for a wide variety of topic areas, and would love to hear if the new text works for articles related to law. The goal is to make the understandability guideline more useable and concrete. If we could get an example in from the field, that would be even better :). More general feedback is also very welcome. I'm happy to trade for a review at GAN if you'd like!—Femke 🐦 (talk)09:04, 30 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

HiFemke and thanks for the invitation. I have to say, I don't think I've ever seen that guideline before! Before I give it a review, to be clear are you looking for feedback on thenew guideline or on thechanges? Also, I should say I'm not a lawyer and don't have much legal expertise. I get a little bit into tech policy as an internet researcher, so wound up with a couple law articles at GAN, but I don't know if I'd be much help on best practices for presenting the technical side of the law. Regardless, happy to review with or without a GAN review (at some point I'll probably have to trade someone in order to getUnited Nations Convention on Cybercrime up to GA before it's in the news for the signing ceremony in October -- if theAmerican Privacy Rights Act article is any indication, the UN article won't likely get reviewed in 2025 :/ :/ -- I presume my kvetching about that in Discord is what led to this invitation). —Rhododendritestalk \\22:29, 30 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I looked at the open GANs and FACs to try and get at least one person per major technical topic area to look at it before it's RfC time. In terms of familiarity, the guideline's most-cited part is probablyWP:EXPLAINLEAD. It's an undervalued part of our P&Gs, possibly because it's not that practical?
I'm mostly interested in feedback on changes, even though I'm also keen on hearing if there's stuff unnecessary or missing. One of the interesting bits I found in the research for the rewrite: assuming prior knowledge starts when you become familiar with a topic, not when you're an expert.—Femke 🐦 (talk)06:26, 31 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Arenal Volcano

Arenal Volcano is astratovolcano in north-western Costa Rica, in the province ofAlajuela. It is within theArenal Volcano National Park. The volcano is conically shaped with a height of 1,633 metres (5,358 ft) and a crater with a diameter of 140 metres (460 ft). Arenal is a young volcano, estimated to be less than 7,500 years old. The volcano was dormant for hundreds of years and exhibited two craters at its summit, with minor fumaroles activity, covered by dense vegetation. In 1968 it erupted unexpectedly, destroying the small town of Tabacón. Due to the eruption three more craters were created on the western flanks but only one of them exists today. By duration, Arenal's eruption from 1968 to 2010 is the tenth longest volcanic eruption on Earth since 1750. Since 2010, Arenal has been dormant.

Can you clarify this guideline please: On one hand it says, "Expressions of support, use of particular hashtags, comments about donating to a campaign, and other forms of praise of a candidate is often included as an "endorsement"." but the heading says "Lists of endorsements should only include endorsements which are specifically articulated as "endorsements"."

Dark Mode will soon be available on all Wikimedia sites.
  • Mobile Editing:Insights on mobile web editing on Wikipedia in 2025 are now available. This report highlights that ~95% of IP mobile users editing via wikitext open the editor but make no changes at all, a vast untapped potential. It also pinpoints where contributors most often drop off.
  • Dark Mode:Dark Mode user interface will be rolled out on all Wikimedia sites on October 29. All anonymous users of Wikimedia sites will have the option to activate a color scheme that features light-colored text on a dark background. This is designed to provide a more comfortable reading experience, especially in low-light situations.
  • Community wishlist extension:The new Community Wishlist extension has been released. This will allow users to add tags to their wishes to better categorise them, and (in a future iteration) to filter them by status, tags and focus areas. It will also be possible to support individual wishes again, as requested by the community in many instances.
  • Paste Check:22 Wikis are now testing a new Edit Check feature,Paste Check, to help avoid and fight copyright violations. When editors paste text into an article, Paste Check prompts them to confirm the origin and licensing of the content.
  • Tone Check: The Wikimedia Foundation is working on a new check for newcomers:Tone check. Using a prediction model, this check will encourage editors to improve the tone of their edits.
  • Search Suggestions:Search Suggestions was deployed on English Wikipedia. Upon clicking an empty search bar, logged-out users see suggestions of articles for further reading. The feature is available on both desktop and mobile.
  • Unsupported Tools Working Group: A newUnsupported Tools Working Group has been formed to help prioritize and review requests for support of unmaintained extensions, gadgets, bots, and tools. The group has chosenVideo2Commons as the first tool for its pilot cycle. The group will explore ways to improve and sustain the tool over the coming months.

The naming contest for the new Wikimedia project, known until now as Abstract Wikipedia, is ongoing.
  • Making it easier to say thanks: Users on most wikis will now havethe ability to thank a comment directly from the talk page it appears on. Before this change, thanking could only be done by visiting the revision history of the talk page.
  • Account security: Improvements toaccount security and two-factor authentication (2FA) features were enabled across all wikis. Another part of the project is making 2FA generally available to all users. Along with editors with advanced privileges, such as administrators and bureaucrats, 40% of editors now have access to 2FA. You can check if you have access atSpecial:AccountSecurity.
  • Abstract Wikipedia:The naming contest for the new Wikimedia project, known until now as Abstract Wikipedia, is ongoing.Voting is now open until November 3.
  • Tech News: Read updates from Tech News week42 and43 including the community-submitted tasks that wereresolved last week.
  • Wikimedia apps: The Wikipedia iOS App launched an A/B/C test of improvements to theTabbed browsing feature into Beta for select regions & languages. Called“More dynamic tabs”, the experiment adds user-requested improvements and introduces article recommendations within the tabs overview, showing “Did you know” or “Because you read” content depending on how many tabs are open.
  • CampaignEvents extension:Campaignevents extension will be deployed to all remaining wikis during the week of 17 November 2025. The extension currently includes three features:Event Registration, Collaboration List, and Invitation List. For this rollout,Invitation List will not be enabled on Wikifunctions and MediaWiki unless requested by those communities.
  • Event registration tool: Autoconfirmed users onsmall andmedium wikis with the extension can now useEvent Registration without the Event Organizer right. Hi Rhododendrites,

This is to let you know thatFile:Large milkweed_bug_(23188).jpg, afeatured picture you uploaded, has been selected as the English Wikipedia'spicture of the day (POTD) for November 12, 2025. A preview of the POTD is displayed below and can be edited atTemplate:POTD/2025-11-12. If you have any concerns, please place a message atWikipedia talk:Picture of the day. Large milkweed bug

Thelarge milkweed bug (Oncopeltus fasciatus) is a medium-sizedhemipteran (true bug) in the familyLygaeidae. It is distributed throughout North America, from Central America through Mexico, the Caribbean and the United States, to southern Canada. It inhabits disturbed areas, roadsides, and open pastures. Due to this widespread geographic distribution, this insect exhibits varying life history trade-offs depending on the population location, including differences in wing length and other traits based on location. Adult large milkweed bugs are around 11–12 mm in length and have a red/orange and black X-shaped pattern on their wings underneath the triangle that is typical to hemipterans. Its diet often consists ofmilkweed seeds, but it has also been observed feeding on aphids, monarch caterpillar eggs, and larvae, displaying opportunistic behavior. The insect is often used as amodel organism and reared for laboratory experiments due to being easy to rear and handle, short developmental time, fewinstars, and highfecundity. This large milkweed bug was photographed in theGreen-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York City, United States.

NPOV on contentious topic

[edit]

Hi Rhododendrites, it's nice to meet you. I'm wondering if you could weigh in on some of my proposed updates toRyan Kavanaugh's article. Kavanaugh is a film financier and, as you are a participant inWP:Media, I thought the topic might interest you. Beyond that, because the page is considered acontentious topic, I would appreciate a neutral, level-headed editor reviewing my request, which you'll find here:Talk:Ryan Kavanaugh#Trimming details for NPOV. I'd be happy to discuss further, as well. Thank youFrancine72790 (talk)16:42, 10 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

American robin

TheAmerican robin (Turdus migratorius) is amigratory bird in thethrush family, Turdidae. It is named after theEuropean robin because of its reddish-orange breast, though the two species are not closely related. The American robin is widely distributed throughout North America, wintering from southern Canada to central Mexico and along the Pacific coast. The species is active mostly during the day and assembles in large flocks at night. Its diet consists of invertebrates (such as beetle grubs, earthworms, and caterpillars), fruits, and berries. The robin's nest consists of long coarse grass, twigs, paper, and feathers, and is smeared with mud and often cushioned with grass or other soft materials. It is among the earliest birds to sing at dawn, and its song consists of several discrete units that are repeated. This American robin was photographed inGreen-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York City.
