March Madness 2017

[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running itsMarch Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be foundhere for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards,AustralianRupert (talk) &MediaWiki message delivery (talk)07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Edit war warning

[edit]
Stop icon

Your recent editing history atEd Gillepsie shows that you are currently engaged in anedit war. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use thetalk page to work toward making a version that representsconsensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. SeeBRD for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevantnoticeboard or seekdispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporarypage protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in your beingblocked from editing—especially if you violate thethree-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than threereverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly.Jytdog (talk)03:25, 31 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Again, I do not appreciate the continued threats.Instaurare (talk)20:05, 6 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You are really investing in the dramah now. There is no threat. (both of those - the dramah-making and describing notice of DS as a "threat" -- are newbie things, btw, not "regulars" things). In any case, I've given you notice and that lasts for a year. And hey the silly season is almost over.Jytdog (talk)00:56, 7 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've never seen the essayWP:DTTR before. That's a seriously awful essay. Template messages apply not just to the editor receiving the template, but also as a marker so that other editors can easily see what kind of involvement people have had with what pages. Like me looking at this one for example and being able to quickly deduce on sight that there may be a dispute occurring on a page. Without them, it would cumulatively take untold hours for editors to scan through talk pages and know about what's happening.I'll open a thread on the essay, but for now you should be aware that DS is not just accepted but required as a process of administrative action (all of which can be read about on the project page for the template).Edaham (talk)04:21, 7 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 theMilitary history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members ofWikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. Jesus of Nazareth

Jesus (7–2 BC to 30–33 AD) is the central figure ofChristianity, whom the teachings of most Christian denominations hold to be theSon of God and the awaitedMessiah of theOld Testament. Virtually all modern scholars of antiquity agree that ahistorical Jesus existed, although there is little agreement on the reliability of thegospel narratives and how closely the biblical Jesus reflects the historical Jesus. Most scholars agree that Jesus was a Jewish preacher from Galilee, was baptized byJohn the Baptist, and was crucified in Jerusalem on the orders of the Roman prefect,Pontius Pilate. Christians generally believe that Jesus was conceived by theHoly Spirit, born of a virgin, performedmiracles, founded the Church, died by crucifixion as a sacrifice to achieveatonement, rose from the dead, andascended into heaven, from whichhe will return. The great majority of Christians worship Jesus as the incarnation of God the Son, the second of three Persons of aDivine Trinity. A few Christian groups reject Trinitarianism, wholly or partly, as non-scriptural.In Islam, Jesus is considered one of God's important prophets and the Messiah. (Full article...)

Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act

[edit]

Hi Instaurare. I just read through the wiki for the PCUCPA and it looks like you've done a fine job maintaining it. My friend and I are developing a service for American citizens to see government activity/legislation, vote on it, track their representation, and influence their elected officials. The legislation summaries we're pulling in from the Library of Congress are rarely good. Here's what thePain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act looks like on our bill page. It used to be worse, but all we did was some light formatting and removed duplicate content. Our goal with summaries on our site is to help an average American form an opinion on a piece of legislation in 3-10 minutes of reading. Would you have any interest in helping us make these summaries simpler to understand for American voters?Vf-lee (talk)20:37, 20 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Project News
ByLionelt

Last month's auspicious relaunch ofour newsletter precipitated something of an uproar in the Wikipedia community. What started as a localized edit war over censorship spilled over onto the Administrator's Noticeboard finally ending up at Wikipedia's supreme judicial body ArbCom.Their ruling resulted in the admonishment of administratorFuture Perfect at Sunrise for his involvement in the dispute. The storywas reported by Wikipedia's venerable flagship newspaperThe Signpost.

The question of whether to delete all portals--including the 27 Christianity-related portals--was put to the Wikipedia community. Approximately 400 editors have participated in theprotracted discussion. Going by !votes, Oppose deletion has a distinct majority. The originalChristianity Portal was created on November 5, 2005 byBrisvegas and the following year he successfully nominated the portal for Featured Portal. The Transhumanist has revivedWikiProject Portals with hopes of revitalizing Wikipedia's system of 1,515 portals.

The reconstructed frame of Nate Saint's plane used in Operation Auca

Operation Auca was an attempt by fiveEvangelicalChristianmissionaries from theUnited States to make contact with theHuaorani people of therainforest ofEcuador. The Huaorani, also known as the Aucas, were an isolated tribe known for their violence, both against their own people and outsiders who entered their territory. With the intention of being the firstProtestants to evangelize the Huaorani, the missionaries began making regular flights over Huaorani settlements in September 1955, dropping gifts. After several months of exchanging gifts, onJanuary 2,1956, the missionaries established a camp at "Palm Beach", asandbar along theCuraray River, a few miles from Huaorani settlements. Their efforts culminated onJanuary 8,1956, when all five—Jim Elliot,Nate Saint, Ed McCully, Peter Fleming, andRoger Youderian—were attacked andspeared by a group of Huaorani warriors. The news of their deaths was broadcast around the world, andLife magazine covered the event with a photo essay. The deaths of the men galvanized the missionary effort in the United States, sparking an outpouring of funding for evangelization efforts around the world. Their work is still frequently remembered in evangelical publications, and in 2006, was the subject of the film productionEnd of the Spear. (more...)

The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, painting by Moritz Daniel Oppenheim, 1862. This depiction departs significantly from the historical record of how Mortara was taken—no clergy were present, for example.
The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara

TheMortara case was a controversy precipitated by thePapal States' seizure of Edgardo Mortara, a six-year-old Jewish child, from his family inBologna, Italy, in 1858. The city'sinquisitor, Father Pier Feletti, heard from a servant that she had administeredemergency baptism to the boy when he fell sick as an infant, and the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition held that this made the child irrevocably a Catholic. Because the Papal States had forbidden the raising of Christians by members of other faiths, it was ordered that he be taken from his family and brought up by the Church. After visits from the child's father, international protests mounted, butPope Pius IX would not be moved. The boy grew up as a Catholic with the Pope as a substitute father, trained for the priesthood in Rome until 1870, and wasordained in France three years later. In 1870 theKingdom of Italy captured Rome during theunification of Italy, ending the pontifical state; opposition across Italy, Europe and the United States over Mortara's treatment may have contributed to its downfall. DISCUSSION REPORT
WikiProject Conservatism Comes Under Fire

ByLionelt

WikiProject Conservatism was atopic of discussion at the Administrators' Noticeboard/Incident (AN/I). Objective3000 started a thread where he expressed concern regarding the number of RFC notices posted on the Discussion page suggesting that such notices "could result in swaying consensus by selective notification." Several editors participated in the relatively abbreviated six hour discussion. The assertion that the project is a "club for conservatives" was countered by editors listing examples of users who "profess no political persuasion." It was also noted that notification of WikiProjects regarding ongoing discussions is explicitly permitted by theWP:Canvassing guideline.

At one point the discussion segued to feedback aboutThe Right Stuff. Member SPECIFICO wrote: "One thing I enjoy about the Conservatism Project is the handy newsletter that members receive on our talk pages." Atsme praised the newsletter as "first-class entertainment...BIGLY...first-class...nothing even comes close...it's amazing." Some good-natured sarcasm was offered with Objective3000 observing, "Well, they got the color right" and MrX's followup, "Wow. Yellow is the new red."

Admin Oshwah closed the thread with the result "definitely not an issue for ANI" and directing editors to the project Discussion page for any further discussion.Editor's note: originally the design and color of The Right Stuff was chosen to mimic an old, paper newspaper.

RECENT RESEARCH
Research About AN/I

ByLionelt

Reprinted in part from theApril 26, 2018 issue of The Signpost; written byZarasophos

This graph was using thelegacy Graph extension, which is no longer supported. It needs to be converted to thenew Chart extension.

Out of over one hundred questioned editors, only twenty-seven (27%) are happy with the way reports of conflicts between editors are handled on the Administrators' Incident Noticeboard (AN/I), according to arecent survey . The survey also found that dissatisfaction has varied reasons including "defensive cliques" and biased administrators as well as fear of a "boomerang effect" due to a lacking rule for scope on AN/I reports. The survey also included ananalysis of available quantitative data about AN/I. Some notable takeaways:

  • 53% avoided making a report due to fearing it would not be handled appropriately
  • "Otherwise 'popular' users often avoid heavy sanctions for issues that would get new editors banned."
  • "Discussions need to be clerked to keep them from raising more problems than they solve."

In the wake of Zarasophos' article editors discussed the AN/I survey atThe Signpost andalso at AN/I. Ironically a portion of the AN/I thread was hatted due to "off-topic sniping." To follow-up the problems identified by the research project the Wikimedia Foundation Anti-Harassment Tools team and Support and Safety team initiated a discussion. You can express your thoughts and ideashere.

Edit-warring onRalph Northam

[edit]
Stop icon

Your recent editing history shows that you are currently engaged in anedit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree.

Being involved in an edit war can result in you beingblocked from editing—especially if you violate thethree-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than threereverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly..Snooganssnoogans (talk)23:25, 1 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Conflict of interest in American politics andSusan B. Anthony List

[edit]

Please stop your combative editing of topics in which you have a conflict of interest. In December 2009,your sockpuppet case proved that you are connected to the American political action committeeSusan B. Anthony List, which gives you a conflict of interest regarding American politics and, of course, the SBA List itself. You can suggest edits on the talk page, and argue your views there.Binksternet (talk)06:23, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Nice to see you too, Bink. Do you really want to rehash stuff from nearly a decade ago? As I wrote on your page I did some volunteer work for them senior year of high school to bolster my college resume, was never paid, haven't had contact with anyone there since then, and have edited the article in the years since without anyone finding it necessary to ban me from editing the article.Instaurare (talk)06:54, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

We're still reaching pretty far back but I'll play along. Okay, I wasn't truthful in 2010 when I made that statement when I was 18 years old. (As I said I did stupid stuff early on and paid the price, and apparently still paying the price.) Wasn't my brother. I don't have any brothers, I'm an only child. I made it up trying to avoid some of the heat. Should've readWP:BROTHER first. I'm sorry. I'm sure this admission will be added to Binksternet's dossier on me and used as further evidence in the coordinated effort to topic ban me. But I am attempting to show good faith by that admission here.Instaurare (talk)03:56, 18 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

When God Writes Your Love Story: The Ultimate Approach to Guy/Girl Relationships is a 1999 book byEric andLeslie Ludy, an American married couple. After becoming a bestseller on the Christian book market, the book was republished in 2004 and then revised and expanded in 2009. The authors advisesingle people not to bephysically oremotionally intimate with others, but to wait for the spouse thatGod has planned for them.

The Ludys argue that one's love life should be both guided by and subordinate to one'srelationship with God. A Song for Simeon, is a 37-line poem written in 1928 by American-English poetT. S. Eliot (1888–1965). It isone of five poems that Eliot contributed to theAriel poems series of 38 pamphlets by several authors published byFaber and Gwyer. "A Song for Simeon" was the sixteenth in the series and included an illustration byavant garde artistEdward McKnight Kauffer. The poem's narrative echoes the text of theNunc dimittis, a liturgical prayer forCompline from the Gospel passage. Eliot introduces literary allusions to earlier writersLancelot Andrewes,Dante Alighieri andSt. John of the Cross. Critics have debated whether Eliot's depiction of Simeon is a negative portrayal of a Jewish figure and evidence ofanti-Semitism on Eliot's part.(more...)

Topic ban violation

[edit]

@Bishonen: I'll leave it to Bishonen to decide, but I have a feeling that this recent edit:https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sound_of_Freedom_(film)&diff=prev&oldid=1161377464may have been a violation of your topic ban on post-1932 American politics, since QAnon is partially a political movement. Caviezel and Tim Ballard are also quite actively outspoken on political matters.Fred Zepelin (talk)21:40, 22 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Warning

[edit]

I have moved downFred Zepelin's post here, to make it easier to find. Thank you, Fred Zepelin. Instaurare, your removal of a substantial and highly political portion ofSound of Freedom (film) certainly does violate yourcommunity topic ban from American politics; a ban which you have never appealed, as far as I can see. However, taking a look at your contributions, I note that you have otherwise been careful to stay away from the topics you were banned from in 2019. For that reason, and considering the amount of time that has elapsed, I am merely warning you this time. Make no mistake, though: it was an egregious violation, and if it happens again, you will receive escalating blocks.Bishonen |tålk05:10, 23 June 2023 (UTC).[reply]
