Retired

[edit]

Hello, Wikipedians. I'm still (mostly) retired. If you're a regular user, please watch the articles I've written to protect them. Go find a bad article and make it a good one. Best of luck to you all.Moni3 (talk)19:52, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

But from the look at your contributions, it looks like you're back! Mahalia Jackson, all right! That makes me so happy. Keep it up, pal, and know that I always have your back when it comes to your outstanding work here. Let me know if you need assistance.Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk)05:39, 9 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Christine. I'm sorry to disappoint though. I don't have anything on the horizon to write about. I just had a little time and it's about to run out so I don't know when I'll be able to write another article. Thank you for watching Mahalia Jackson and any of the other articles I've written.Enjoy.Moni3 (talk)13:26, 10 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

We thank you, and Eric and all who helped, today forDonner Party, introduced (in 2010): "A harrowing tale of bravery, hardship, and cannibalism in the old Wild West. It was hard to read about and hard to write; I hope the consensus here is that the effort was worthwhile. - It was sometimes miserable to feel the suffering of these people and I realize I have no sense of humor about their trials. What they went through was absolutely brutal. But I hope the article explains it well. I hope once you get started reading it, it will be impossible to stop. This isn't a train wreck that you cannot look away from. This disaster left train wreck far behind in the dust 38 miles back. Thanks for reading and let us know what we can do to improve it." - Thank you for still being interested! --Gerda Arendt (talk)06:30, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you today for the article, introduced (in 2008): "Someone remind me not to work on a book that has been read by nearly everyone in the English-speaking world ever again. But here I present one of the best-selling books of the 20th century, and love it or loathe it, its impact is duly noted in the article. I recognize its length at 71k, but I have been sensitive in what needs to be deleted and kept. Occasionally an article deserves that much space, and this is one of them. The novel has a lore that surrounds its creation, adaptation, and influence on culture. There is a previous nomination, linked above, numerous peer reviews: another one, and another, and one more, from WP:Novels and general Peer Review, and (here's my Oscar speech) it has recently had input by Awadewit, WillowW, JayHenry, citation cleanup by Maralia, and dual copy edits by LOCE members Scartol and Galena11. Thank you in advance for reading the article. I intend to do everything I'm capable of to get it featured. Self-nominator, major contributor." - we miss you, and many of those you thanked, and that spirit. - The latest article I wrote with love wasSequenza XIV. --Gerda Arendt (talk)08:57, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If anyone involved in FAs or GAs still watch this talk page...

[edit]

Can someone fill me in on current consensus about citations? I see users come into articles I wrote and completely overhaul all the citations for no apparent reason. Changing them into templates or changing the format, or whatever they do. Some users come in an cite more info from new sources, which is great, but they use a different cite method, giving the article two kinds of citations.

Is there an apparent reason I don't know because I've been away so long?

Honestly, nothing is more tedious in life than having to redo every citation in an FA. Am I justified in undoing their edits?

Thanks in advance.Moni3 (talk)16:01, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

At the FA level citations are supposed to be formatted consistently within the article, but there's no requirement to use one scheme or another, and generally changing the citation scheme is treated similar to ENGVAR issues where the person who first implemented a consistent scheme gets that locked in unless there's consensus to change it. The only citation scheme that's been deprecated is purely parenthetical referencing.Der Wohltemperierte Fuchstalk16:40, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The Good Article Rescue Barnstar
This is presented to you bythe GAR process in recognition of your sterling work in helpingSave Our Children retain its Good Article status. Keep up the good work!~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk)13:17, 26 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the thought, AirshipJungleman29. I appreciate the time and effort it took for you to post this to my talk page.

However, I should not have had to restore this article. The changes took 30 minutes to make. Anyone could have done it, including the GAR nominator. Wikipedia is a group project, but people involved in GAR and FAR seem to think it's specifically not their responsibility to make changes to the articles that are chosen for review. If no one addresses complaints, which are vague if ever listed, the article gets delisted as GA or FA -- and this seems to be an acceptable loss.

It should not be an acceptable loss. Why would anyone think it's acceptable to allow high quality articles to deteriorate and care nothing to restore them? I presume those who work in GAR and FAR understand what it's like to write and maintain high quality articles, so it's especially discouraging to the point of depressing that this is the current system.

All this explanation isn't just for the barnstar. Anyone who still reads my talk page, feel free to comment.Moni3 (talk)14:09, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Moni, good to see your name on my watchlist. I only have a moment and will expand on my comment later when I have more time, but basically the issue of GAR/FAR has been bugged me for a while. In particularWikipedia:Featured article review/Stephen Crane/archive1 really really bothered me. Yllosubmarine/Maria hasn't edited since 2014, yet the FAR criticized the article for not using a bio published in 2014. Who is supposed to do the updates? Are there little update elves checking for sources against articles written by retired and/or dead editors? I mention dead because Awadewit and SV. Anyway, yeah, you're on to something. Hopefully others will comment too.Victoria (tk)15:36, 29 June 2025 (UTC) formerly TK[reply]
Sounds like whoever made it a problem not to include that 2014 source volunteered to read and summarize that source. Or they should have.
One section above this on my talk page is a notification that Indigenous People of the Everglades Region is at FAR. It took me about 15 minutes to restore and update that one. Someone declared on the talk page in 2022 that it was going to FAR but when I asked what for no answer was given.
And Restoration of the Everglades recently went to FAR. All that had to be done was add a source or two, a paragraph to summarize current status of restoration efforts. Easily googlable and the sources are presented as easy facts for the general public to understand. Still, that was too much for those involved.
As Wikipedia ages and high quality article writers come and go, leave, retire, die (RIP) I don't think we're meeting the challenge appropriately.Moni3 (talk)02:21, 30 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I've not done a study or anything but it feels like there's possibly a disproportionate number of these on the pages of retired editors. I've noticed the notifications on your page, Yllosubmarine's, Yomangani's, Giano's and felt helpless because I barely am here enough to keep an eye on the articles I've brought through FA. I suppose I could unwatch the pages of people who've left, but that's not solution. As you say, as editors leave, others need to step up and help with maintenance. But getting anything to change here is tough - as you well know. I'd be interested to know what others think.Victoria (tk)21:26, 1 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Moni and everyone, I've rescued three ofUser:Wadewitz's articles from FAR/GAR and a fourth I didn't because it needed a lot more than 10 minutes or half an hour, and I just didn't have the time to do it, since it also required research and some level of expertise that I didn't have. Therefore, I let it lose its GAN status, unfortunately. I have her userpage on my watchlist, so I was aware of the threats. I think that's what needs to happen: those of us who don't want to see these articles make sure they get the notifications about the articles of these important but no-longer available editors and take it upon themselves to rescue them. One of the GARs even invoked my name because it's gotten out that I've been keeping an eye on Wadewitz's articles. I don't know if retired or deceased editors' articles are submitted more often, although it wouldn't surprise me, but I agree that those of us who choose to stick around remain diligent about them.Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk)01:46, 2 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
