A heads-up

[edit]

This is just to let you know that I did a WP:BOLD merge ofQueenstown ConstituencyQueenstown Constituency intoQueenstown Single Member Constituency

I sent this message because I only saw that you had already reverted a previous merge of the same two articlesafter my merge

I mean, if you like separate articles so much, how about turningRadin Mas ConstituencyRadin Mas Constituency andYio Chu Kang ConstituencyYio Chu Kang Constituency into proper articles? (oh alsoBukit Gombak ConstituencyBukit Gombak Constituency)Whyiseverythingalreadyused (talk)04:58, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Whyiseverythingalreadyused Your bold revert should wait for a discussion with me. I am not available for a week or two and should return to discuss this with you.
In brief, ask and understand the rationale behind the change, merge etc. Xxxx constituency exist before 1984 (iirc), Xxxx Smc after it. If a constituency is abolished before that year and recreated much after that, are they really the same or different places with the same name? If different, since they have different names, keep separate articles.~ JASWE (talk)02:20, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Justanothersgwikieditor by your logic, shouldn't Radin Mas Constituency and Radin Mas Single Member Constituency be separate articles?Whyiseverythingalreadyused (talk)02:35, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Just interjecting on behalf of JAWSE.@Whyiseverythingalreadyused: I refer to thisold discussion a few months ago regarding this issue. Basically it depends on the continuity between the constituencies. Let me use a fictional constituency, Bukit Manis SMC, to explain
  • If Bukit Manis Constituency still existed during the 1988 election, when the GRC/SMC system was introduced, then there's a clear continuity between Bukit Manis Constituency and Bukit Manis SMC
  • However, if Bukit Manis Constituency had already been abolished prior or during the 1988 election, then there's no way to establish a clear continuity. Like Jalan Kayu Constituency and Jalan Kayu SMC are still different.
And actually you are right; Radin Mas Constituency didn't exist in 1988. As such, by right they should be separated. But I'm not usually involved in these political pages, so I shall askAleain to help.--ZKang123 (talk·contribs)02:52, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Idk man let's wait for Aleain
On a side note, I'm really getting vibes from the time I tried to challenge JASWE's definition ofparliamentary predecessor/successor valuesin GRCs atSun Xueling and failed spectacularlyWhyiseverythingalreadyused (talk)02:57, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Whyiseverythingalreadyused: Oh, what sort of vibes are you getting? Wards are defined internally by the parties, not by ELD. Officially we do not have wards and divisions as a smaller electoral unit. You can check out how the PAP and WP defines and names the "wards" in Sengkang GRC. And this is detracting from the topic at hand.~ JASWE (talk)07:48, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think both points are fair, and honestly the confusion comes down to the EBRC's actions. The constant redrawing, renaming and reviving of constituencies (for both SMCs and GRCs) really does not make things easy to write or maintain on Wikipedia. We do not have to personally criticise each other since no one's really wrong here. Personally, I do think having separate articles for constituencies with the same name that existed before and after 1988 (e.g.Jalan Kayu Constituency andJalan Kayu SMC) "feels right", but it would be a huge and time-consuming task. We would also need to look into how similar their boundaries actually were and how long after 1988 were they revived. At this point I have just learnt to live with the somewhat inconsistent status-quo (e.g.Bukit Panjang SMC, a constituency that dates back to 1955, but had previously disappeared for a good 15 years before being revived with entirely different boundaries).Aleain (talk)10:27, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Aleain, I am totally fine with splitting Bukit Panjang SMC into two distinct articles, 1955 to 1991 and 2006 to present, as likely the boundaries are probably going to be very different between the 1991 and 2006. If we can find newspaper articles that talked about the 2006 reconstitution of the SMC, esp with regards to the boundaries, that will be the best as we will have sources how different or similar it is. If they are similar, a single article will be easier but if not, again, I am fine with splitting them into 1955 to 1991 and 2006 to present.
So for example, the article can be split out to Bukit Panjang Single Member Constituency (1955–1991) for anything till 1991 and the current article for 2006 to present. For constituency which disappeared for a single term of two, we can probably keep it as we might split into too many articles.~ JASWE (talk)08:22, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
