Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they arerequired to "have strong passwords andfollow appropriate personal security practices." We haveupdated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular,two-factor authentication remains anoptional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron1159821:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

External academic review and publication of Wikipedia pages

[edit]

Hi, This is a note to ask: would you be interested in submitting any articles for external, academic peer review to improve their accuracy and generate a citable publication?

TheWikiJournal of Science (www.wikijsci.org) andWikiJournal of Humanities (www.wikijhum.org) aim to couple the rigour of academic peer review with the extreme reach of the encyclopedia. For existing Wikipedia articles, it's a great way to get additional feedback from external experts. Peer-reviewed articles are dual-published both as standard academic PDFs, as well as having changes integrated back into Wikipedia. This improves the scientific accuracy of the encyclopedia, and rewards authors with citable, indexed publications. It also provides much greater reach than is normally achieved through traditional scholarly publishing.

TheWP:WikiJournal article nominations page should allow simple submission of existing Wikipedia pages for external review.T.Shafee(Evo&Evo)talk03:12, 18 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Synaphea spinulosa Taxonomic history (Mabberley's account)

[edit]

David Mabberley (Botanical Revelations,2019, p7) tells a far more likely story:

"The surviving specimen said to be from such 'herborisings' is held in the Conservatoire et Jardin botaniques in Geneva, Switzerland, and represents one of the the two species notable for being the first plants restricted to Australia to be named according to the Linnaean binomial convention in the 'sexual system' of the Swedish doctor and naturalist Carl Linnaeus (1707-78), a classification of plants base on the numbers of sexual parts (stamens and pistils) in the flowers.... They were named and illustrated in theFlora Indica (1768) of Nikolaas Burman (1733-93), a Dutch doctor and botanist,at least one of them coming from surgeon-botanist Christiaan Kleijnhoff (d. 1777), who established the first botanic garden in the tropics, in what is now called Jakarta, Indonesia. It is not known whether they were young plants from Kleijnhoff's garden (though neither is obvious from the names in his 'Descriptio plantarum'). However, if they had been raised from seeds collected on the voyage, this would perhaps help explain the absence of flowers, though Vlamingh was too late for the flowers of both species in any case. Indeed, as they have no flowers, the scraps were at first taken to be from ferns. The first is a wattle,Acacia truncata (Leguminosae), ..... The second, his 'Polypodium spinulosum', of which a specimen survives in Geneva, is aSynaphea (Proteaceae). Although these are technical 'firsts', no-one at the time knew where they had come from, and they therefore had no contemporary effect in revealing the flora of Australia to Europeans".

Thus, Mabberley believes that the specimens were grown in Jakarta from seed collected by Vlamingh and then later, with little idea of provenance, specimens sent to Burman... Thus what continued to exist from Vlamingh's men's herborising on the Swan, has very little to do with the careful pressing of specimens collected on site to be carried on a voyage, but rather more to do with a relatively swift collection of seed. So the statement "it is difficult to credit that far more abundant and showy plants would have been passed over in favour of the unremarkableS. spinulosum", would seem to be not to be the case.

Additionally, APNI gives the Burman reference as: Burman, N.L. (1768),Flora Indica: cui accedit series zoophytorum indicorum, nec non Prodromus Florae Capensis: 233,t. 67, fig. 1 in which Burman describes the type as "ex Java" (from Java).

I think there is a need to rewrite the last two sentences in the second paragraph of this section, to accommodate Mabberley's account, and am hoping you might be of the same view.MargaretRDonald (talk)01:50, 3 April 2020 (UTC).[reply]

Hi Margaret, thanks for an interesting read. I'm not very active here at the moment. However I'm delighted to know that there are other people in the world who share my obsession with botanical taxonomic history. Mabberley's material is very interesting; please do add it to the article.Hesperian02:09, 3 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an adminwill still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working onbetter tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you canread more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you cansubscribe tothe weekly technical newsletter.

We havetwo suggested ways this identity could work.We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You canlet us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Suggestion for Archiving Your Talk Page

[edit]

Hello Hesperian,

I hope this message finds you well. I've noticed that your Talk page has grown quite extensive, which is a testament to your active engagement on Wikipedia. However, I'd like to suggest considering archiving some of the older discussions.

Archiving can lead to several benefits, including:

  • Better Organization: It makes it easier for you and others to navigate through current discussions without scrolling through a long history of past conversations.
  • More Conducive Conversations: With a cleaner Talk page, it becomes simpler for other editors to engage in ongoing discussions and for you to manage responses.
  • Improved User Experience: For users on older computers or slower networks, a shorter page can significantly enhance loading times and overall accessibility.

If you're unsure about how to archive your Talk page, you can find detailed instructionshere. I'm also happy to assist if you need any help.

Thank you for considering this suggestion. Your contributions to Wikipedia are greatly valued, and I believe that archiving could make your Talk page even more effective as a tool for collaboration.

Best regards,skarz (talk)17:01, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in thisanonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on itsMeta page and view itsprivacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,
