I have a pair of questions for you concerning milhistbot: could the bot also track the nominators of successful A-class articles and list those contributors to help us track editors eligible for our various A-Class Medals, and if so could the bot also track FA/GA nominations in the same way?TomStar81 (Talk)04:19, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

The Bot works out who the nominators are, and updates the A-class medal tracking accordingly. When it gets to three, it scrubs that and creates an appropriate A-class medal nomination (oak leaves, swords or diamonds). That'sexactly what I was going to ask: can we track the entire milhist related PR/GAN/ACR/FAC/FPC material so we can rest assured that our members get the recognition they deserve, becuase quite frankly, doing by hand (like I'm doing now) is a royal pain in my fingers. And eyes. And back. And other associated body parts that get heavily taxed during such extended times on Wikipedia. As to maintaining reference formats, there is no directive that citation or bibliographical templates are the "standard", neither being sanctioned nor accepted as such. "fixing the references" as was noted, is not necessary nor mandated; this change merely represents your chosen use of a style guide. Over the last 10 years, the Wiki editors who created the templates, left in many "bugs" including that of second authors, that interfere with the output of the standard formatting that a reader would see. Most of the problems stem from simply the computer dictum of "garbage in, garbage out". The vast majority of wikipedia editors are not trained reference librarians or editors, subsequently, the templates were created as an aid, but many editors are not even aware that a wide range of templates are being employed, nearly all of them written in the APA (American Psychological Association) or simplified variant of it. The APA style guide is widely used in research papers at academic institutions for the Sciences, but the usual style guide for the Humanities and in most publishing, is the MLA (Modern Language Association)/Chicago style for bibliographic notations. Since the vast majority of what I edit is in the Humanities, i.e. history, I tend to use that style guide whenever possible. The Wiki templates do not accommodate the MLA formatting, and although they can be modified to output in MLA, most editors would not be able to make those changes. What can be done is to "scratch catalog" the "tracings" which markup does allow and will format properly. Now, just to assuage your notion that you are dealing with a Luddite, I have been using templates for cataloguing for over 30 years, with the introduction of automation in libraries, where I worked as a reference librarian and later, author and editor for publishing houses. The typical MARc record template, however, was "bullet-proof" and has been in use for decades. Whenever an article has a hodgepodge of referencing problems, it is often easier to institute a consistent style. Using templates may seem like the simple choice, but, in reality, it is often the one issue that is the hardest to correct to output properly. Understanding the MLA and Harvard citation style guides is not for the neophyte or casual editor, so templates will have to suffice. The cataloguing/referencing issue may already be a moot point as I see that the article has been already reverted to a previous version. I wasn't changing the reference format; I was expanding the article and making sure that everything was referenced. The article has more than doubled in size. I retained the language variant as US English perWP:ENGVAR andWP:RETAIN, the date format as MDY perWP:DATERET and the layout perWP:MOSFILM. I thought everything looked the same as before. I am not an editor or a librarian; I am a historian, so I don't use MLA or APA. I use the templates But if it bugs you, you can reformat the references. I never thought you were a neo-Luddite, although I was surprised that "film" is preferred over "movie", as movies are no longer shot on film. "Movie" has been relegated to the trash bin, mainly by convention in the Wiki: Film group. It figures that "film" is not the best choice, but is more adaptable in language as productions can be "filmed" but rarely "movied". The Wiki: Aviation group has also grappled with the similar colloquialisms of "plane/airplane/aeroplane" and made a similar decision to use the mainly imprecise "aircraft" default. As to referencing, the choice to use templates does indeed change the style guide from the MLA which was previously in use to the APA style guide which the Wiki templates output. I have tried for years to get the template creators to create a MLA variant to no avail. My problem with templates is that they are most often poorly understood by the casual editor and end up with some of the problems associated with EPA style such as second and third authors, date of first publication, or editions and that the author is associated with the date of publication rather than the publisher. Only within recent changes was the place of publication even considered. Trying to shoehorn media or non-print resources really shows up the inadequacies of the templates. As to what style to retain, I can live with the templates, as the GPA and GA reviewers invariably have no idea about any other referencing or bibliographical notations. For example, the use of second author in every style guide I know is written as first name, last name but then the templates treat the tracing as last, first name. Before my foray into the editing of this article, I had actually seen the film on TCM, began a few small changes but "fixed" the referencing style to "my own taste" much as what has happened again, however, since the article is not one that I have an abiding interest in or investment, my further contributions will be to assist in its development and possible candidacy for GA/FA review. As to my background in librarianship, it's a bit ofComme ci, comme ça; I also dabble in history as the editor of an online history site, and previously the editor of an aviation publication.FWiW Bzuk (talk)15:50, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

I have been working my way systematically through theManhattan Project articles. Most involve citing scientific and academic papers. The problem I have with the GA reviewers is that they demand a very high degree of consistency, which is hard for me to achieve with hand coding. I understand your rationale for editing, but let me give you a "for instance". Recently, another editor asked me to "workup"The Secret Invasion which after some research, resulted in a revision of the article, much like I had done withThe Beginning or the End. (Note: I have actually added more content than any other editor as per the edit history ofThe Beginning or the End article). Now after all that work, if someone had come along and begun to un-do the effort because they wanted to establish a referencing style of their own, I would likely be peeved, so would any other editor.

BTW, I have passed GA/FA reviews with my relying on a combination of MLA/Harvard Citation styles, I simply do not engage often in that type of work, as, depending on the reviewer, it can become a lengthy and convoluted exercise.FWiW Bzuk (talk)02:28, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

The problem is that the Bot goes looking for the latest review. It findsTalk:CAC/PAC JF-17 Thunder/GA2 exists but thatTalk:CAC/PAC JF-17 Thunder/GA3 does not, and concludes incorrectly that GA2 is the current one. Happy New Year, Hawkeye!UcuchaBot has been down for some time now. I've sent a couple of emails to Ucucha about it (among other things) but nothing's happened so I think it's time to look into possible replacements. The bot did four main FA-related tasks, namely bolding TFAs onWP:FA, adding a notice to FAC nominations by WikiCup participants, moving the "Older nominations" marker onWP:FAC, and notifying nominators of upcoming TFAs. All of these have been or are being done manually by various editors in the bot's absence but of course it'd be great to get them automated again. The catalyst for me asking now is WikiCup 2015 starting, and if you do think you'd like to have a go at replacing UcuchaBot's functions, the WikiCup check would be my first priority.   The problem is that the Bot could come along when you are working on it, so it allows this. In this case the name of the candidate page on the archive page did not match, so it did not find it. Bots are very fussy. I corrected the name of the page[10] and ordered the Bot to try again. This time it handled the article. Now that all the excitement has died down, I will put some procedures in place so these things are chased up in a timely manner.Hawkeye7 (talk)00:33, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

No, no it is fine. I just accidentally re-ran the old code instead of the new. It's all about matching the MILHIST template on the talk page. Originally, it was going too wide, and matching any page that mentioned MILHIST, generating a false positive. Now I made it narrower, and it matched WikiProject Military History and MILHIST, but some articles use WPMILHIST. Could you please unblock? There shouldn't be any changes that would affectFACBot when the new version gets rolled out, but there is some discussion of changing some of the parameter names at some point in the future. ("dykdate2" and "dykentry2" would be changed to "dyk2date" and "dyk2entry" to match the action and ft parameters. The same would go for parameters starting with "otd" and "itn".) I have been getting a lot of grief from SummerPhD over my talk page comments so I thought I would discuss this here since I don't know what I have permission to say. Apparently I am not allowed to ask questions, as the act of asking questions is stating an 'opinion'. I can see where some of what I have said might be construed that way, but asking a question?

Regarding the debate over the atomic bombing of Japan.

That would seem to be common sense but in Ryuichi Shimoda et al. v. The State (1963), a Japanese court ruled otherwise.

Is the ruling of a Japanese court considered valid? Aside from the fact that the victims typically are the first ones to cry foul, it is not an international court and thus it's opinions are only enforceable in Japan?

Even the international court (read Nuremburg) has problems with validity due to some capricious and arbitrary decisions.Jokem (talk)21:43, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

Talk pages are strictly for discussion of the articles and not their subject. So yo cannot go on asking questions. Also, many of the answers you seek could be found by reading the articles. Take SummerPhD's advice to heart before you get into trouble. But the rules are different here on a User:Talk page.

I am not an expert on international law, but I presume that it is the same as our system, where the decision of a lower court stands unless and until it is overturned by a higher court. I reverted your uncommented change of middle initial atPUREX as vandalism, before realizing it was probably serious. Trouble is, Herbert H. Anderson and Herbert L. Anderson look like maybe two different people. There's nothing in the Herbert L Anderson bios about PUREX, and the PUREX patent clearly shows Herbert H. Anderson. The patent says Herbert H. Anderson was in Newton Mass (as the application date 1947, perhaps?). Herbert L. Anderson's bio doesn't show him ever in Mass., and as far as I can tell not ever at the same place/time as co-inventor Asprey. That was actually not what he said. He said he could not find anything on "Google Books, Google Scholar, Questia and High Beam", which are other engines than the standard Google web search you did. Furthermore, the subject's last name literally translates to "state" or "country"[35], while his first name (in Latin script: "Ahmad") is extremely common in the Middle East. By searching for احمد کشوری, you are merely hitting all the pages containing the Farsi equivalents of "Ahmad" and "country". That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leaderFreikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to aFeatured Article on the 2001 filmFinal Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, asGodot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge,Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.

In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:

• Cwmhiraeth (submissions) tookBumblebee, alevel-4 vital article, toGood Article;
• AHeneen (submissions) worked-up theMalaysia Airlines Flight 370 article, also to Good Article status;

borderline in what sense--I would think that it was so far away from our proper sphere, that it seems to actually suggest it is aimed at someone doing this. When we talk about off wiki behavior of admins, we usually mean not things disgraceful in a general sense, but off wiki behavior directly harming WP, such as using an off-wiki forum to identify an editor. Not sure how "MOS Soldier" applies as justification for reverting my removal of the wiki-link from a red-link in today's feature article? I didn't ask for the page to be deleted; I just removed a broken link. To my eye it breaks the flow of the prose and fractionally disrupts the reader to leave a knight's "Sir" out of the piping. The fist trip to the Supreme Court has a bizarre procedural status. Kinsella did not seek cert, the US Government did (the named party in the District Court case). The bizarre part is that the Supreme Court granted the writ before the 4th Circuit heard the appeal. Especially unusual in that the District Court order was only a preliminary one. Special credit must be given to a number of high importance articles improved during the second round.

• Coemgenus (submissions) was one of several users who worked on improvingUlysses S. Grant. Remember, you do not need to work on an article on your own - as long as each person has completed significant work on the article during 2015, multiple competitors can claim the same article.
• Cwmhiraeth (submissions) tookDragonfly to Good Article for a 3x bonus - and if that wasn't enough, they also tookDamselfly there as well for a 2x bonus.
• LeftAire (submissions) worked upAlexander Hamilton to Good Article for the maximum bonus. Hamilton was one of the founding fathers of the United States and is alevel 4 vital article.

The points varied across groups, with the lowest score required to gain automatic qualification was 68 in Group A - meanwhile the second place score in Group H was 404, which would have been high enough to win all but one of the other Groups! As well as the top two of each group automatically going through to the third round, a minimum score of 55 was required for a wildcard competitor to go through. We had a three-way tie at 55 points and all three have qualified for the next round, in the spirit of fairness. The third round ends on June 28, with the top two in each group progressing automatically while the remaining 16 highest scorers across all four groups go through as wildcards. I saw your comment on another editor's talk page mentioning an interest in editing articles about physicists. I see from your user page you have a huge content contribution history and a lot of interest in military history, recently including the history of the Manhattan Project. In my youth I read a lot about the Manhattan Project and recently I have had a mind to update biographies on physicists who have won Nobel prizes. I have been gathering sources about some physicists, using resources available to me from the Wikipedia Library online database access program and from the huge public and academic libraries in my town. Which biographies do you think best deserve some updating? I'd be happy to work collaboratively with you on updating some articles about physicists. I've watchlisted a few of those for years, and I'm disappointed at how bad some Wikipedia articles on Nobel laureates still are, even though reliable sources about those persons are abundant. Hi! As part of improving the articles on the Manhattan Project, I want to bring the biographies of all the participants who won the Nobel Prize up to at least GA level. Most have been done, but three remain:Aage Bohr,Val Fitch andRichard Feynman. I am proposing that we work through them in this order. The first two should be relatively straightforward. Bohr's article looks okay, but lacks references. Assuming that it is not a copyvio, we should be able to fix it up by adding references and some more facts (such as his death). Fitch's article has references, but is very sparse. Some rewriting is required. Feynman has an article that is both discouragingly large and unreferenced. There is plenty of literature about him, but cleaning up the article will be a lot of work.Hawkeye7 (talk)21:24, 10 May 2015 (UTC)

I see you maintain a rapid tempo of updating articles. I was very busy in my off-wiki life in the last few days, and meanwhile books I requested from the library aboutRichard Feynman have arrived at my home office. I've read some of the those books before, and what I plan to do now is an off-wiki draft as if there had never been an article about Feynman here before, dipping into multiple sources in turn, so as to produce a coherent, NPOV, complete draft of a Feynman biography article in my user space. I'll send you that link as I begin the draft expansion, and at some point I'll say, "That's enough," and then let you do as you wish in terms of using any or none of the draft I produce to update the mainspace article. I'm doing this because I'm curious to see how your experienced editorial judgment is applied to my effort to produce a "fresh start" draft of an article that has long had low-grade edit warring. Whatever you do with the draft I produce will be informative for how to do some similar fresh start drafts for biography articles about other deceased scientists, something I've had in mind to do for a long time. I've broughtAage Bohr andVal Fitch up to GA standard. Then on a re-check I found two more Nobel Prize winners,Eugene Wigner andJames Franck. So I've been working on the former. For what it's worth, I think creating a new version of the article is a good idea. When you have blocks of text without references, it is hard to tell if there is a COPYVIO, so you wind up having to rephrase it. The effect is similar to a rewrite, and I've often thought it takes longer. In common with many scientist articles, most of the minor edit warring has been over stupid stuff like whether he was an atheist (and whether this counts as a religion) and whether he should be listed as being Jewish or not. Nothing likely to progress the article towards being coherent, NPOV or complete.

With an abundance of material, an FA article should be possible. I have three books on Feynman:

Murray Gell-Mann told people at a memorial service that Feynman "surrounded himself in a cloud of myth, and he spent a great deal of time and energy generating anecdotes about himself." (Geick, p. 11) The Gribbins' book is a good example of printing the myth. Feynman's own books have to be treated with great caution. The fact that there is also a play starring Alan Alda doesn't help.(SeeKennedy, J. Mehra's book is all about his science, and is packed with equations. Gleick comes somewhere in between. Thanks for your helpful comments on sources. I have most of the standard Feynman biographies (including the popular collections of anecdotes) at hand. One more library run tomorrow should gather up some general reference books about Nobel laureates in physics, for comparison of the various Nobel laureates. Hi Hawkeye, I've been mining the copies of the Army List at the Mitchell, inspired by your comment re. Garrett at the assessment request page. I'd earlier assumed that, like the Navy List, you'd only find current postings/seniority and so would have to go though scores of issues to build a complete picture but, lo and behold, there are historical entries, like an ArmyWho's Who! One thing though, when researching Pollard in the 1962 edition, I found a posting that made no sense to me and perhaps you can help: "GSO3 Trg and Gen Duties 2 DB" -- what was "2 DB"? The book kindly provides glossaries of abbreviations for honours and qualifications, but I couldn't find anything similar for units, branches, etc, so this one left me stumped...
