Bug in APersonBot

For some reason, I'm not considered a bot op in your table. Have you also considered updating every 30 minutes, or even 15 minutes?—cyberpowerChat:Online17:07, 4 August 2016 (UTC)

@Cyberpower678: I think he was checking if user is inWikipedia bot operators. --Edgars2007(talk/contribs)17:13, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
This is correct.Enterprisey (talk!(formerlyAPerson)17:17, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
In that case, I added myself, but have you still considered ramping up the frequency to every 15 minutes?—cyberpowerChat:Online17:30, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
I'm in that category now, but it still didn't acknowledge me. :/ Rather insulting. :p—cyberpowerChat:Limited Access18:21, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
Nevermind, all's good. :D—cyberpowerChat:Limited Access18:28, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
I have no solid reason why it's set to an hour... if you feel strongly about it, I can switch it.Enterprisey (talk!(formerlyAPerson)19:17, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
I personally prefer 15 minute intervals. It allows for the data to be up to date 4 times in an hour rather than once. Convenient when glancing on the table at a random time. :p—cyberpowerChat:Limited Access19:22, 4 August 2016 (UTC)

Possible AfD Statistics Tool bug

Hi Enterprisey, I noticed when looking atmy AfD stats that I'm marked as having !voted to keepTsonga Wikipedia (AfD), which is odd as I was its nominator and I didn't withdraw my nomination. So anyway, I thought I should bring it to your attention. Cheers,Graham (talk)02:53, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

Request regeneration of list?

Could you please redo the list that you generated atWikipedia:Help_desk/Archives/2016_February_12 of the values for the type field in the infobox fraternity? If possible I'd like more information, specifically the list of which pages had what rather than just combining the entries with their counts. Also, please let me know if this can be done in a tool that I'd like have access to including quarry, awb or a search query through insource. Since the list is long, if you could just drop that in a user subpage and let me know the name. Thank You.Naraht (talk)16:44, 10 August 2016 (UTC)

Goings-On

Hi there, sorry if I seem out of touch but do I understand there's now a bot that archives this every Sunday? If so it doesn't seem to have done it yet today, and I need to add a recently promoted FA to the new week... Tks/cheers,Ian Rose (talk)12:31, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

Ian Rose, sorry about that! Yeah, it seems like the bot died on around August 10, and I didn't notice until cyberpower678 left the "Bot stalled" message. I'll implement something that emails me whenever the bot fails to make an edit.Enterprisey (talk!(formerlyAPerson)18:17, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

Re:Your "NPPOverview" user space essay

Very late response (I've been absent for a few months), but sure, no problem. Out of curiosity, do you still remember which backlogged clean-up category it was in? That way, when I get around to editing that userspace essay again, I can avoid dumping it straight back into it.AddWittyNameHere (talk)19:04, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

It's related to{{Shortcut}}, which populatesCategory:Wikipedia shortcut box first parameter needs fixing. I was adding the parameter|category=no, which tells the template not to populate it for that page. Originally, it was supposed to populate it for redlinks, etc; however, the cleanup category needs burning down, and I plan to take out the category when it's done.Enterprisey (talk!(formerlyAPerson)20:01, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
Ah, okay. Yeah, categorization across so many parts of wikipedia is more than a bit of a mess, isn't it? I know a fair few categories that could do with some torching, myself, or that are suffering from a wee bit of overpopulation. (*cough*like certain moth-stub categories having counts around the 3000-4000 stubs*cough*)AddWittyNameHere (talk)20:32, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, more people on backlogs would really be good. A very long time ago, I tried making a tool for quickly going through some of the super gnome-y backlogs (i.e. ones that just require a template parameter change) - maybe I should revisit that again...Enterprisey (talk!(formerlyAPerson)20:49, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
Hm, yeah, and not even just on category backlogs, for that matter. All sorts of backlogs. Sounds like a good idea to revisit that, but if you end up not doing that, feel free to give me links&description of what needs to be done for a few template-parameter-change & similar obvious/easy backlogs that need help clearing and I'll see about fixing some of them. Well, when I'm not busy fixing the thousands of issues of WikiprojectBacklog and Stub Hell Lepidoptera. Sometimes, interrupting boring, repetitive work by doingother boring, repetitive work works almost as well as doing something not-boring, anyway. XDAddWittyNameHere (talk)21:09, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

Possible AfD Statistics Tool error

Hi — just a moment ago I found out about the AfD Statistics Tool and gave it a try. It seemed to mostly list the correct answers for me, but I noticed that for this AfD:Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Childhood Domestic Violence it lists my vote as "Keep" for some reason.Mr. Magoo (talk)11:26, 25 August 2016 (UTC)

There must be a malformed "Keep" vote that you replied to. I'll try and fix the code that parses votes to prevent this from happening in the future.Enterprisey (talk!(formerlyAPerson)04:58, 26 August 2016 (UTC)

A kitten for you! - afd stats tool[1]

Hi Enterprisey, first, thanks for looking after the afd tool, i use it heaps! now the plz help bit:)) i add afd lists to lots of afds in addition to adding "comments", "keeps", and "deletes", but sometimes the afd tool attributes a previous editor's "k" or "d" to me ie.Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jackson Owens, i tried adding a "clear all" (sorry i am not computer language literate at all, more a "try it and see"), but that doesn't seem to have worked, are you able to assist? thanks,

Backlog

The NPP backlog now stands at 13,158 total unreviewed pages.

Just to recap:

  • 13 July 2016: 7,000
  • 1 August 2016: 9,000
  • 7 August 2016: 10,472
  • 16 August 2016: 11,500
  • 28 August 2016: 13,158

You naturally don't have to feel obliged, but if there's anything you can do it would be most appreciated. I've spent 40 hours on it this week but it's only a drop in the ocean.--Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk)17:31, 28 August 2016 (UTC)

Bot issue

APersonBot seems to be making errors computing its summary ofWikipedia:Bot requests. It seems to be lumping all but the last two requests into the first one, producing only three entries in the table.Pppery(talk)18:20, 23 August 2016 (UTC)

Investigating; so far, I believe it's mwparserfromhell's fault.Enterprisey (talk!(formerlyAPerson)01:23, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
Found the issue.Pppery, for whatever reason, mwparserfromhell absolutely detests your signature and sobs uncontrollably whenever it's encountered. I guess the solution is either to "fix" (quotes because as far as I know, it isn't terribly broken) your signature or to patch mwparserfromhell itself.Enterprisey (talk!(formerlyAPerson)01:30, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
@Enterprisey: What is wrong with my signature, exactly. It doesn't seem to have anything strange in it other than a lot of HTML code.Pppery(talk)01:32, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
It's a known issue that mwparserfromhell doesn't deal well with wikicode that's nested in a complex way. Right now, I'm going through the parse tree so I can see what exactly it takes issue with.Enterprisey (talk!(formerlyAPerson)01:42, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
@Pppery: I see a problem (although it's probably not the cause of these difficulties): your sig uses two pairs of<big>...</big> tags, which goes againstWP:SIGAPP. --Redrose64 (talk)09:21, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
Implemented a quick and dirty fix; we'll see if it works in the next update.Enterprisey (talk!(formerlyAPerson)04:57, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
It seems to partially work - the bot is now only combining the first half or so entries into the first one, rather than all but three.Pppery(talk)15:34, 29 August 2016 (UTC)

APersonBot

Hi, there seems to be a problem withUser:APersonBot/BOTREQ status. Did the bot stop working?Jc86035 (talk •contribs)Use{{re|Jc86035}} to reply to me02:41, 1 September 2016 (UTC)

After some Labs investigation, it seems like the last time the bot tried to update the table, it ran into a bug and hung indefinitely, resulting in no further jobs being run for that task. This is incorrect behavior, obviously; I've cleared the setting that made it wait politely and killed the offending job.Enterprisey (talk!(formerlyAPerson)02:55, 1 September 2016 (UTC)

Commit history isn't clean

I don't use git often. How do Iit or prevent it from happening in the future? — JJMC89(T·C)22:23, 3 September 2016 (UTC)

That was a joke on my part. You don't have to do anything about it, because I can squash everything together into one commit from the GitHub web interface; however, other open-source projects are often much more particular about clean commit histories (Linux comes to mind). If you're interested, git rebase (particularly the-i option) is a tool often used to rewrite commit histories in this way.Enterprisey (talk!)22:34, 3 September 2016 (UTC)
I was using Github Desktop, which doesn't support rebase. Maybe I should switch to Git GUI or use the terminal. — JJMC89(T·C)23:26, 3 September 2016 (UTC)
I used to use GitHub Desktop - it's a bit slow for a few operations like committing and pulling, though. The terminal does tend to give a lot more flexibility, so if you're interested in that, you may want to learn how to use it.Enterprisey (talk!)03:16, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

Articles for creation BLD group notice

Hi Enterprisey, I've movedTemplate:Editnotices/Group/Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/BLD toTemplate:Editnotices/Page/Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Backlog elimination drives. The page at the previous location attempted to target a subgroup atWikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/BLD, which seems to have never been created or used. Currently, the editnotice now targetsWikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Backlog elimination drives, which was a reasonable guess on my part as to what the editnotice would be used for.

If you intend for the page to target a group of pages, let me know, but otherwise, the group notice had 0 visibility on the project, and shouldnot be moved back to its former name. Any questions, let me know. — Andy W. (talk ·ctb)20:12, 7 September 2016 (UTC)

Sounds like a good idea, thanks for moving it!Enterprisey (talk!)20:22, 7 September 2016 (UTC)

Someone's signature is screwing it up again. Remind me to yell at Sigma about mwparserfromhell when I get a chance. AFCRHS ideas

Here's a few ideas for your fineAFCRHS that may make reviewing atWikipedia:AFC/Redirects even easier. —Sam SailorTalk!09:43, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

Order of R templates

  • Why: avoid a lot of scrolling
  • Where: function afcHelper_redirect_onActionChange(id)
  • Suggestion: move the following up before label: 'Frequently used',
}, { label: 'None', selected: true, value: 'none'
I see it's Done, thanks. —Sam SailorTalk!06:45, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

Add R to related topic

  • Why: often used
  • Where: function afcHelper_redirect_onActionChange(id)
  • Suggestion: add before 'R to section'
}, { label: 'R to related topic', value: 'R to related topic'
I see it's Done, thanks. —Sam SailorTalk!06:45, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

TMR link

  • Why: good for situations where you want to double check on categorization
  • Where: function afcHelper_redirect_onActionChange(id)
  • Suggestion: next to the label "Template to append: " could you stick in a(Help) that opensWP:TMR in a new tab?
I see it's Done, and it works, thanks. —Sam SailorTalk!06:45, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

Google search

  • Why: verification of the requested title
  • Where: var $fromList = $('<ul>').appendTo($thisSubListElement); - I suppose
  • Suggestion: after "'From: ' + toarticle + " could you stick in a(Google) that opens a Google search on the suggested from.title, a bit like what User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/googleTitle.js does to an article title?
The(Google) link showed up, but it does not work. —Sam SailorTalk!06:45, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
A better place for the Google link would be after the first, indented and bulleted "From: " —Sam SailorTalk!06:12, 7 August 2016 (UTC)
A Google search result will show up asSearch Term -wikipedia.org". Would it be fixed by the below change? —Sam Sailor (Talk)20:50, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
Code

.append('From: ' + toarticle + ' (<small><a href=http://www.google.com/search?q=' + encodeURIComponent(toarticle) + '+-wikipedia.org">Google</a>' +

to

.append('From: ' + toarticle + ' (<small><a href=http://www.google.com/search?q=' + "encodeURIComponent(toarticle)" + '+-wikipedia.org>Google</a>' +
 FixedEnterprisey (talk!(formerlyAPerson)21:44, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
Thank youSam Sailor (Talk)22:12, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
Hi Enterprisey. But there is still the trailing straight quote after wikipedia.org (Diff of User:APersonBot/AFCRHS.js) and theSearch Term is not inside quote marks. Thanks, —SamSailor11:42, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
And fixed again. Thanks for noticing!Enterprisey (talk!(formerlyAPerson)05:01, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
But could you put theSearch Term inside straight quotes so as to combine whitespace-separated words into a single search term? —SamSailor23:01, 8 September 2016 (UTC)
 DoneEnterprisey (talk!)04:19, 9 September 2016 (UTC)

Something links here

  • Why: verification of the requested title - incoming links to a red-linked title often suggest it's plausible
  • Where: var $fromList = $('<ul>').appendTo($thisSubListElement); - I suppose
  • Suggestion: after the above(Google) link, a link like e.g.(Has incoming link(s)) to "Special:WhatLinksHere/ + toarticle" would be useful, a bit like what the script User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/deletionFinder.js does with the deletion log, only showing up if the query returns something.
I see it's Done, thanks. —Sam Sailor (Talk)20:52, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

Parse Reason and Source

Container category

Currently we have a request forCategory:Centrist parties in South America andCategory:Centrism in South America. The latter is aWikipedia:Container category. Would there be a way to, say, if you select Accept to a cat request, then you get a "Tick the box if this is acontainer category" followed by a box to tick off, and then{{Container category}} would be added to the category created? —Sam Sailor (Talk)22:12, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

Tried it inDiff of Wikipedia:Articles for creation/Redirects, butCategory:Test container kittycatty doesn't have the{{Container category}}.
What went wronghere? —SamSailor12:02, 22 August 2016 (UTC)

Redirect, othercomment

Here I wanted to append a msg not to requester, but to an admin who should re-salt the redirect. That's a rare situation, of course. Should we drop the automatically added dot/full stop? —SamSailor14:20, 22 August 2016 (UTC)

I looked at the code, and apparently there is no automatically-added full stop (unless, of course, I'm looking at the code funny). Maybe it's a template thing?Enterprisey (talk!)04:23, 9 September 2016 (UTC)
OK, but teach me, here
if (redirect.comment !== '') {                            acceptcomment += ': ' + redirect.comment + '. ';
isn't that a full stop being added when redirect.comment is defined? —SamSailor14:15, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
I wasn't even looking at that spot. Oops - I fixed that.Enterprisey (talk!)16:24, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. However slight the chance might be, I may end up acquiring a nanoscopic clue about js. ;) —SamSailor14:01, 11 September 2016 (UTC)

Redirect(s) totarget - new tab

Could you make the linked target in "Redirect(s) to <Target title>" open in a new tab? —SamSailor19:12, 5 September 2016 (UTC)

 DoneEnterprisey (talk!)04:22, 9 September 2016 (UTC)
Works for me, thanks. —SamSailor14:19, 10 September 2016 (UTC)

R to section

Here we have (Special:Permalink/738852669#Redirect request: Boogey Ball) a{{R to section}} request. If possible, upon choosing R to section in the "Template to append:" drop-down box, a new "Section name in target article:" box where you could enter

Boogey Ball

(or whatever the section name is), ending up with the redirect looking like

#REDIRECT [[Tiger Electronics#Boogey Ball]]{{Rcat shell|{{R to section}}}}

would be a nice feature. —SamSailor14:38, 11 September 2016 (UTC)

Hi Enterprisey. But there is still the trailing straight quote after wikipedia.org (Diff of User:APersonBot/AFCRHS.js) and theSearch Term is not inside quote marks. Thanks, —SamSailor11:42, 22 August 2016 (UTC)

Could the strings from the "Reason: " line and the "Source (if applicable): " line be parsed? Looking e.g. like this in the reviewing panel:

Container category

Currently we have a request forCategory:Centrist parties in South America andCategory:Centrism in South America. The latter is aWikipedia:Container category. Would there be a way to, say, if you select Accept to a cat request, then you get a "Tick the box if this is acontainer category" followed by a box to tick off, and then{{Container category}} would be added to the category created? —Sam Sailor (Talk)22:12, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

OK, but teach me, here
if (redirect.comment !== '') {                            acceptcomment += ': ' + redirect.comment + '. ';
isn't that a full stop being added when redirect.comment is defined? —SamSailor14:15, 10 September 2016 (UTC)

#REDIRECT [[Tiger Electronics#Boogey Ball]]{{Rcat shell|{{R to section}}}}

would be a nice feature. —SamSailor14:38, 11 September 2016 (UTC)

AFD Stat question about MERGE

Thanks for maintaining this tool, I use it a lot. I do have a question about the accounting of MERGE. MERGE is considered as NOT matching the result. I guess that makes some sense in theory, but from my recent experience it does seem to work that well.

For example,Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Hair_serum was closed as merge, but later an editor who attempted the merge decided there was no properly sourced info to actually merge to the target so instead did a REDIRECT (which would have been a match).

Another example isWikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Bahía_del_Duque also closed as MERGE, where the intent was to delete the article and just add the subject into a list. I think the result here is much closer to DELETE than to KEEP.

My concern here is that I nominated two articles for deletion, and they were for all practical purposes deleted although the discussions were closed as MERGE, and my stats show a higher percentage of non-matching votes that I think they should.

I don't know if this has been discussed before anywhere. And I'm not sure how often things like this happen with MERGE or if these two cases are an anomaly. But if this is prevalent, maybe MERGE should be considered like NO CONSENSUS (yellow) - because there is obviously no automated way to delve in deeper.MB15:58, 21 September 2016 (UTC)

MB, I've been in previous discussions about this, and quite a few people are in favor of reducing the weight the interface gives to correct/incorrect votes, as well as correctness percentages. That might be in the scope of a WT:AFD discussion. In your specific case, I have to say that the original list of which pairs of votes are compatible wasn't devised with much community input (I may be wrong, of course), so the list is always up for revision. Hope this helps, and thanks for pointing that out!Enterprisey (talk!)23:43, 21 September 2016 (UTC)

I like your idea

I like your idea about limitingDraft:Stubs for creation to be about generating lists ofWP:RS per topic. It makes the proposed project more focused, and provides a useful step betweenWP:RA andWP:AFC. --1Wiki8........................... (talk)07:16, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

Yeah. I also think generating only source lists would make the job of reviewing them easier, as reviewers only have to concentrate on the RS policy (and related ones), and more automatable (dead links? spam-blacklisted links? etc.)Enterprisey (talk!)16:50, 26 September 2016 (UTC)
Agreed. I renamed the proposal toDraft:Topics for creation, and started a discussion in thevillage pump to get some feedback. Cheers. --1Wiki8........................... (talk)18:22, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

Checking in on FACstats

Hi -- could you let me know if you have had any time to work onthis, or if you're planning to? I ask because I've been mulling over tracking these numbers manually, which would be a lot of work; of course I don't want to do that if there's a possibility that FACstats might happen in the next two or three months. Thanks --Mike Christie (talk -contribs -library)16:35, 27 August 2016 (UTC)

I've been a bit busy IRL, but I'm probably going to have some time over the long weekend to take a good look at this. And even if I don't get to it, it'll definitely happen in the next couple of months, and probably before then.Enterprisey (talk!)22:15, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
Mike Christie, I have a bit of the checklist done athttp://tools.wmflabs.org/apersonbot/facstats.Enterprisey (talk!)21:32, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
Nice to see! I tried it with Brianboulton and got a response that looks right; I tried it with me and got a Python error. I'll check the stats for Brian against my offline spreadsheet (I started capturing some stats and can use them to help QA the tool). Thanks for getting started on this!Mike Christie (talk -contribs -library)22:00, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
Alright, it's been fixed so that it works for you.Enterprisey (talk!)22:30, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
Next question is what are you using for a date range? I tried Nikkimaria and got 11 contributions, going back to 8/13; I tried Moisejp and got 11, going back to 4/10; Nikkimaria did quite a few more since 4/10 than just 11, so I assume you're cutting off at 11 max? I tried a few other regulars and got 11 for each of them, so I'm guessing that's right. If you put a date range in, I assume it will apply to the date of the edits? What if an editor contributes several edits to their review over the course of a couple of months? That definitely happens. Would they get counted more than once?Mike Christie (talk -contribs -library)01:21, 3 September 2016 (UTC)
I already remove duplicates from the list. At the moment, I have it hard coded to 50 Wikipedia namespace edits examined, but I can make it so that you specify how many reviews get listed (like AfD Stats) or that you specify a date range.Enterprisey (talk!)01:24, 3 September 2016 (UTC)
A date range would be perfect, particularly if in that case one doesn't need to enter a user name. That way you'd get a list of, e.g., everyone who did a review in August. I went back and had a look at the other requirements, and I think if you can add a date range, the tool will be very useful already. The main thing it would still need is the ability to exclude nominations, but for other reasons I may be keeping an offline list of nominations, so I could easily combine the two to eliminate those for now. Thank you!Mike Christie (talk -contribs -library)13:07, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
Hi -- pinging again as it's the end of the month and I'd really like to issue barnstars to the top reviewers for September. Is there any chance of a date range, and eliminating the user name entry? With those two changes it would be useful for the main purpose immediately; of course I'd love some of the other requested features but this would be a big help. Thanks.Mike Christie (talk -contribs -library)20:44, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
It's not hard to get data for a username plus a date range, but it's a bit of a technical challenge to support date range without username. I have some free time coming up this weekend, so I'm probably going to take a crack at it.Enterprisey (talk!)21:52, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
Well, if it's simpler, perhaps just a function to list all the usernames that contributed to a FAC review in the date range, without the count? I can then plug in the counts manually one by one. Though I'd guess that identifying the usernames is in fact the hard part, so that probably doesn't help much. Thanks for taking another look at this.Mike Christie (talk -contribs -library)21:18, 2 October 2016 (UTC)

Weird AFCH diff that destroyed an (admittedly incorrect) template call...

Seethis diff - for some reason it went and found a template call that was unrelated to anything, removed the template call, and...replaced it with "http://$3". I imagine this has something to do with finding thenth template after the references section, and replacing it with another template, but preserving its parameters. But clearly there are no safeguards :)

Just a note, I doubt this will be an issue in the future, but in case it was a sign of nastier problems on the horizon, I thought I would highlight it for you. --MarkTraceur (talk)14:40, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

WMF waiting for our NPP short list

Hi, It's now been three weeks since we created the NPP Work Group and we are hoping for a dynamic push forward for the urgent updates and required improvements to the quality control of new pages.

We now have the attention of the WMF and their development team has made page patrolling a top priority. They are already working hard to address some of the major issues.

The success of this depends on our team being able to keep the developers supplied with the feedback they need - if we relax on this they will move on.

If you have not already done so, please complete your list of10 preferenceshere as soon as possible from the list atTo do - the WMF is waiting for our shortlist. Please note that No.8 (NOINDEX) has already been addressed.

Thanks for all your help.MediaWiki message delivery (talk)03:29, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

Editing News #3—2016

Read this in another languageSubscription list for this multilingual newsletter

VisualEditor
Did you know?
Did you know that you can easily re-arrange columns and rows in the visual editor?
Screenshot showing a dropdown menu with options for editing the table structure

Select a cell in the column or row that you want to move. Click the arrow at the start of that row or column to open the dropdown menu (shown). Choose either "Move before" or "Move after" to move the column, or "Move above" or "Move below" to move the row.

You can read and help translatethe user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, theVisualEditor Team has mainly worked on a new wikitext editor. They have also released some small features and the new map editing tool. Their workboard is availablein Phabricator. You can find links to the list of work finished each week atmw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Theircurrent priorities are fixing bugs, releasing the 2017 wikitext editor as abeta feature, and improving language support.

Recent changes

  • You can now set text as small or big.[2]
  • Invisible templates have been shown as a puzzle icon. Now, the name of the invisible template is displayed next to the puzzle icon.[3] A similar feature will display the first part of hidden HTML comments.[4]
  • Categories are displayed at the bottom of each page. If you click on the categories, the dialog for editing categories will open.[5]
  • At many wikis, you can now addmaps to pages. Go to the Insert menu and choose the "Maps" item. The Discovery department is adding more features to this area, like geoshapes. You can read more at mediawiki.org.[6]
  • The "Save" button now says "Save page" when you create a page, and "Save changes" when you change an existing page.[7] In the future, the "Save page" button will say "Publish page". This will affect both the visual and wikitext editing systems. Moreinformation is available on Meta.
  • Image galleries now use a visual mode for editing. You can see thumbnails of the images, add new files, remove unwanted images, rearrange the images by dragging and dropping, and add captions for each image. Use the "Options" tab to set the gallery's display mode, image sizes, and add a title for the gallery.[8]

Future changes

The visual editor will be offered to all editors at the remaining 10"Phase 6" Wikipedias during the next month. The developers want to know whether typing in your language feels natural in the visual editor. Please post your comments and the language(s) that you tested atthe feedback thread on mediawiki.org. This will affect several languages, includingThai,Burmese andAramaic.

The team is working on a modern wikitext editor. The2017 wikitext editor will look like the visual editor and be able to use the citoid service and other modern tools. This new editing system may become available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices in October 2016. You can read about this project in ageneral status update on the Wikimedia mailing list.

Let's work together

  • If you aren't reading this in your preferred language, then please help us with translations! Subscribe to theTranslators mailing list orcontact us directly, so that we can notify you when the next issue is ready. Thank you!

Hi Enterprisey,

The future of NPP and AfC:

To take full advantage of the WMF developer time that has been allocated to this project, we must now quickly submit the short list of our priorities before the end of October, otherwise we may lose the attention of the WMF.
If you have not already done so, please visit the page atSuggested Improvements and select your personal choice of 10 features (excluding the ones the devs are already doing) and list them in your order of priority atPriorities.

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016-2017 GA Cup

WikiProject Good Articles's2016-2017 GA Cup

Greetings, all!

We would like to announce the start of the 4thGA Cup, a competition that seeks to encourage the reviewing ofGood article nominations! Thus far, there have been three GA Cups, which were successful in reaching our goals of significantly reducing the traditionally long queue at GAN, so we're doing it again. Currently, there are over 400 nominations listed. We hope that we can again make an impact this time.

The 4th GA Cup will begin onNovember 1, 2016. Four rounds are currently scheduled (which will bring the competition to a close on February 28, 2017), but this may change based on participant numbers. We may take a break in December for the holidays, depending on the results of a poll of our participants taken shortly after the competition begins. The sign-up and submissions process will remain the same, as will the scoring.

Sign-ups for the upcoming competition are currently open and will close on November 14, 2016. Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors, so sign-up now!

If you have any questions, take a look at theFAQ page and/or contact one of the judges.

APersonBot seems to be having problems

APersonBot has not updatedTemplate:Vandalism information since November 12, even though it has editedUser:APersonBot/BOTREQ status several times in the past few days.--My Chemistry romantic (talk)08:15, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Fixed. I pushed an update attempting to reduce the number of pointless edits it made to that defcon template, but I made a typo in a variable name which crashed the program every time it ran.Enterprisey (talk!)23:59, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

New Page Review needs your help

Hi Enterprisey,

As an AfC reviewer you're probably aware that a new user right has been created for patrolling new pages (you might even have been granted the right already, and admins have it automatically).

Since July there has been a very serious backlog atSpecial:NewPagesFeed of over 14,000 pages, by far the worst since 2011, and we need an all out drive to get this back down to just a few hundred that can be easily maintained in the future. Unlike AfC, these pages are already in mainspace, and the thought of what might be there is quite scary. There are also many good faith article creators who need a simple, gentle push to the Tea House or their pages converted to Draft rather than being deleted.

AlthoughNew Page Reviewing can occasionally be somewhat more challenging than AfC, the criteria for obtaining the right are roughly the same. The Page Curation tool is even easier to use than the Helper Script, so it's likely that most AfC reviewers already have more than enough knowledge for the task of New Page Review.

It is hoped that AfC reviewers will apply for this right atWP:PERM and lend a hand. You'll need to have read the page atWP:NPR andthe new tutorial.

AFD stats - is the tool down?

Is the tool down, or the system just slow in replicating? I contributed toAFD William A. Whiting about 15 hours ago, and nothing shows up using the AFD Stats tool.— Maile (talk)13:24, 17 November 2016 (UTC)

Nothing was listed at all, or the most recent AfD didn't show up? It looks fine right now, though. I recently found out aboutthis tool, which shows replication lag for all the Wikimedia projects (English Wikipedia is shard s1) and might be helpful in the future for diagnosing replication lag issues.Enterprisey (talk!)01:27, 18 November 2016 (UTC)

Query regarding the Afd Stats tool

Hello Enterprisey. I had a quick query regarding the Afd Stats tool. In myAFD Stats' summary, my !vote for the AfdWikipedia:Articles for deletion/Clinton Foundation-State Department controversy is shown asDelete, while I only re-listed the said Afd once. Why might this be so? I'm also pingingΣ on this. Irrespective of this query, thanks for the tool. It provides a brilliant summary.Lourdes13:57, 16 November 2016 (UTC)

Usually this type of error happens when something's wrong with the signature of the editor who voted "Delete" above you. This results in the script looking for the next signature - yours - and associating the "Delete" vote with that. Errors like this have been reported in the past, and I guess one way we could fix this for relists is to strip all relists out before doing any further processing.Enterprisey (talk!)23:03, 16 November 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. See you around.Lourdes02:39, 17 November 2016 (UTC)
  • One more small query: Hi Enterprisey, a super quick query again. I voted Keep in adiscussion but the Afd doesn't show up in my list of !votes in the tool. Might it be because I commented earlier in the Afd? Thanks for the time.Lourdes01:03, 25 November 2016 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer granted

Hello Enterprisey. Based on your experience, your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them aspatrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at theNew Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, youmust read the new tutorial atNew Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the variousdeletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread atpage reviewer talk.

  • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
  • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator.Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk)00:59, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

MusikAnimal, the initial version of myBOTREQ status tablewas written in Ruby. However, I ran into major session persistence problems and couldn't automate it on Labs, so I went with the traditional Pywikibot instead. Random AFC stats question

Heyo, I was wondering if you might happen to know of a page where it shows the AFC helpers and how long it's been since they've edited. For reference, I don'tthink it was toollabs but it definitely wasn't a standard Wikipedia page. 11:52:46, 19 December 2016 review of submission by ChalkyChalky

Thanks for the review, I understand your reasoning for requesting me to add this stub (perhaps) to the article on greenhouse gases. This content I feel is more related to the sociology of climate science rather than the hard science (as the greenhouse gas page is), and I anticipate it will be expanded on by the team of educators who work in this area. I think it is important to maintain the links to the science and would strive to add a section into the greenhouse gas page to link to this one. This metaphor is being spread as a way to understand the effect of CO2, and I feel that if people were to find it on wikipedia then they would be much more able to ground their information on this page than wading through the main article. If that make sense to you then please put the page up, if not I will try harder to convince you!

ThanksChalkyChalky (talk)11:52, 19 December 2016 (UTC)ChalkyChalky

ChalkyChalky, I understand what you're saying about the topic. I did some more research, but I couldn't find a lot of sources talking about the "heat-trapping blanket" metaphor specifically. It's really important that sources about a topic exist before making an article on it. (Looking at the sources on your submission right now, none specifically talk about this topic.) I see what you're going for, though; maybe if we could find enough sources for a "Metaphors for climate change" article or something, we could merge your content into there. What do you think?Enterprisey (talk!)19:55, 19 December 2016 (UTC)

Review of Dalewiehoff's draft: David Morris

Thanks for your advice on improving the content of the page regarding notability. I have added references and submitted the page for another review, but don't know whether or not you received it. I don't mean to rush you, but just want to know if I'm on the list. Thanks for all you've done to make Wikipedia so valuable.Dalewiehoff (talk)18:42, 19 December 2016 (UTC) Dalewiehoff 12-19-2016

Dalewiehoff, thanks for the submission! The main issue, and the one I indicated on the draft page, was that the sources on the draft don't show that Morris is notable. To do that, they have to provide significant coverage of Morris - so, for instance, if you cited a book written about him or a newspaper profile of him, he would probably be notable. It's very unlikely that the draft will be made an article if this issue isn't fixed, sincenotability is very important for evaluating drafts.
A side note: while your draft is in the "submitted" state (which it doesn't seem to be at the moment - maybe you didn't hit "Save page" after you hit "Resubmit"?), any reviewer can come along and review it. However, feel free to ask me any more questions you may have about the draft!Enterprisey (talk!)06:56, 22 December 2016 (UTC)

19:25:04, 19 December 2016 review of submission by Jfessler

Hi! Thank you for your constructive comments about the proposed wikipedia page on MIRT.I have edited the page to add a dozen links to places where the toolbox is cited. In most of those cases the author is referencing MIRT(often called "Fessler image reconstruction toolbox" - an old informal name people made up). Most of the new links are discussing but not actually using MIRT,so I hope that counts as stronger evidence of its notability.

In my view this toolbox is quite similar to "Octave" which is a general-purpose software toolthat has a very long wikipedia page. Octave is software that many people use and it is helpfulto have a wikipedia page about it. MIRT is not as famous as Octavebut still lots of people use it and have referred to it.

Can you please let me know whether the references added are sufficient,or do I need to add more? There are about 3000 google hits when I search for this toolboxso I could keep adding more but would that really improve the page? Thanks!

Jfessler, sorry about the sorta-late reply. A good number of the sources you added look pretty good, especially the book use. If you wrote up how MIRT was used in those papers, it would look a lot better - for now, I'm going to try and promote it soon. Thanks again for your work!Enterprisey (talk!)04:58, 2 January 2017 (UTC)

Quick question on wmflabs tools

Hi, I was looking through yourtools on wmflabs (quite useful, by the way!), and I was wondering about the criteria for determining the lists of users onthe recently active users tool. Does recent mean in the past 24 hours? Are there any other criteria? Thanks,Icebob99 (talk)15:32, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

Icebob99, thanks! I'm glad you find them useful. I only include users withover 10,000 edits, and "recent" means "appears onSpecial:RecentChanges". In practice, given the high rate of edits on this wiki, this means that users who appear on the list, with few exceptions, have edited within the past 10 minutes. The top few editors on the list usually have edited 5 seconds or less before the list was generated. Hope this helps explain it!Enterprisey (talk!)17:45, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
That makes sense, thanks for the explanation! Is there any way that you could put that on the tool page, so that others who have the same question as me could have it answered?Icebob99 (talk)17:47, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

Bot creation help.

I know that you are a busy wikipedian, but could you help me in my attempts to create a working bot? I would like it to welcome new users to wikipedia. I am fairly new to python, and I use OS X. Thank you.FriyMan (talk)21:02, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

I'll definitely help you make a bot, if you want one. I don't think a welcoming bot is the best idea, though;as you can see, it's one of those ideas that gets proposed periodically and always gets denied. There are still lots of things that bots can do.WP:BOTREQ has a list of tasks that people want bots to do; you can always find one and work on it. For writing the bot itself, you can seeWP:Creating a bot, which is a pretty long page with a tutorial. If you still have questions, feel free to ask!Enterprisey (talk!)21:16, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Archive minor edit.

Hello, I would like you to delete/suppress section 1.10 and 1.11 of this archive page because I don't like it and it is indexed:here15:57, 20 February 2017 (UTC)

Um...Riswa, why should what you don't like influence something that is apparently completely unrelated to you?Primefac (talk)16:14, 20 February 2017 (UTC)(talk page stalker)

HelloPrimefac, with all those errors it appears in the 1st page of a search engine and it links to my other accounts.00:43, 21 February 2017 (UTC)

You're only supposed to have one account anyway. I've blocked the all of your alternate accounts except for your most recent. Please don't create more.Primefac (talk)01:07, 21 February 2017 (UTC)

The future of NPP and AfC

Voting for coordinators has now begunHERE and will continue through/to 23:59 UTC Monday 06 March. The coordinators will do their best for for the advancement of the improvement of NPP and AfC and generally keep tracks on the development of those things. Coordinators have no additional or special user benefits, but they will be 'go to' people and will try to keep discussions in the right places. This very much involves this project too, especially with growing renewed interest around the site about whatWP:ACTRIAL was all about.

Please be sure to vote. Any registered, confirmed editor can vote. Nominations are now closed.

  • Arecent query shows that only 16% of administrators on the English Wikipedia have enabledtwo-factor authentication. If you haven't already enabled it please considerdoing so.
  • Cookie blocks should be deployed to the English Wikipedia soon. This will extend the currentautoblock system by setting a cookie for each block, which will then autoblock the user after they switch accounts under a new IP.
  • Abot will now automatically place a protection template on protected pages when admins forget to do so.

Discouraging contributor stalking

Hi Enterprisey. I would like to request an opt-out to yourrecently active tool. I've started to notice over the past few weeks that as soon as I'm making an edit, I'm getting pings on IRC. While yes, this could be because these people have a bot with RC setup, I think part of the cause is this tool as someone told me about the tool today. Just because I am seen editing onwiki, does not mean that I have the time or the energy to deal with the requests, especially when they relate to my functionary tools. When I get these pings, they tend to take an hour or two out of my day, and then people who see me respond to that will have their own requests that they found a few hours ago, but never raised.

The simple solution would be if people stopped being lazy and took things to the appropriate venue onwiki to handle, especially in any complicated tasks. But I understand I can't move mountains. I've requested that people take things onwiki, but people just seem to drop the matter as if they don't care and don't wish to do the leg work at all, instead of taking it onwiki. This then forces me to find time later to actually, look, give them what they need, in which they thank me for. I do this because otherwise it means a blocked user escapes, or someones personal information is posted online. Meanwhile this just increases my stress and to do list. --Amanda(aka DQ)06:21, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

Sunday March 26:Action=History Wiki-Hackathon @ Ace Hotel

Sunday March 26:Action=History Wiki-Hackathon @ Ace Hotel

On the last Sunday of every month, the Boardroom atAce Hotel New York hosts Action Equals History — a unique opportunity for New Yorkers to learn hands-on in a technology training/workshop session about the mechanics, practices and benefits of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. This is an opportunity for all to gather, share and work collectively towards a more robust account of history.

For this month, and following on the recentArt+Feminism campaign, we'll focus on building betteredit-a-thon tools for a variety of different thematic campaigns, and user-testing them with the community. Towards a goal of advancing these tools for wider use with diverse local groups.

Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk)05:14, 21 March 2017 (UTC)

AFD stats tool

Weird hiccup in here somewhere. Re AFD BKF, yesterday my Keep registered immediately on theAFD stats tool. Today, the AFD does not show at all when I run the tool for my name. But on a random check other editors contributions on that AFD do. Oddball stuff.— Maile (talk)12:16, 1 March 2017 (UTC)

Probably an error in the parser; I can look into it. I guess it isn't picking your vote up properly?Enterprisey (talk!)21:10, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
You are correct, it is not picking up my vote properly. Thanks.— Maile (talk)21:12, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
Well, if you ever have time to get around to this; historically speaking, it would be good to have this ivote on the record. It only involves the above (now closed) AFD nomination. I think it's something that happened when someone posted right beneath my ivote, because the tool picked it up and immediately on that other posting, it dropped my ivote. And I think it registered all the ivotes after mine. Maybe you could just look at the nomination template and see if there's any hidden coding that messed it up. Thanks.— Maile (talk)20:46, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, it's certainly a parsing issue, since thevote-history tool results pick up your vote. I'll try to copy-and-paste some code over soon :)Enterprisey (talk!)20:53, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
Sorry to bug you, but hope you don't forget this before some bot archives this right off your talk page.— Maile (talk)20:34, 21 March 2017 (UTC)
