5000 edits and one goes oddly

SeeUser_talk:Ronhjones#File:Google_Video_Player_window.png - as far as I can see all is OK, but the api call obviously failed. Can the api call to revdel the file be done to give a result? If so then we could skip the template removal.Ronhjones  (Talk)01:01, 18 July 2017 (UTC)

On the other hand, if it only affects one in every five thousand files, then it could maybe just be ignored. My bot just retags the file again, so it'll just delay the deletion by a week. --Stefan2 (talk)20:21, 18 July 2017 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: Not sure what you mean. Do you mean to check if the API result says the request failed to redo it? That might cause it to just be stuck in a never ending loop in case the API stops working (as happened during the server migration tests in which editing was disabled).Dat GuyTalkContribs18:31, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
I was thinking about skipping it until the next day (not loop until it works!). but asUser:Stefan2 - it is only an odd one, maybe we leave it alone for now and monitor the fails.Ronhjones  (Talk)18:54, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

Problems

  • Some pages show the errorLua error in mw.wikibase.entity.lua at line 34: The entity data must be a table obtained via mw.wikibase.getEntityObject. This problem happens on pages with aLua module that uses Wikidata. The developers are working on fixing the problem. You can fix a page by opening it for editing and then saving without changing anything.[6]
  • Wikidata and German Wikipedia could not be edited for an hour on 28 July. You can read why and how we could avoid it in the future in theincident report.

Changes later this week

  • Some wikis already have the larger and brighterOOjs UI edit page buttons. All remaining wikis except Commons will have these from 1 August.[7]
  • Thenew version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 1 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 2 August. It will be on all wikis from 3 August (calendar).

Your "compromised account" block

Hi DatGuy, thought I'd summarise here for interested parties about your recent block. Credible information suggested that your email account was recently compromised, which prompted me to place a block on this account as apreventative measure. It turns out that you have followed our account security best practices, which meant that your account remained secure during this incident. My block was entirely an over-reaction, so apologies for adding a line to your block log --There'sNoTime(to explain)21:45, 1 August 2017 (UTC)

Not a problem. Better safe than sorry. TL;DR to any talk page watchers: not logging out of email + random people = annoying email to people.Dat GuyTalkContribs21:50, 1 August 2017 (UTC)

Problems

  • You can get an email when a page on your watchlist was edited. You can choose not to get emails for minor edits. There is a bug that means that you then don't get an email when someone does a normal edit after a minor edit. The developers are working on fixing this. Until it has been fixed you can activate "Email me also for minor edits of pages and files" at the bottom of "User profile" in your preferences if you want to.[11]
  • The thanks button sometimes didn't work for mobile users. This was because of a new bug and has now been fixed.[12]

Changes later this week

  • Thenew version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 August. It will be on all wikis from 10 August (calendar).

Future changes

  • Editors and readers who still use Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP will not be able to use Wikipedia. Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP can't connect securely to the wikis. When we allow them to do so it means that we get less security for everyone else. If you use Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP you can installFirefox 52 ESR instead. Around 0.1% of the traffic to the Wikimedia wikis comes from Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP.[13]
  • Links to sections on Wikipedia don't work well in languages that don't use theLatin script. TheURL in the address bar in your browser shows Latin characters like.D0.A1.D1.81.D1.8B.D0.BB.D0.BA.D0.B8 instead of the section heading in the wiki's language. Links to sections in non-Latin scripts will be in the script of that wiki in the future. This will happen in the next few months.[14][15]
  • Wiki pages printed by the web browser "Print" function will have an updated style. This new style will be similar to the when you download a page as PDF. It will be better at showing tables, infoboxes and headings.[16][17]

  • Your watchlist can now have the option to unwatch pages. You have to turn this on in your preferences.[23]
  • If a table has several columns you can often choose which column you want to use to sort the table. This has not worked for some columns for readers who have used Firefox or Safari. This has now been fixed.[24]
  • TheRelatedArticles extension has shown related pages on Wikivoyages. You will now see the related pages at the end of the article together with an image. Previously the links were in the sidebar. Wikis that want this extension can request it onPhabricator.

Changes later this week

  • Videos will now be played in theWebM format in all browsers. Previously some browsers usedOgg Theora (.ogv). If you use Safari, Internet Explorer or Edge you may see slower playback speed at high resolutions. Instead we will get better quality and smaller file size. You can still upload video as Ogg files. They are automatically converted to WebM. This doesn't affect Ogg audio files.[25]

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello DatGuy/Archives/2017, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at16,991 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a a day.

Technology update:

  • Rentier has createda NPP browser in WMF Labs that allows you to search new unreviewed pages using keywords and categories.

General project update:

  • The Wikimedia Foundation Community Tech team is working with the community to implement theautoconfirmed article creation trial. The trial is currently set to start on 7 September 2017, pending final approval of the technical features.
  • Please remember to focus on the quality of review: correct tagging of articles and nottagbombing are important. Searching for potential copyright violations is also important, and it can be aided byEarwig's Copyvio Detector, which can be added to your toolbar for ease of use withthis user script.

Your draft article,Draft:Playing History

Hello, DatGuy. It has been over six months since you last edited theArticles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Playing History".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopediamainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions atthis link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

ANI regarding DatBot

(centralise discussion in section '#DatBot 6')

Information icon There is currently a discussion atWikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. The thread isDatBot not resizing Non-free images.jd22292(Jalen D. Folf) (talk)19:05, 26 August 2017 (UTC)

The discussion has closed as the bot is not causing any harm, but I would like to know what's going on with DatBot not resizing non-free images? I am aware that several users tried restarting the program in an attempt to get it going again, though there's still concern.jd22292(Jalen D. Folf) (talk)19:38, 26 August 2017 (UTC)
@Jd22292: I'm as keen as you to get this running again - There are 4421 files tagged for reduction. It was stopped after an issue, subsequently we found the issue was with a very bad file showing the wrong pixel size, and not the bot. I tried to re-start the bot (by putting "Run" in theUser:DatBot/NonFreeImageResizer/Run page), but it failed to restart, sadly DatGuy is rather busy and has not edited since 18:05, 18 August 2017. I'm sure he will kick it into life once he returns. I've resorted to to re-startingUser:Theo's_Little_Bot to do the resize - it started well and now it's slowed up (as it did in the past). Knowing that code, I would not be surprised if the problem there was due to the temp files (every image reduced leaves a copy of the reduced image behind in the bot directory) - eventually one runs out of server space, and getting in touch withUser:Theopolisme is not easy - he does not edit much now.Ronhjones  (Talk)16:30, 27 August 2017 (UTC)

Tech News: 2017-35

Latesttech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you.Translations are available.

Recent changes

  • Syntax highlighting is now a beta feature on Wikimedia wikis with text written from left to right. It will come to right-to-left wikis later. This beta feature is based onCodeMirror.[27][28]
  • You will nowget a notification when someone tries to log in to your account and fails. If they try from a device or IP address that have logged in to your account before you will be notified after five failed attempts. You can turn this off or choose to get an email notification in your preferences. You can also turn on to get an email when someone logs in to your account from a new device or IP address.[29]

Problems

  • Some pages show the errorLua error in mw.wikibase.entity.lua at line 34: The entity data must be a table obtained via mw.wikibase.getEntityObject. This problem happens on pages with aLua module that use Wikidata. This has now been fixed and no new pages will get this problem. You still need to fix pages that were broken before and still show the error message. You can see howon this page.[30]

Changes later this week

  • You can block users from sending you notifications.[31]
  • Thenew version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 August. It will be on all wikis from 31 August (calendar).

Meetings

Future changes

  • In the future you will haveglobal preferences. This means you could set something in your preferences to work in the same way on all wikis. You will not be forced to use global preferences. The developers are now asking if editors need exceptions. This is where you want to use global settings on almost all wikis, but have some wikis where you want it to work in a different way. If you want this you need to tell the developers now. You can do so onthe talk page.[32]
  • New filters for edit review is a beta feature to improve recent changes pages. It will work on watchlists from 5 September.[33]
  • The jQuery library will be upgraded to version 3 in September 2017. Wikis canask on Phabricator to get it early, so they can help find and solve problems now.

Late?

I ran intothis report, but it turns out the editor had already been blockedtwenty minutes before. Thanks,Drmies (talk)17:39, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

@Drmies: Well, since the bot does not have theabusefilter-view-private right (I believe that's the correct one?) then it can't use the API to find information about the filter hits. That's why it has to use the database, which occasionally has lag spikes, which can be seenhere. I might be able to get it to work if the RfC atWP:EFN is closed as a "yes".Dat GuyTalkContribs17:27, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

Pixelated downscaling by your bot

Seems as though we might want to fix the bot or something, as for some reason downscaled images produced by your bot tend to end up looking pixelated. Could you look into this?Blake Gripling (talk)13:36, 3 September 2017 (UTC)

@Blakegripling ph: DatGuy is away, is there any particular image you have seen? I could try a PhotoShop reduction. Reducing any image will always lower the resolution, some images reduce better than others. DatBotwas (out of action since 27th July), I believe, using Python Imaging Library (PIL) with the reduction type set to "antialias" - which should give the best reduction. When DatBot comes back it should be using the more updatedPillow module, but I'm using that manually and not noticed much difference.Ronhjones  (Talk)21:27, 4 September 2017 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello DatGuy/Archives/2017, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at14304 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a day.
  • Currently there are532 pages in the backlog that were created by non-autoconfirmed users beforeWP:ACTRIAL. The NPP project is undertaking a drive to clear these pages from the backlog before they hit the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing a few today!

Technology update:

  • The Wikimedia Foundation is currently working on creating a new filter forpage curation that will allow new page patrollers to filter by extended confirmed status. For more information see:T175225

General project update:

  • On 14 September 2017 the English Wikipedia beganthe autoconfirmed article creation trial. For a six month period, creation of articles in the mainspace of the English Wikipedia will be restricted to users withautoconfirmed status. New users who attempt article creation will now be redirected toa newly designed landing page.
  • Before clicking on a reference or external link while reviewing a page, please be careful that the site looks trustworthy. If you have a question about the safety of clicking on a link, it is better not to click on it.
  • To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go toWikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

DatBot reducing size

It looks to me like DatBot isnot reducing sizes. Is it shutoff at the moment?Elisfkc (talk)15:20, 20 September 2017 (UTC)

Reporting stale IPs

DatBot does it too much these days. DatBot should not report the following IPs toWP:AIV:
1) the IP has an overall history of less than 1 hour (edits and/or filter attempts)
AND
2) last IP action occurred >3 h ago.
This is a basic definition of a "stale IP", but the numbers 1 h and 3 h are just my spontaneous estimate, they could be amended. Thanks.Materialscientist (talk)04:59, 22 September 2017 (UTC)

DYK for São Tomé and Príncipe at the 2016 Summer Olympics

On25 September 2017,Did you know was updated with a fact from the articleSão Tomé and Príncipe at the 2016 Summer Olympics, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was... that acanoeist bore theSão Tomé and Príncipe flag at the opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics, but at the closing ceremony it was carried by an unnamed volunteer? The nomination discussion and review may be seen atTemplate:Did you know nominations/São Tomé and Príncipe at the 2016 Summer Olympics. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page(here's how,São Tomé and Príncipe at the 2016 Summer Olympics), and it may be added tothe statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on theDid you know talk page.
