Answers to your questions at the Simon Collins RfC

[edit]

In answer to your questions,Cool Hand Luke: 1 - It's a bad faith RfC because the originator never answered the questions I asked of him when attempting to discuss the edits (see the discussion directly above the RfC), and failed follow through with the 'D' portion ofWP:BRD. The RfC filer has been warned more than once and by more than one administrator in regard tohounding me; the RfC is a result of that hounding. In other words, there's more to it than meets the eye. 2 - We went back and forth on the content editing-wisebecause of there being more to it than meets the eye (in relation to the history of the other editor's hounding behavior). This is not the first time he has sought toWP:WIN against me in an RfC or content dispute (or an AfD, or in article talk page discussions, etc.). It's just a continuation of what he's been doing for weeks. Because of the warnings he received, I had hoped the RfC would be the last time I'd have to deal with him. Obviously, he is still stalking my edits by ending up here[1], so it would seem my hopes were in vain. I'm not sure if posting there would equate hounding, but technically, it might. --WV01:40, 29 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination ofHeccccchluuug

[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to readthe guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using theArticle Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed onHeccccchluuug, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done undersection G1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to have no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent. If the page you created was a test, please use thesandbox for any other experiments you would like to do.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you maycontest the nomination byvisiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line withWikipedia's policies and guidelines. —JFGtalk23:07, 12 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Extended confirmed protection

[edit]

Hello, Cool Hand Luke. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned"extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created followingthis community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016,a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification atWikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updatinga report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please reviewthe protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators'mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

[edit]

Hello,

Please note thatTOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on yourpreferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see thedeveloping help page for additional information.Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to thethread on the administrators' noticeboard.MediaWiki message delivery (talk)20:32, 12 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A new user right for New Page Patrollers

[edit]

Hi Cool Hand Luke.

A new user group,New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin atPERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are availablehere but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us atWT:NPR.(Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk)13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

[edit]

Information iconFollowing acommunity discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached toprovisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in more than one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to theWikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per there-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, that you have not been inactive for a three-year period of time, and that you have not been inactive from administrative tasks for a five year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three-year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement atWP:RFA. Further, following acommunity discussion in March of 2018, Administrators suspended for inactivity who have not had any logged administrative activity for five years will need to request reinstatement atWP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. — JJMC89bot00:05, 1 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Admins may now be required to undergo a freshRequest for Adminship (RfA) after losing control of their account.
What do I need to do?
Only to follow the instructions in this message.

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they arerequired to "have strong passwords andfollow appropriate personal security practices." We haveupdated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular,two-factor authentication remains anoptional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron1159821:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties ofUnited States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented onWikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Interview request

[edit]

Hello, Cool Hand Luke!

My name is Daniel, and I'm a senior at Harvard writing an undergraduate thesis on Wikipedia. One chapter of my thesis will center around Wikipedia's notability policy; I'm particularly curious about the inclusionism vs. deletionism debate that has played out among Wikipedia editors.

I see that you're listed among the earliest members of the Association of Deletionist Wikipedians, and you're one of the few that are still active today. If you see this message, would you mind if I sent you a few questions (via email or right on here) about your views on deletionism and how you approach the question of notability?

Thanks so much!

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an adminwill still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working onbetter tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you canread more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you cansubscribe tothe weekly technical newsletter.

We havetwo suggested ways this identity could work.We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You canlet us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement

[edit]

The administrator policy has been updated with newactivity requirements following a successfulRequest for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

LDS Fiction

[edit]

Hi! This is going to stretch your memory.

In your original version ofLDS fiction, you mention the scandal overRichard Paul Evans'sLast Promise. It's not in the current version of the article (probably because it was unsourced?) and I've been looking for more information but all I can find is evidence that it was controversial–not so much what the controversy was about. Do you happen to remember anything else? I'm trying to distinguish that controversy from a contemporary (but even harder to recover in 2022) scandal regarding anAnita Stansfield novel.

Pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

Information iconEstablishedpolicy provides for the removal of the administrative permissions of users who have made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period. Your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to the required activity level before the beginning of January 2023.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to engage with the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for re-engaging with the project are available atWikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to re-engage with the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request atthe bureaucrats' noticeboard.
