This is an automated message fromCorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents ofVulcan Society FDNY, and it appears to include material copied directly fromhttp://www.vulcansocietyfdny.org/History.html.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

If substantial content is duplicated and it is notpublic domain or available under a compatible license, it will be deleted. Draft ofList African-American professional organizations

[edit]

Hello,

Thank you for working on categorizing the organizational categories. I've worked mostly with women's groups but it's nice to see you taking up the fire fighting organizations.

One tip with categories, they don't usually contain actual information other than the articles in the category. Some contain a little header explaining what should go in the category but that's all. So you don't lose the work of your list I'm copying it here perWP:G6. (I was going to put in on your sandbox page but that's a redirect so I wasn't sure if you would get it.) Good luck.RevelationDirect (talk)15:03, 20 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Abbreviating political subdivisions

[edit]

Thanks for adding a relevant picture and caption toWindmill. I want to point you to English Wikipedia's style guide section:MOS:POSTABBR. Generally, using postal abbreviations—such as CA for California, or WA for Washington or Western Australia—is discouraged as they're less likely to be widely understood by ourglobal audience, or could be interpreted as two or more political subdivisions. Pantigo Windmill

[edit]

Hey, your new articlePantigo windmill (Easthampton, New York) popped up on my watchlist, i suppose it must have linked to something i created long ago.

It looks like it is a valid topic for an article, but I don't think it is a separately listed place on the National Register, because I think we have most of those covered already, at least in New York State. I don't see it mentioned inNational Register of Historic Places listings in East Hampton (town), New York. Is it included in thePantigo Road Historic District, perhaps? What is your evidence that it is NRHP listed? Perhaps it has an NRHP plaque on it, which a contributing building in an NRHP historic district can carry, without being separately listed. Or i worry if it is an alternate name for an NRHP-listed windmill already having an article.

I would like to help you get it described and connected in, properly. I mostly edit NRHP articles, myself. Either way, I am sure this can get sorted out eventually, and I thank you for contributing. Cheers, --Doncram (talk)23:26, 23 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, i see from the NRHP reference number that you provided in the article, which is for theEast Hampton Village District, that it must be a contributing resource in that district. Hmm, the East Hampton Village District article is pretty weak. Unfortunately the New York State copies of NRHP nomination documents were all moved, so I don't see how to read the NRHP document for the district. --Doncram (talk)23:30, 23 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
as I pointed out on your talk, it's in the backyard of HSH, next door is Mulford then Tuthill house is next to that and the church on the other side, the village green, the cemetery, the pond the old church, Gardiner mill, the rebuilt saltbox(not recognized, they tore down the orig saltbox) Rev Thomas James marker are all in the NRHP. I could use help with the NRHP infobox coordinates, i just lost the one inMulford FarmhouseCaptJayRuffins (talk)23:50, 23 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I got your note at my talk page, great. I am happy to "watchlist" here and have just a single discussion here, not split, but please do feel free to contact me at my Talk page, especially if I seem to have missed something here. Feel free also to joinwp:NRHP and, whether or not you join, to post at its Talk pagewt:NRHP.
Hmm, I am not sure they all need separate articles, perhaps they could be covered together in the village historic district article, each with a separate section? But if there is separate documentation available, as you have found to be the case for the windmill, it is also okay to have separate, split-out articles about the more major contributing resources in a district. It's a judgment call to split out or not.
Hmm, the HAER documentation which you included in the windmill article states "This is one of the mills built by Nathaniel Dominy V", contrary to the name you assert as builder, presumably based on a different source. It is okay if there exists contradictory sources, we just probably should note the disagreement. Oh, hmm the HAER documentation goes on in its text to say Samuel Schellinger was the builder. --Doncram (talk)00:09, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I think the name of the article should probably bePantigo Windmill. The parenthetical mention of town/village is not needed, assuming that there is no other place named "Pantigo Windmill". You could move it to that name, yourself, by selecting "move" from the tabs available at top of page (perhaps hidden under "More"). --Doncram (talk)23:55, 23 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I debated the naming, but after finding that every last one of these windmills were moved, it make sense to add the town. If you look at the list, every windmill deserves its own entry due to the importance to the community at some point in their lives. The village green can be expanded, but the museums all deserve their own articles. The village green article will have the poles, the stones, the seats, the arbors, the churches and the graves, but the windmills of the east end each get their story told. I just working on the ones in the NRHP first, the hayground was an outlier, googlemaps mis-directed me and it was a doozy to find, just getting google to fix that mess will take some doing. Gardiner Mill is incorrectly placed over in amagansett, where that mill burnt to the ground in 1924. It really is on James lane across from his grave.CaptJayRuffins (talk)00:20, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

New appropriation of landmarked village site

Here's the thing, I need help with the articles like the village green. The windmills is a start, see Category=Windmills in New York (state) and I plan to expand on the ones on the east end. but there is the problem of the underlying districts. I shot Quogue, now I have to write the Quogue Historical district article. But I'm still in windmills, and fleshing out the village. If I send pics, can you help? (talk) 00:30, 24 September 2018 (UTC)

Updated theEast Hampton Village District, will return to it later.. I think I can do the same with a stub like this for the Quogue Historical district, (not to tell the story in pictures, but to get a starting point for a full article... (talk) 01:30, 24 September 2018 (UTC)

In partial response:
  • About your having taken and/or being able to take more photos, that is hugely helpful. Please do upload those to Commons (commons.wikimedia.org), which holds photos that display in Wikipedia (in the English language wikipedia and all other language wikipedias, too). There is an "upload file" link to click which brings you tohere, and I see a "help" service mentioned there if you have any difficulty. If by "sending a photo to me" you mean literally emailing one to me, that wouldn't help directly, because I would not be able to upload it to Commons myself, not being able to assert copyright ownership myself.
  • Yes getting Google maps to fix anything sounds tedious. For coordinates corrections within Wikipedia, we can just do that directly. I often use coordinates that I obtain from Google maps satellite view, then right-click to see "what's here" in order to see a copy-paste-able set of coordinates, in order to get better coordinates to use in articles.
  • About categories, there isCategory:Mill museums in New York (state) as well asCategory:Windmills in New York (state) to add to some of these articles.
  • I am surprised there is not aList of windmills in New York or other explicit list-article to cover the historic windmills, both the ones having articles and those which do not (to be shown either as redlinks calling for articles, or to be shown as "blacklinks" not suggesting articles). To cover places like the one you mentioned being destroyed in 1924. A list-article can cover stuff which a category cannot. [Yay, there is such a list-article, "List of windmills in New York". By all means add to it, including adding multiple sentences to the notes column wherever needed to explain something adequately.--Doncram (talk)14:37, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Aside from naming convention issues and excessive and unnecessary categorization of the images, I can't see that much wrong with the article or images. I'm going to consider adding categories that Doncram suggested, if they haven't been added already. ---------User:DanTD (talk)19:24, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Assistant professors

[edit]

I must profess a little concern about creating articles on assistant professors. There are 2 to 6 million professors in the world, most of whom are of little note. The few articles on assistant profs that I have seen survive AfD are about people who were notable novelists, poets, musicians, artists, etcfirst, then obtained a position at a university.Abductive (reasoning)21:25, 5 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, the article is about a Social worker who speaks a (dead) language due to the genocide perpetrated on her people by colonizers. That she is involved in a renaissance of the language, and had achieved the highest level of education, a doctorate in anthropology, to be able to overcome the obstacles placed on her people, make me have to say, please,

Sure, sure, but that doesn't necessarily make a person notable. I'm just letting you know that in the absence of secondary sources, assistant professors are not notable, should you consider making another article on one.Abductive (reasoning)01:32, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I was thinking of creating a list of Guggenheim Fellows names as the recipents are automatically notable as per WP:NACADEMIC Criteria #2. Some, I'm sure, are very fine assistant professors...

Hello, CaptJayRuffins

Thank you for creatingCarl G. Holmes.

User:Doomsdayer520, while examining this page as a part of ourpage curation process, had the following comments:

Thank you for this new article, though I am concerned about the "Early life and career" section. That section is not about Mr. Holmes (he is not named in the paragraph) but is instead about all black firefighters of that time. Also, most of that section has no citations. It could be characterized asoriginal research which should be avoided at Wikipedia. I recommend revamping that section to make it more specific to Mr. Holmes and the challenges HE faced early in his career.

To reply, leave a comment here and prepend it with{{Re|Doomsdayer520}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with~~~~ .

Hi, I've done some cleanup onRenee V. H. Simons. You might findUser:Nick Moyes/Easier Referencing for Beginners helpful. Proposed deletion ofRed Hook Lane Arresick

[edit]
Notice

The articleRed Hook Lane Arresick has beenproposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Although this claims to be an article about "Red Hook Lane Arresick", a "revolutionary war burial ground in Red Hook, Brooklyn", about 80% or more if offtopic, and the only reference to the supposed burial ground is the assertion that he ground was discovered and used as the hook for a heritage trail. We learn, roughly, absolutely zero about the supposed burial ground. This does not look salvageable.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may bedeleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the{{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in youredit summary or onthe article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing{{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop theproposed deletion process, but otherdeletion processes exist. In particular, thespeedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, andarticles for deletion allows discussion to reachconsensus for deletion.Tagishsimon (talk)19:43, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe someone has told you about this in the past, but FYI there is an active non-profit based in NYC which holds regular events related to Wikipedia/Wikmedia projects:Wikimedia New York City. We have monthly events called WikiWednesdays which are open to the public. They typically involve a mix of presentations and discussions about various topics. It's very informal, and since last spring they've been online (like everything else). Information about this month's meeting is here, if you're interested:Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/April 2021. I have been blocked from editing after a list I created forTide mills of Long Island inadvertently on the last four entries introduced copy violations. There were about 30 entries formatted by a robot and many of the descriptions were from the wikis, which was then cited for non-attribution in the edit notes on each entry. I did miss the descriptions as needing rewrites - but question the level of condemnation that resulted over the lists creation. Like a John Oliver moment, the slamming of the red button and the 'WE'VE GOT YOU!!' as though someone has been waiting for just this error to have me pilloried for past indescretions that they had previously failed to convict me on, has me realizing that I have much built up resentment working against me with some admins. -- Following that, I pointed out that half of the flagged entries came from a public domain phamplet on the commons, begging the question, wtf? Every article I write within hours gets tagged with notes that never go away, even after cites are added for citation needed, ledes adjusted to clarify, and correction made to address the concerns. Did I step on some important parson on here by daring to write articles so I'd have a place to post pictures I took of NRHP sites? I have been rarely thanked for being a C class writer except by you and some others whom have helped me grow into an editor, so, help me out here. Whose got their panties in a knot over me? I don't have your tools and don't have any ax to grind, I do make mistakes but always seek to correct them. My eyesight is failing, I can't get around without a chair, my time grows near and I don't want to fight with anyone. I'm a Petrus Stuyvesant, 'the fight has gone out and he's retired to his bouwerie' -- should anyone ask, whatever happened to?CaptJayRuffins (talk)13:07, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have reviewed the violation and found the errors referenced to have been generated by my use of a code replication robot. The errors were let in as I used the <copy text> link to format the entry, which only showed a synopsis of the code that was generated, hence I did not catch or read the text portion in full. In creating 'Tide mills on LI' I had only tried to generate a list, and immediately was confounded by edits like these: <Tag: Disambiguation links added, orphan tag &{{Lead missing}} and{{More citations needed}} tags>, which I took to responding to by addingCite error:A<ref> tag is missing the closing</ref> (see thehelp page).
