Minor edits

[edit]

Please remember to mark your edits as minor if (and only if) they genuinely are minor edits (seeHelp:Minor edit). Marking a major change as a minor one is considered poor etiquette. The rule of thumb is that only an edit that consists solely of spelling corrections, formatting changes, or rearranging of text without modifying content should be flagged as a 'minor edit.' ISIS

[edit]

Just to let you know, I moved your new sentence in the Lead to the section "As Islamic State" as a better place for it, to keep the Lead as brief as possible and because "As Islamic State" summarises main events since ISIS became IS. The supporting footnote is a bare URL; could you convert it to the standard WP format using one of the templates on the edit page, please? --P123ct1 (talk)07:27, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. A couple of points. Could you do the date and names in the same format as the other footnotes in "References" in future, please? They have the author's surname first and the first name last. Your template may just have "author". Mine and other's have a box for surname and a box for first name and a + sign for second and third names. Can you let me know what yours has? I think it may be an old template (don't ask me how you get it!) and if so, I'll get the technical people to sort it out so that everyone gets the same one from the drop-down menu. Sounds like a small point, but I am forever correcting footnote formats! --P123ct1 (talk)12:13, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Supervolcano

[edit]

Hi Blaylockjam10. I'm Siyu Lai. A student from China. I saw you modify a lot on "Supervolcano", and I have a few comments. In Newhall's Volcanic explosivity index, there are no VEI-9, and MAX VEI is 8. Even VEI-9 exist, I don't think any volcanoes could be describe as VEI-9. Have you read the paper which written by Newhall and Self(dol: 10.1029/JC087iC02p01231)? Their max VEI is 8. OK, this not the point. My point is the definition of measurement of VEI, which is the volume. You defined the measurement of VEI is to use dense rock equivalent, but I think that measurement of VEI is to use bulk volume. For many examples, 1991 eruption of Pinatubo defined as VEI-6, but the DRE of Pinatubo eruption products are only 4.8-6km3(Wiesner et al. 2004); 0.64 Ma eruption of Yellowstone(Lava Creek tuff) defined as VEI-8, but the bulk volume of Lava Creek tuff is only 1000km3(DRE could be much lower)(by Christiansen); 1815 eruption of Tambora defined as VEI-7, but the DRE of Tambora eruption products are only 41km3(Kandlbauer and Sparks., 2014).— Precedingunsigned comment added bySiyu Lai (talkcontribs)04:18, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Siyu Lai: I was only doing maintenance edits & adding info from related supervolcano articles. I'm not an expert on supervolcanoes. I didn't do any definitions of how the VEI scale is measured & don't even know how the VEI scale is measured.Blaylockjam10 (talk)06:40, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

David L. Mills

[edit]

Hi there,I see the sentence that you are mentioning - I had read it in the context of the previous sentence. I'm reasonably sure the claim is incorrect, or at best misleading - here are two reasons:

1) I have a copy of "Computer Network Time Synchronisation - The Network Time Protocol" by Mills himself. In his bio inside the book it says: "Dr. David L. Mills is a professor of electrical and computer engineering and professor of computer and information sciences at the University of Dela-ware. He has been an active contributor for many years to Internet technology and in particular computer network time synchronization. He is the original developer of the Network Time Protocol and has authored more than 30 papers and technical reports on the subject, including the current operative standards documents. His Ph.D. degree in computer science was conferred by the University of Michigan in 1971. He is a member of the Association for Computer Machinery and the Institute of Electrical Engineering and is a Fellow of both societies." If he had been the creator of IPv4, this certainly would have mentioned it - it does mention that he was a contributor, but doesn't say "creator".

2) The draft standard for the Internet Protocol from 1978 mentioned is almost certainly IEN 41, which is available here:https://www.rfc-editor.org/ien/ien41.pdf - while many people are involved with the process, he is not mentioned as one of the main contributors, and his work is not cited at the end. He was certainly involved, via his work on the Fuzzball routers - if you scroll through the end of the presentation here, you can see how the Fuzzballs relate to the 1978 work (in Mills's own words).https://web.archive.org/web/20170202190237/http://nsfnet-legacy.org/archives/02--Beginnings.pdf - his work on the Fuzzballs is already mentioned in the article.
