Seeking guidance on a biographical entry for Allan Gerson

[edit]

Hi @Bearian -

I noticed that you contributed toMark Zaid's page, who worked closely with, in full disclosure, my father Allan Gerson (notAlan Gerson), who I have been trying to understand the best practice to contribute to the creation of his Wikipedia page. I am a newbie here, and have created a draft:Allan Gerson, with sources on his work fromThe New York Times,The Wall Street Journal,The Washington Post andNPR among other sources. Might you be willing to review the page, or point me in the right direction here?

Many thanks for all you do and a belated happy birthday!

Reinstate my profile

[edit]

Hello Bearian,

I'm very confused as to why my page has been deleted, and specifically regarding the 'unreliable sources' issue.

I believe the issue showed up because I went in last month to update some things, and maybe I did it incorrectly. For sure it was not my intention to go against the rules of Wikipedia. My Sincere Apology!

Also I am not clear as to exactly what show, project or statement I included that you specifically have issue with. Is it possible for you to let me know?

Please know that everything I had on my profile was 100% legit!

That being said...Is it possible for my profile to be undeleted/reactivated with the original information that was there when my profile went live in 2013, Less The HIV Information. I'm at a point in my life where I don't want that title/label to be a prominent acknowledgment as to who I am.

Your support would be greatly appreciated!

Thank You in advance!CarltonCarltonrising (talk)12:25, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Carltonrising, it's 2025, and you must be the last person on Earth who doesn't know that you can't just write or edit your own autobiography,Carlton Wilborn, on Wikipedia. Seriously, it's been policy for decades.Wikipedia is not a social media platform. It's run by a 501(c)(3) charity, called theWikimedia Foundation, which has very strict guidelines forced upon it by theInternal Revenue Service. In short, it's not just "rules of Wikipedia" but also Tax Law. There aresome news articles about you, but they are almost entirely based off of interviews, so we can't use them for evidence ofsignificant coverage. We can't keep out the "HIV information" because that would violate another policy:WP:NPOV. Finally, I no longer have the power to Re-create articles - I resigned as administrator 10 years ago. You can askExtraordinary Writ for a review. Best of luck and Happy New Year.Bearian (talk)00:35, 9 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Upcoming PROD for consulting firms

[edit]

Hi,

Towards the end of 2024, I was working on a project to clean up small financial institutions and investment firms. I would say most of it done now and there wasn't much pushback since many of these firms really were non-notable and it wasn't a coincidence most creators were SPA.

However it seems I have another PROD project coming up. I came across some consulting firm articles and the problem might be even worse than the previous project. I have seen multiple articles which were just blatant ads for them.

I'm letting you know in advance that there will be quite a few PROD articles coming up on your radar this or next week. I will only nominate a limited amount per day to make the workload more fair since its unreasonable to do everything in just 1-2 days. - ImcdcContact05:37, 12 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up. I feel I'm constantly trying to catch up with Prod and AfD.Bearian (talk)05:40, 12 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi.
Just to let you know. My project to clean up consulting firms is done now. Most of them were PROD without issue.

Wouldn't it be more beneficial...

[edit]

To actually convert any claimed reliable sources in an article to a reference rather than leaving as an external link? At least for one of them? Rather than just changing the tag template and doing nothing else? Particularly if you're going to have a stance in choosing to make that tag change that one of those ELs is actually a proper source to meet that criteria?

Since I noticed a couple you changed, such asTownsend & Wall, where the ELs are to not a brochure of any kind or any proof of a source and the other source is a dead link. OrErosion corrosion of copper water tubes, where the first EL goes to a 404 error page and the second is to "The Corrosionist", which appears to be an archived version of someone's personal website from 15 years ago.

Should either of those really have the no sources tag removed?SilverserenC06:56, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Query

[edit]

Hello, Bearian,

I was wondering if QuiteBearish is an alternate account of yours. It has recently become involved with reviewing PROD'd articles and PRODding ones themselves which is an activity that is only done by a handful of editors, including you. I only know of two very active accounts with Bear in their username so I thought this might be an alternate account of yours but they have no user page. If not, then it is a big coincidence that 2 of the probably 5 or 6 editors who currently spend any time reviewing PROD'd articles are "bears". If, for some reason, they are an impersonator, well, they certainly have no ill intentions! Thanks for all of the work that you do here.LizRead!Talk!21:42, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

No, absolutely not. My only alternative account ever has beenUser:Bearian'sBooties, which I only use when I'm connected to an unsafe network, and I haven't used it since July 29, 2013 in Albany. There is another "bear" account,Bearcat, but that isn't me, either. "Bear" a common nickname in the LGBTQ and neurodivergent communities.Bearian (talk)01:06, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'm quite familiar with Bearcat given his work with categories. So, I knew of the two of you and that Bear was a nickname it was just the overlap reviewing PRODs that I found unusual. Maybe I'll reach out and send him a message. I just wanted to check with you first.LizRead!Talk!01:51, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Liz,
I hope it's ok for me to jump into this conversation!
I have no connection with any of the previously mentioned users. For me, "Bear" is not a nickname but a part of my actual name. I have fleshed out my user page a bit to hopefully make it a bit more clear who I am.
I began looking into prods as it seemed an easy way to begin getting involved in the wiki editing process. I plan to continue contributing in other ways, as well, so hopefully I don't create too much work for you!QuiteBearish (talk)04:48, 24 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Conflict of interest reminder

[edit]

Hello@Bearian, I appreciate your collaboration on Wikipedia; However, I noticed you are in aconflict of interest. A conflict of interest is the incompatibility between Wikipedia's objectives of neutrality and reliability and the particular objectives of certain editors, individuals, entities, or companies of any type.

With all due respect, that's not how we define COI. I routinelydisclose even remote conflicts of interest. I've been editing for almost 18 years and I've always disclosed. I can edit even with POV. The İpek Ilıcak Kayaalp Page - Deletion

[edit]

Hi!

Thank you for your contribution on the discussion. I want to explain the situation and hear you point of view, as I believe I had not presented my ideas as I should when the petition went on. The person in question is one of the few female leaders of the country, and I put forward strong sources like Forbes, Capital and WEF. However, you message clearly stated that none of these sources mattered. I want to know why these sources are not reliable, as I do not know better publication and organizations when it comes to business people.

I also would love to know if there are sources that you can indicate as reliable, should I post them on a discussion page so that the deletion can be reconsidered?

Thank you in advance for your guidance and time

Sources

[edit]

HiBearian. Thanks for your comments at the deletion nomination for2024 Australian Jewish doxxing incident, where you noted many sources, and in particular Newsweek, should be removed from the article. I wanted to ask, now that the nomination has closed and the article has been kept (with its existing sources no less), is there any chance you could take a look at it and remove even a couple of the sources you consider to be unacceptable? The reason I ask instead of doing it myself is that in over 16 years of editing, this is the only actively contentious article I have edited. Now that one main contributor of the article has been topic banned (see this discussion), the only two major contributors are the creator and myself, and I've found being the sole person opposing how the article was original written to be quite stressful. There's no need to look at this, but in case you're interested this is what the article looked like when I first found it:[1]. I also genuinely think the article would benefit from me not being the only person making changes, as I am no expert in any part of this. While I do occasionally completely overall abandoned and neglected articles or even create new ones, day to day about I'm mostly aWikiGnome and am really out of my comfort zone here. I'm not asking you to become a regular editor or even to watch the article (though both would of course be appreciated), rather just to look at it once and decide to remove any sources that are inappropriate. I note you're currently under stress (as am I!) and also taking a Wikibreak, so I'll understand if you can't do this. There's no rush though. Nobody else (understandably) wants to touch the article so the problematic sources will almost certainly still be there once your break is finished. I hope you are having a nice day.Damien Linnane (talk)02:35, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Colegio Tomás Guaglén

[edit]

I noticed that youblanked this article and redirected it to the target articleRancagua. Unfortunately, the target article does not seem to mention the redirect title, so the redirect is likely to be deleted on that basis.

That would be essentially a backdoor deletion of the original Colegio Tomás Guaglén article. It would have been better to send it straight toWP:AFD, or just let theWP:PROD run its course.

I wanted to check with you before starting anWP:RFD. Did I miss something? Why did you create that redirect?Brianjd (talk)14:29, 16 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not right now on a secure WiFi, but here goes: Redirect > Deletion. I rolled back my edits, which places it back in prod. NotifyingBedivere. I am not in any position to do any substantial editing for a month.Bearian (talk)06:26, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of a group of Wikipedians to better understand their experiences! We are also looking to interview some survey respondents in more detail, and you will be eligible to receive a thank-you gift for the completion of an interview. The outcomes of this research will shape future work designed to improve on-wiki experiences.

We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in thissurvey, which shouldn’t take more than 2-3 minutes. You may view itsprivacy statement here. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Kind regards,Sam Walton (talk)16:35, 10 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Mass deletions?

[edit]

Hi Bearian, I saw your name pop up at some of the state and local Arts Council AfDs. The behavior of the editor, ロドリゲス恭子, who is performing mass deletions, often within minutes of one another seems really odd to me. Any thoughts on what might be going on?Netherzone (talk)13:31, 11 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

No idea. Libertarian? Censor? Obsessed? I agree that it's unusual – and that it's overwhelmingly the system. A couple of months ago a newbie started to nominate a whole bunch of Iran-Geo-stubs. Same idea.Bearian (talk)13:46, 11 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Heritage Foundation? They're stalking me.Bearian (talk)05:34, 15 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps, but my hunch is that they are disgruntled that some of their efforts were deleted in the past, and this is a reaction to that. I've seen that sort of behavior before. I don't think they understand how notability works on WP, however they are now tagging Arts Councils for "notability" without doing a search for sources to improve these articles.
Anyways, I wish they would clean up after themself. They withdrew their nominations, but did not follow process. None of the formerly AfD'd articles have the proper template on the talk pages, alerting other editors that there was a past AfD. I've asked them to do that, and they simply put a comment on the talk page ofTalk:Amador County Arts Council but not the proper template and have ignored the others. I was going to wait a few more days before sending another reminder.
I'm very sorry to hear you are being stalked. I read somewhere recently that there is a HF sock ring.[2]Netherzone (talk)14:43, 15 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Warning: Personal Bias

[edit]

Hello. Wikipedia prides itself on being a neutral platform. Your recent edit summary at Mark Zaid indicates political bias. You called the president’s administration a regime. It’s the current presidential administration. Please adhere to Wikipedia’s neutrality policies on your edits. Continued failure to adhere to Wikipedia policies could result in loss of your editing privileges.107.126.202.52 (talk)21:57, 14 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Warning: Personal Attacks

[edit]

Hello. please refrain personal attacks on talk pages and also refrain from failing to assume good faith. Both of these are against Wikipedia policies. If you have evidence that the person at 107.126.202.52 is affiliated with the New Yorker/heritage foundation and is in that position making edits in violation of Wikipedia policies, please open up an investigation at the administrators notice board. Otherwise, please refrain from personal attacks and assumptions of bad faith. Continued failure to adhere to Wikipedia policies may result in suspension of your editing privileges. You might be right that since you once were an administrator that you are in the good ole boys club and will face no accountability for your violations of policies. One thing also: I have no affiliation to the New Yorker or Heritage Foundation. But I recon you’ve already made up your mind on that.205.132.40.30 (talk)15:16, 15 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I wouldn't be so annoyed - except (1) the Heritage Foundation meat puppets have been harassing me and others for weeks, (2) I've taken multiple and repeated effortsto disclose every single possible remote conflict of interest and point of view in multiple locations from my main user page toWP:AfD and the talk pages of possibly contentious articles, and (3) unlike some people, I'm here to create an encyclopedia, which over 200 articles created, close to 90,000 edits, and hundreds of article rescues.Bearian (talk)22:32, 15 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
How do I get in on being a recipient of Heritage Foundation harassment? What articles are involved? I would love to waste their time trying to bother me. I find it super pathetic and hilarious on their part.SilverserenC22:47, 15 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

No, but seriously though, which articles are they complaining about?SilverserenC03:26, 16 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
ProbablyMark Zaid, but I don't know what sets off trolls. I merged/redirected a couple of articles recently. If you look atthe talk page, I disclosed that we've been acquainted for over 30 years: we were columnists for the student newspaper. Zaid was in the news recently for Trump yanking his security clearance. To reduce my stress IRL, I avoid editing in contentious areas, and mostly stick to AfD, Prod, and article assessment, but this is an old friend who's been maligned for no good reason.Bearian (talk)06:10, 16 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Perception limit & deletion

[edit]

Respectfully, I didn't find the repetition of your prod2 rationale very helpful, and it doesn't answer my concern. I understood what you wrote originally, andI am keen for the article to be deleted. But I don't think that PROD, which will only soft-delete the article, is sufficient, because it could be restored in the future on request, with all its attendant copyvios (and all the other problems too). Cheers,SunloungerFrog (talk)14:34, 25 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. No problem. Chill.Bearian (talk)23:17, 25 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Waterbed theory and other software articles

[edit]

Bearian -- thanks for getting that article properly referenced then saved.

There's been a Spanish IP tagging 10-20 software articles for proposed deletion some days. It's not malicious -- the articles are inadequately referenced. The problem is that 50 to 70% of the time, I can find at least a page in a book using Google Books or a paper using Google Scholar.

I'm hunting refs and adding them as fast as I can but I can't keep up with this person. I may spend 30 minutes (or more) on an article that IP spent 30 seconds tagging.

I'd like to communicate with the IP but theirOrange IP changes multiple times a day so there's no way to leave a message asking them to slow down and suggesting reference sources.

I've been tagging recently PROD'd article talk pages with relevant WikiProjects in hopes one of the projects will pay attention. I've also added {prodded} templates atWikiProject Deletion sorting/Software#Proposed deletions (WP:PROD). You can see the 14 that remain from 3/26 and 3/28 PRODS.

There are25 of these PRODs for 3/29 so far and the day's not over.

I'm sort of a deletionist but I hate to see salvageable content going out the door.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, --A. B.(talkcontribsglobal count)18:01, 29 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Deprodding? I'm not an expert in coding, although ironically, I've taught some as a substitute teacher.Bearian (talk)18:08, 29 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm deprodding the following, adding a tag as needed:
  1. Capacity optimization
  2. Java Telephony API
  3. KiXtart
  4. Microsoft Security Development Lifecycle
  5. Software Engineering 2004
  6. Teleogenesis
  7. Tester-driven development
The rest can be deleted. Proposing that many can clog the system. It's borderline vandalism.Bearian (talk)18:25, 29 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
More deprodding:
  1. Basis database
  2. DataMapper.
Bearian (talk)18:30, 29 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
And two more:
  1. Out-of-band agreement
  2. TOra.

AFD thoughts

[edit]

I see you chimed in atWikipedia:Articles for deletion/Michael Dorf (entrepreneur), which just got closed withdelete. Am I misreading it, or did only three people post under it - the original nominator, you, and a recent commenter who seemed to weakly suggest delete+merge content. As far as I can see none of the content was merged (don't know if it was any good as I don't think I ever saw the page), but even so, (and even though I may easily have agreed to delete the page) is such a low volume response to an AfD considered consensus these days? or did I miss something?Tduk (talk)21:52, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not getting involved becauseI have disclosed a potential conflict of interest, namely that I'm friends-of-friends with the subject. It's very common for only 3 to 6 editors to get involved with low-controversy topics. Again, I did not !vote either way. You are free to appeal the matter, but I've almost never used the system, and have forgotten how to do so. You are alsofree to merge the articles because anyone who is a confirmed editor can do it.Bearian (talk)22:11, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, no, I'm not particularly concerned with this instance, I'm just wondering if this is how it goes these days. Participation from 2 uninvolved users, one of whom was the nominator, doesn't seem like that strong of a consensus to me. Note that I can't merge them now because I only saw the AfD because the admin unlinked some articles I was watching which linked to this one. I don't think I ever saw the actual article, only the AfD. I'm not too bothered about this case, just worried if it's not the only one.Tduk (talk)22:14, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It seems to be rare. I avoid certain topics, sports being the biggest, where I don't get involved.Marcus Aurelius wrote something aboutnot needing an opinion on everything. As I said, it's rare to have only two uninvolved editors voting.Bearian (talk)22:22, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I would have made this comment on the AFD but it was closed early by a good-faith but new editor (for which Ireproached them on their talk page ... but I've checked and can't find anything atWP:OUTCOMES about BLP subjects requesting deletion. Did I miss something, or did you mean to link somewhere else? I'm curious for my own edification about the case you mentioned where Jimbo was involved.Graham87 (talk)01:57, 6 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Redirecting

[edit]

You generally aren't supposed to redirect specific people to topics where they aren't addressed. Most of your redirects made today addressing the requested list are fine, but I have concerns overSylvan Scolnick, because the article you redirected to doesn't mention him at all.PARAKANYAA (talk)16:28, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

He is really not notable, but if someone on the future looks for him, then they will find the general topic.Bearian (talk)16:33, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
But they won't find information on Scolnick, so the redirect is misleading.
Also, he is notable. There are entire book chapters about him[4][5][6]PARAKANYAA (talk)16:44, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Basem Abdo

[edit]

Hello, Bearian,

I think of you as a Pro both with Proposed deletions and also articles involving politics and politicians. An editor just tagged this candidate's article with a PROD tag and I wondered if I could ask you to review it to see if the tag deletion rationale is warranted. Thanks for any help you can offer.LizRead!Talk!02:22, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for reaching out,Liz. That's easy. "Deprod. Likely to be controversial. Please go to AfD." was my edit summary. Whether or not he won, using the Proposed Deletion method for an election is almost always controversial. Controversial topics like religion, politics, social class, and race should be discussed more openly. Prod has no nuances to debate or discuss, and is also a "backwater"
on Wikipedia. The appropriate forum isWP:AfD, where many of the most active Wikipedians debate publicly about nominations, and there are many options foralternatives to deletion.Bearian (talk)02:31, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Afd analysis

[edit]

Hello Bearian,Would you be interested in taking a look at an Afd ofPaul Alan Levy? I would be interested in your opinion. It seems to be stuck in no consensus at the moment and I would like something positive to come out of it, if at all possible. Thanks. 10:08, 13 May 2025 (UTC)

@Bearian: Thanks for popping in to look at that Afd. It confirmed my previous rationale.scope_creepTalk20:06, 14 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Long term plans

[edit]

I'm following up here because it's starting to get a bit tangential to improving the actual article, but17 years is a really long time. I would've been 5 back then.Clovermoss🍀(talk)14:18, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Lol. Now think about the architects of the great European Cathedrals.Bearian (talk)14:48, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's not that I find the idea of making such long term plans confusing but I'm limited by the nature of my relatively short life in comparison. There's very few things you can start that young. Editing Wikipedia at 16 is probably one of the few consistent long term projects I've had throughout the course of my life.I'm also kind of known formaking people feel old. I've never really been able to stand watching it because it makes my heart pound to try but I believe it's referenced somewhere in there.Clovermoss🍀(talk)14:56, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion ofFredrick Arthur Willius bibliography

[edit]

Hello there! I wanted to know if you might have some advice on how I can fix the problems with the page? I tried to engage with the initial person who suggested the deletion and the conversations kind of went in circles without me getting any substantive feedback. I've tried to look at as many bibliography pages as possible, but there doesn't seem to be much consensus on what constitutes a good one, and it also seems like luck of the draw when it comes to which ones get noticed and flagged. Any advice you can offer would be helpful, as currently the bibliography page is the only place on the internet where a near-comprehensive list of his work is available. Thanks in advance!Evansknight (talk)20:37, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You are invited to participate in The World Destubathon. It's currently planned for June 16-July 13, partly due to me having hayfever during that period and not wanting to run it throughout July or August in the hotter summer and will be run then unless multiple editors object. There is currently $3338 going into it, with $500 the top prize. As 250 countries and entities is too much to patrol, entries will be by user, but there is $500 going into prizes for editors covering the most countries. Sign up if interested! ♦Dr. Blofeld

Albany Alleycats

[edit]

Greetings! In your endorsement of my proposed deletion ofAlbany Alleycats, you wrote that the club "got some local news coverage in the late 1990s." Do you recall which local news sources covered the Alleycats, and if by any chance there's a way I could access those? It may be enough for me to base a simple but substantive enough prose on. —AFC Vixen 🦊21:06, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It was 30 years ago. It might have been in theAlbany Times-Union, which has a paywall, or Fox Channel 23 (fox23.com), which used to have the gayest staff of any TV station in Upstate NY.Bearian (talk)21:10, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Lady Mary Butler - sources?

[edit]

In January youstated that sources exist to show her notability, but didn't add any.

I've now added one source (as part of theWikipedia:WikiProject Unreferenced articles/Backlog drives/June 2025) which verifies her existence, marriage, etc, but not to the extent I'd think of as "notable".

Please provide your sources to show her notability. Thanks.PamD09:01, 9 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sources exist?Sambalut

[edit]

Hi there. In November you taggedSambalut indicating you found sufficient sources to establish its notability. I'm trying to add references for theWP:URA backlog drive but I can only find one valid (ish) source that even mentions it,a 1944 paper byJulius Brutzkus. Can you have another look and share what you found? Cheers.Turtlecrown (talk)12:29, 11 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

My process has been for older or obscure places is to go through Google books.
If I see lots of good sources, I'll source it immediately - although I've had folks say, "This is not significant coverage," which is why I don't just add once source, I'll add at least 3 or 5 sources.
If I see nothing at all, I'll propose it for deletion - but again, someone will find a single source from a census from 1851 and beat me over the head with it.
If I see a lot of passing mentions, or don't have time to work on some location immediately, then I'll tag it. Just now, I foundthis andthat and a few other snippets.
In the past few months, when I've tried either to source a location, or to delete it, I've gotten lots of pushback from both sides. Now I'm getting pushback from a third side that I didn't know existed. I shall no longer even waste the minute it took to look and tag that unsourced stub. Thank you for saving my time in the future.Bearian (talk)13:33, 11 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Now, if I did a drive-by categorizing like you did,Turtlecrown withUnion athlétique de Marseille, but didn't tag it or source it, I'd have 3 Wikipedians on my talk page in 48 hours complaining that I should have completed the job by sourcing it with 6 to 12 reliable sources or taking it toWP:AfD.Bearian (talk)15:18, 11 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Think maybe you read too much into the tone of the initial query. Think it was a sincere question posed in the spirit of finding and fixing. (We are all WikiProject URA after all.)Cielquiparle (talk)18:42, 11 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Then why question my process, as opposed to asking for solutions, and not replying when I do come back with solutions?Bearian (talk)18:44, 11 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
There's no reply because Turtlecrown hasn't edited Wikipedia from since you posted your first answer to the time of this post.starship.paint (talk /cont)02:30, 12 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
In my opinion, Turtlecrown has one of the best qualities you can have as an editor, which is kindness. (Seetheir contributions at the Talk page for WikiProject Unreferenced articles or search my Talk page archives.) If you read the original query carefully, Turtlecrown was only asking for additional links, which is totally fair IMO; the Internet we each see is different depending on geographical location, search engines, access to library databases, etc., and why duplicate effort if you might already know where you found the links? Not to mention the fact that we would each have different methodologies for research. If I were to ask you about your process, I would actually mean it in a respectful and collegial way, in the spirit of collaborative research, especially because I respect you as an editor who has written essays that I have learned from. (I even learned from your explaining your process step by step above.) Part of how you are contributing to Wikipedia is sharing what you know and helping us all become better editors.Cielquiparle (talk)04:53, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

PRODs for 6/14/25

[edit]

Hello, Bearian,

You have more experience evaluating PROD'd articles than just about any other editor I can think of so I wanted to ask you if you could look over some articles for tomorrow atUser:DumbBOT/ProdSummary. There are about a dozen that are tagged after a discussion on ANI and I'm not sure whether that is a sufficient rationale for a PROD so I wanted to ask you what you thought. Thank you, in advance, for spending a bit of time offering me your opinion.LizRead!Talk!22:09, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I'll try.Bearian (talk)00:05, 14 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Liz, I'm not an expert in anime, although I've read some, and I know nothing about soccer (football in the rest of the world), so I won't comment on those. The following are probably not notable (NN), except 2 as noted:
  1. Thom Rusnack - NN but I prefer to redirect musicians.
  2. JumpSoft - NN, failsWP:NCORP
  3. Márton Barton - NN, appearing on anIdol-type show isn't enough for notability.
  4. José Manuel Vargas - I seconded the prod.
  5. Koryo International College - NN, private junior colleges are uncommon in the United States but run of the mill in Japan.
  6. Mahakali Temple, Adiware - I seconded this prod.
  7. Benjamin Besa andChad Peralta - NN: sigh, poor kids. They're being eaten alive as their agents take a cut.
  8. Gulf Centre for Democratic Development,Salah Al Bandar, andAl Bandar report - all 3 NN - a walled garden meets a soapbox.
  9. CHAIN (industry standard) - self-indulgent and NN.
  10. Seneca Hawk - arguably notable, take to AfD.
  11. Holy Cross Convent High School, Thane - unclear, but someone is trying to rescue it.
  12. Clovelly Trails - I might have been past there. Probably NN.
  13. Hoakalei Resort - I seconded the Prod.Bearian (talk)00:33, 14 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Part 2 (I'm not familiar enough with Yazidi & Kurdish issues, or sprinters, or British gardens, so I'm not going to comment on those):
  1. Providence Ferry, Georgia - NN development.
  2. Crestmont Farms, Philadelphia - developed almost 100 years ago, so arguably historically notable.
  3. Wristpack - I seconded this, even though I own one. Lol.
  4. Meble-Rys Gościbia Sułkowice - I seconded this Prod.
  5. Sonny (musician) - can't decide.
  6. Aftermath of World War II in Bavaria - I seconded the nomination although I mess up the edit summary.
  7. Fredrick Bundala - unclear.
  8. Norm Houghton (pioneer irrigator) - NN.
  9. Geeky Nigeria - NN.
  10. Euripides Pants - redirect toMinistry (band).
  11. Northern Colorado Writers Workshop - maybe notable.
  12. Kościuszkowców Street, Warsaw - probably notable; there's a better Polish language article.
  13. International PuntaClassic Festival - NN, but again, I prefer to redirect Music articles if at all possible.
  14. Umar ibn Umar - I prodded this. Again, messed up the edit summary, but it's clearly NN.
  15. Ural Striped-maned pigeon I prodded this as NN.
  16. Untitled Meet the Parents film - NN, seeWikipedia:TenPoundHammer's Law.
  17. C.C. Lambert Elementary School - defunct and NN: redirect to the school district.
  18. Postaw na milion - I don't know.
  19. Value of control - I prodded this asWP:TNT.
  20. Vessels of Polish Riverine Flotilla - I prodded this as NN.
  21. Cason Cooley - redirect toThe Normals (Christian band).
  22. Øksnevad Secondary School - redirect toRogaland.
  23. Archaruniq - I prodded this as NN.
  24. House of Argavieso - I prodded this as NN.
  25. Journal of the Indian Academy of Wood Science - Deprodded, probably notable. See recent expansion.
  26. Ajay Bahadur Singh - NN.
  27. A-Sides, B-Sides & Suicides - NN, but redirect toCharon (band).
  28. Olga Poliektova andTatiana Poliektova - both NN. Producers are almost always NN.
  29. Euan McLeod - seconded as NN local politician.
  30. Ukrainian Male Chorus of Edmonton - NN, but I'd prefer to redirect.
  31. The Flying Saucers - possibly notable, take to AfD.
  32. Michael Moody - I proposed a merger as ATD.
  33. Ray Johnson and the Bystanders - you would think that sources exist, but I found nothing on Google newspapers.
  34. Virtual legacy wires - redirect toIntel QuickPath Interconnect. I'm going ahead and being bold.
  35. Nat Mor andKindred Spirits (music) - NN, nowhere to redirect.
  36. Rohilla Chieftaincies - NN.
  37. Nelson Ascencio - arguably notable; should be at WP:AfD.
  38. Askaules,Kabul Conspiracy andBanna Avenue - I seconded these as NN.
Note: I don't get involved in disputes over dab pages. I also won't comment on subjects who are possibly friends of friends, such asSharron McClellan.Bearian (talk)01:34, 14 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oh, my goodness gracious, Bearian, I wasn't asking you to go through the entire PROD list, just the ones that refered to that ANI discussion. Those PRODs only offered the ANI discussion as a basis for deleting the articles. I knew of the ANI discussion but I wasn't sure that this was a sufficient rationale to delete an article. You went to a lot more work than I was expecting. But a) I hope you de-PROD'd the articles you thought were notable and b) I'll review your list when I look them over tomorrow. Sometimes Clam or GB Fan helps with PROD deletion but it's mostly just Explicit and myself who work through the daily list and this list will have my attention.
Thanks so much for taking all of this time to review these tagged articles. It's very much appreciated.LizRead!Talk!09:44, 14 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

De-PRODs

[edit]

Hello, Bearian,

I don't know if you noticed, but yesterday there was an IP account,User:75.104.64.169, who went around and de-PROD'd almost two dozen PROD'd articles. We seem to be doing a lot more PRODs over the past two weeks so the system wasn't greatly affected by these actions but one or more of the articles you PROD'd were de-PROD'd so I thought I'd tell you in case you wanted to bring it toWP:AFD. I'm surprised we don't run into this phenomena more often because some editors object to PRODs on principle (a "no discussion deletion") but it's actually pretty rare that we have mass de-PRODding, especially ones that don't affect athletes who still take up the bulk of our PROD'd articles.

Hope all is well. And, you might consider removing the message from the top of this page from summer 2024 unless the message is still valid. Take care.LizRead!Talk!20:15, 3 July 2025 (UTC)'[reply]

I also think you'd make a great admin but that's for selfish reasons as we need the help! But I can't pretend it's not stressful. Hello, you have recently added a COI tag toMaimul Ahsan Khan. I'm reaching out because I am the only major editor of that page, under different (abandoned) usernames and perhaps IP addresses, including the account that originally created the page, which I abandoned long ago. Admittedly, I have made edits from IPs due to my premature announcements of retirement from Wikipedia, something I've acknowledged on a few of the pages. Anyway, Maimul Ahsan Khan was my direct teacher at the university I attended. Does that constitute a COI? Maybe. But I don't really believe it should in this case. It's true that I created his page out of a kind of affection one might have for a mentor, but that phase is long behind me. Also note, I was not in a position to make a declaration due to his so-called "Islamist affiliation", which was sensitive for the past regime. He has long been quite irrelevant to me. I neither share his views nor hold him in any special regard, intellectually speaking. In fact, I do not make contributions relating to his field. But the fact remains that I know him. He is one of two Bangladeshi people with whom I have ever engaged on Wikipedia. The other being an Islamic scholar, my field of contribution. So why did I edit his page from a different account or IP in the past? Simply because I believed no one else would, after a page was created. However, given the dramatic shifts in the political scene of my country, I now feel I can edit his page openly. I’d like to know your thoughts. I would be happy to address the neutrality concerns myself. Do I have to declare my coi? What are the specific issues with the page? Just hanging a tag is no solution. We have to address the issue. Thanks.M. A. Sayem (talk)23:56, 9 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You get no sympathy from me. I place tags on articles' talk pages – and I don't vote atWP:AfD if I'm even friends of friends with the subject. I joke about Manhattan being the smallest village in the world, because everyone knows everyone else. Yes, you must declare your COI. SeeWP:DCOI.Bearian (talk)02:17, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I understand. But you have to start somewhere. This was the first article I created on Wikipedia back in 2016 when I was barely familiar with Wikipedia policies and guidelines. I started editing again more than three years later, with this account after maybe losing one or two accounts in the way. I settled with this one. And finally made some humble contributions in fields entirely unrelated to what I was thinking in 2016. While I agree with you on policy issues, I think there is more to the story. Nevertheless, coi stands, and I have to declare it. Shall I remove the tag, declaring the coi in the talk page? I think the page is written in a fairly neutral language. Correct me if I am wrong.M. A. Sayem (talk)03:27, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I invite you to take a look at the page now, as I have recently edited it to address the neutrality issue, disclosing coi in edit summaries. Thanks.M. A. Sayem (talk)05:04, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

AI risks

[edit]

It would be helpful if you could document some the issues you've mentioned at the recentĆaci u školu AFD atWP:AI, as it currently doesn't seem to say much about risks to charity status or insurance. --Joy (talk)12:09, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

No,Joy, I think you misunderstand the gravity and complexity of the situation. The fact that we haveundisclosed conflicts of interest is a danger to our501(c)(3) status. That is aone of my biggest concerns. The richest person in the world is actively trying to take away our charitable status; members having aconflict of interest is a legal reason to take away our charitable rights, such as tax deductions for donors (such asCraig Newmark) and not having to pay taxes (such as Federalincome tax or statesales tax). The loss of our charitable contributions and having to pay tax on every transaction would bankrupt the Wikimedia Foundation. Using AI inviolation of copyright laws is another reason for this regime to yank away our privileges. As long as weproperly document any COI, that "cures" the problem, pingingM. A. Sayem. The fact that AI creates copyright violations, there is as of yet no fix. Everybody is in danger of accidentally committing a Federal crime when they use AI carelessly; there's no exceptions, no exclusions, no safe harbor. It's a total myth that there's ade minimus exception to violating Federalcopyright law; it's just not enforced. That's also why it's been crucial thatwe make a strong effort to reduce our backlog of 75,000 unsourced articles as of 11/22/24 to under 49,000 in the past few months, pingingCielquiparle. Every unsourced article is potentially a copyright infringement. At least, if we make an effort, we can throw ourselves at the mercy of the courts. Beyond criminal prosecution, no insurance company would provide us withdirectors and officers liability insurance without disclosing all COIs. A regime that wants to enforce strictly selective laws against persons, without regardto intent and withoutdue process, has tremendous power. Do you understand now?Bearian (talk)21:51, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Very insightful.M. A. Sayem (talk)22:44, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Upstate New York Edits

[edit]

Dear Bearian,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your comment. The article, as it existed, was already controversial; the specific definition of Upstate New York is highly subjective and not based on official documentation. As per the New York State legal categorization, the state is subdivided into smaller areas than the ‘upstate’ region doesn’t technically exist outside of informal language.

I edited the article to reflect that the vast majority of people from the Buffalo/Rochester metropolitan area do not consider themselves to be part of upstate New York. While many New Yorkers from the finger lakes or capital region consider those smaller categories to be subdivisions of ‘upstate,’ Buffalonians unilaterally reject the label of ‘upstate’ as erroneous and reductive. Literally speaking, Buffalo is not in the northern part of the state, and is not ‘up’ from the capital where these distinctions should be defined.

It is my belief that when attempting to ‘categorize’ others, it is best to take your cues from the people you are discussing rather than attempting to force an outside definition on people. This is a mark of respect. Since the people of Buffalo and Rochester do not consider themselves a part of ‘upstate’ New York, there is no reason for Wikipedia to depict them as such, especially when the definition of the area is already loose.

Sincerely,Ryharr123 (talk)12:19, 14 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I lived in Upstate New York, by every definition, from 1982 through December 31, 2014, except for summer internships. I taught atBryant & Stratton College, which was headquartered in a suburb of Buffalo, from 1996 through 2015. I understand it's controversial, but also that people from Western NY even disagree. For any article that is controversial, one should be careful about what youremove, and take the specific issue to the talk page first.Bearian (talk)15:10, 14 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment of a new article?

[edit]

Hi Bearian, I’ve noticed that you’ve been doing assessments of law-related articles. I’m currently working on a new article about a mid-Victorian lawyer. When it’s done, would you be willing to assess it? I don’t understand the assessment process, and in any event I think it should always be someone other than the main editor on an article who does the assessment.Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk)21:18, 14 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Railway station stubs

[edit]

I spent a good deal of time yesterday identifying sources forBayerisch Eisenstein railway station andOberottendorf railway station, and also redirecting a few Stadtbahn stubs in the Cologne/Berlin area that were going to be hard to source in any reasonable way. I was also thinking about how to implement some automated reports to help manage the issue. This is a collaborative project and we all have our own priorities. My focus is elsewhere at the moment, but if someone brings a problem to my attention I'll look into it. This morning I saw your edit summary when you proddedSpinning Wheels station:Special:Diff/1305096524 (the editor who unprodded it is not a TWP regular). There are many observations I could make here, but I'll just leave it at this: I feel the enthusiasm I had for dealing with the issue yesterday ebbing away. I'm sorry you said that, and I'm sorry that I saw it.Mackensen(talk)12:24, 10 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Patrol of a PRODed article

[edit]
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section.A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
I'm no longer patrolling new pages in the foreseeable future.

I noticed thatyou marked as patrolled the articleAl Azaiba Airport after ithad received an endorsed PROD notice. Can you explain why you patrolled it? Do you endorse the article, and if so, did you intend to remove the PROD notices?Dan Leonard (talk •contribs)15:21, 18 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

A patrol is not an endorsement either way. It is what it is. If you don't want me to patrol any more, then I won't. I'm very busy right now with several other projects. Thank you for your interest.Bearian (talk)15:25, 18 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm just puzzled as the patrolling instructions state at§ What not to mark as patrollednot to patrol articles with CSD or PROD notices, as (per§ Should we stop marking articles tagged with CSD and PROD as 'reviewed' now that we can filter them in the NewPagesFeed?) if the notice is improperly removed then it falls off the New Pages Feed into indexed mainspace. Thus, if the author removes the PROD notice you'll be the one to endorse the article's existence. Question about structuring a possible draft

[edit]

HelloBearian,

I noticed in the AfD forWikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ali Nasser Abulaban that you suggested a possible move or recreation under the titleKilling of Ana Abulaban. I am considering attempting such a draft, though AfC submission. From what I understand, it would be most appropriate to focus the article on the crime itself and the subsequent media/documentary coverage, rather than on a biography of the perpetrator.

As I am still, relatively speaking, a rather newer editor, and actively learning Wikipedia’s policies and practices, I would greatly appreciate any guidance you might have on how best to structure such an article. Should it be written in a format similar to otherWikipedia:Good articles such asMurder of Deborah Linsley,Murder of Alesha MacPhail,Murder of Keith Blakelock,Murder of Dora Bloch, orMurder of Bella Bond?

Any advice, resources, or suggestions you could offer would be most helpful.

Thank you kindly,Issac I Navarro (talk)17:49, 19 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'm busy in real life, and can't focus on such an emotional thing right now. I would aim for a C- or B-Class rather than a GA. In any case, let's follow up next week,Issac I Navarro.Bearian (talk)17:58, 19 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks and confessing ignorance

[edit]

I'm glad you brought those Middle Eastern Christian leader PRODs before a larger set of eyes; that subject area, in contrast to the somewhat similar Indian Christianity sphere, is severely understaffed. You made mention of "deleting an article about a Christian leader would only feed our critics" in light of recent controversies. Perhaps I am out of the loop, but I am not sure what controversies we may be embroiled in that may draw additional scrutiny to that corner of the project and would love to assist if there's something that needs a community response on-project.

Regarding the articles I looked at, the WikiProjects for Christianity and Catholicism have essentially established the same standard for notability among Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Oriental Orthodox bishops that US state legislators have: veracity of existence is sufficient. That standard might actually warrant some outside scrutiny sometime just to ensure it holds water, but that's approximately where that portion of the editing community sits on that matter. Don't hesitate to ask for my help if something is needed. Thanks for your great work! Best, ~Pbritti (talk)19:36, 21 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There are two essays on this; mine is atUser:Bearian/Portfolio#My Big 4 Concerns of 2025 and another one is atWP:NABOB. Basically, "Christian" politicians want to revoke our charitable status. This would reduce our revenue from donations, and make us subject to a variety of taxes that we don't have to pay as of now. It would also further "chill" free speech in the United States, since almost every student uses us as a starting point for research, and the Regime would telegraph its displeasure with us. Editing Wikipedia is not a crime – yet.Bearian (talk)19:43, 21 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, yeah, there is reason to be concerned there. While one hopes that good-faith janitorial actions on marginal 19th-century Chaldeans won't raise anybody's ire too much, you never know. You're absolutely right that we really can't be too safe in this climate. Keep up the good fight. Editing Wikipedia is not a crime. Best, ~Pbritti (talk)19:47, 21 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination ofSergei Makarov (ice hockey, born 1964) for deletion

The article will be discussed atWikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sergei Makarov (ice hockey, born 1964) until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. Juan Gallastegui

[edit]

I am shocked by the result ofthe deletion of Mr Gallastegui's article. It is pretty clear he does not meet the notability criteria for musicians, yet it was kept.

1. Multiple independent publications –✅ yes
2. Chart success – ❌ no recordings by Mr Gallastegui
3. Record certification – ❌ no recordings by Mr Gallastegui
4. Tour coverage – ❌ no tours by Mr Gallastegui
5. Multiple albums on notable labels – ❌ no recordings by Mr Gallastegui
6. Ensemble or membership – ❌ only amateur-level orchestras listed and workshops
7. Representative of a style or scene – ❌ no
8. Major music awards – ❌ none
9. Competition wins – ❌ none
10. Notable media work – ❌ none
11. National radio/TV rotation – ❌ Music placed in rotation by a major national network.
12. Featured broadcast subject – ❌ no TV appearances.

This entry should not exist. The entries are about minor merits. Not every musician with a mention on a paper deserves an article on Wikipedia. Thank you.Theclassicalmusicwriter (talk)13:06, 30 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

While it's clear you put a lot of effort in copyediting inlast month's drive, unfortunately for you, two-thirds of your list (which is anything not tagged with *O or *R) shouldn't have been counted as they were not tagged with{{copyedit}} beforehand. Fortunately, it would actually result in ahigher word count than the one you initally keyed in. Information icon Hello. You recently removed aBiographies of Living Persons PROD without adding a reliable source. Please don't remove these Biographies of Living Persons PRODs from articles unless they contain at least onereliable source. If this was a mistake, don't worry, it has been replaced. If you oppose the deletion of an article under this process, please consider adding reliable sources to the article orcommenting at the respective talk page.I noticed you recently tagged the BLP articlesPavlos Logaras,Lachezar Mladenov,Pavel Kolev,Toufik Mouyet, andSamuel Ojong to PROD as unsourced. However, you had previously removed BLPPROD templates from those articles during an attempt to search for sources. Per theWP:BLPPROD policy:BLP deletion template may be removedonly after the biography contains a reliable source that supports at least one statement made about the person in the article (emphasis added). Since there were no have reliable sources in the articles and you did not add any, your removal of the BLPPROD templates was wholly improper. I have restored all of the BLPPROD templates. Notability tags on film articles

[edit]

Hello and thank you for your concern regarding a number of unsourced articles. You tagged for notability quite a few film articles recently and most of them were notable in my view; I added sources to most of them. For the record, in general, unsourced film stubs created by Dr. Blofeld, Lord Cornwallis and Lugnuts, -to cite only three of the most prolific page creators on this website- are, from my experience, almost always notable. In very rare cases, they can be redirected to the director -or to a list, at worst, because off-line sources are hard to check.I am inviting you to check the sources in corresponding articles in other languages when they exist, when you find such articles lacking sources; if you don't have the possibility to do so and really think those films do not appear notable, please consider adding the category Film(s)/Movie(s) in the template by adding one of those keywords in the parameter1=film; seeTemplate:Notability#Parameters, to avoid having them lost among the ocean of unsorted articles with topics of unclear notability; this is a way to put them on the radar of interested users, who may thus solve the problem more rapidly. Thank you for your attention to this matter!e.ux23:01, 29 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question aboutIrene Estrada article

[edit]

Hiya! I saw you left a comment on theAfD discussion for Irene Estrada, expressing that there was low-quality local sources used in the article that could be removed through the normal editing process. I created this article, and am not all that familiar with the intracicies of local newspapers in the Bronx. I appreciate that you might not have the time, especially given that the article might be removed, but could you tell me which sources in specific you think should be removed or are less reliable? I'd like to improve the article and it would be helpful to know of any shortcomings :) --LivelyRatification (talk)21:30, 22 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
