Wikipedia and copyright

[edit]

Control copyright icon Hello ArchimedesTheInventor, and welcome to Wikipedia. Your additions toQuern-stone have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in thepublic domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under asuitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, seeWikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoidcopyright andplagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate asmall amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with doublequotation marks (") and cite the source using aninline citation. You can read about this atWikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See alsoHelp:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all informationin your own words and structure, in properparaphrase. Following the source's words too closely can createcopyright problems, so it is not permitted here; seeWikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources toverify the information and to demonstrate that the content is notoriginal research.
  • Our primary policy on using copyrighted content isWikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to reviewWikipedia:Copy-paste.
  • Ifyou own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, youmay be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable,to the world, into thepublic domain (PD) or under asuitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. SeeWikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Invery rare cases (that is, for sources that are PD or compatibly licensed) itmay be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help atWikipedia:Media copyright questions, thehelp desk or theTeahouse before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sourcesmay not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If youdo confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; seeWikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps inWikipedia:Translation#How to translate. See alsoWikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must beblocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. —Diannaa (talk)14:31, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Information iconWelcome to Wikipedia. We appreciateyour contributions, but in one of your recent edits toList of Chinese inventions, it appears that you have addedoriginal research, which is against Wikipedia's policies. Original research refers to material—such as facts, allegations, ideas, and personal experiences—for which no reliable, published sources exist; it also encompassescombining published sources in a way to imply something that none of them explicitly say. Please be prepared to cite areliable source for all of your contributions. You can have a look at thetutorial on citing sources.Your source does not call them an invention, this looks like your own interpretation.Doug Wellertalk05:32, 18 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I'm fairly new at this and not familiar with the rules. What about a source says something like "X was invented in China in 100AD"? But another source gives an example in which X was found in Babylon in 500 BC, but didn't call it an invention? What should take precedence when this occurs? I thought the latter would take precedence but it sounds like you are saying the former should take precedence over the lattertalk 24:44, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
Presumably they both meetWP:RS, I'd first look for other sources. I'd also look at the dates. I'd certainly never say something was invented later than it was found somewhere. And don't forget that something can be invented in more than one place, so you can have something which was originally invented on one continent and then independently invented elsewhere. Frankly this 'invented' thing is a minefield, with so many countries or ethnic groups, etc wanting to claim inventions. Right now with its Hindutva government India is doing this. Next time "ping" me, eg {{re|Doug Weller}} but note you can't fix a broken ping, you need to start over with a new signed post.Doug Wellertalk11:43, 18 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution

[edit]

Information icon Thank you foryour contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text fromList of Chinese inventions intoErlitou culture. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere,Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in anedit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying andlinking to the copied page, e.g.,copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted{{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. Please provide attribution for this duplication if it has not already been supplied by another editor, and if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, you should provide attribution for that also. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons atWikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. If you are the sole author of the prose that was copied, attribution is not required. —Diannaa (talk)12:20, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
