Ar-

[edit]

WeCan't use Prod process, because it was previously atWP:AfD. Deprodding. Would you object to a basic redirect? What do you want merged? Please be exact and specific.Bearian (talk)09:21, 27 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note. I'm still re-learning how to edit/tag appropriately after a 16 year hiatus.
I think redirecting to aromatic compound makes more sense than a redirect to aryl. The fact thataryl andarene are derived from the same root ofaromatic can be noted there, though I haven't found a good source for this etymology.
This is what I would write (will repost to Ar- talk page too)
"The rootar- fromaromatic is shared by classes of molecules likearenes (all aromatic molecules) oraryls (aromatic funcional groups)."Anonrfjwhuikdzz (talk)02:33, 28 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi Anonrfjwhuikdzz! I noticedyour contributions and wanted to welcome you to the Wikipedia community.

I've noticed that you've expressed an interest in theArab–Israeli conflict. Unfortunately, due to a history of conflict and disruptive editing it has been designated acontentious topic and is subject to somestrict rules.

The rule that affects you most as a new or IP editor is theprohibition on making any edit related to the Arab–Israel conflict, which includes discussing articles on talk pages, unless you are logged into an account that is at least 30 days old and has made at least 500 edits.

This prohibition isbroadly construed, so it includes edits such as adding the reaction of a public figure concerning the conflict to their article or noting the position of a company or organization as it relates to the conflict.

The exception to this rule is that you mayrequest a specific change to an article on the talk page of that article or atthis page. Please ensure that your requested edit complies with ourneutral point of view andreliable sourcing policies, and if the edit is about a living person our policies onbiographies of living people as well.

Any edits you make contrary to these rules are likely to be reverted, and repeated violations can lead to you beingblocked from editing.

Introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

You have recently edited a page related totheArab–Israeli conflict, a topic designated ascontentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics anddoesnot imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to ascontentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by theArbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipediaadministrators have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should editcarefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

Additionally, you must be logged-in, have500 edits and an account age of 30 days, and are not allowed to make more than 1 revert within 24 hours on any page within this topic.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topicsprocedures, you may ask them at thearbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topichere. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the{{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Information icon Hello andwelcome to Wikipedia. When you add content totalk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, such as atWikipedia:Articles for deletion/Operation Overgrow, please be sure tosign your posts (but never when editing articles). There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add fourtildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment, or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button located above the edit window.

Acid anhydride. No acyl variety.--Smokefoot (talk)19:13, 27 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Smokefoot My understanding is that the NO2 group leftover after ripping off a hydroxy group from nitric acid is considered an acyl, so N2O5 is an inorganic acid anhydride. CO2 on the other hand lacks the R-O-R linkage that defines an acid anhydride. The acid anhydride of carbonic acid would be dicarbonic acid, though I believe that molecule is still only theoretical.Anonrfjwhuikdzz (talk)20:03, 27 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I dont think that many professional chemists would consider NO or NO+ to be an acyl, but I can see where you are coming from. Greenwood and Earnshaw's book also mentions the following anhydrides:F2O, Cl2O, Cl2O7, Br2O3.
One anhydride of carbonic acid would indeed be dicarbonic acid, the conjugate acid ofdicarbonate and one product of the hydrolysis ofdimethyl dicarbonate, which is well known. Another anhydride of carbonic acid is CO2, the product of the degradation of the polymer [CO2]n. That theme has probably been well investigated computationally. But I digress, and I confess to being inexpert.
My main point is that "acid anhydride", which is kind of archaic terminology, is somewhat common outside of the confines of organic chemistry.--Smokefoot (talk)00:17, 28 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I agree most professional chemists would only consider organics when thinking about acyl groups, but I think that is more an educational bias in which the concept of an acyl group is only discussed as a part of OChem. All of the other anhydrides mentioned by Greenwood + Earnshaw meet the definition of an acid anhydride from what I've read (hypofluorous, hypochlorous, perchloric, and bromous acids for you examples, respectively). CO2 still does not meet the definition of an anhydride, though it is certainly a dehydrated form of carbonic acid.Anonrfjwhuikdzz (talk)03:28, 28 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
