Tech News

  • There will be no Tech News issue next week. The next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 2 September 2019.

Problems

  • Advanced item Some abuse filters stopped working because of a code change. Only variables for the current action will work. Variables defined inside a branch may not work outside of that branch. You canread more to see how to fix the filters.
  • Only six accounts can be created from oneIP address per day. Between 12 August and August 15 this was two accounts per day. This was because of a security issue. It is now six accounts per day again.[1]

Changes later this week

  • Only a limited number of accounts can be created from oneIP address. An IP address can bewhitelisted so that it can create as many accounts as needed. This is useful at events where many new persons learn to edit. IP addresses that are whitelisted for this reason will also not showCAPTCHAs when you create accounts. This will happen on Wednesday.[2]
  • Recurrent item Thenew version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 20 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 21 August. It will be on all wikis from 22 August (calendar).

Meetings

  • Recurrent itemAdvanced item You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on21 August at 15:00 (UTC). Seehow to join.

Future changes

  • There is anRFC about creating a new global user group with the right to editabuse filters. This will be used to fix broken filters and make sure all filters will still work when software changes happen. You canread more and comment.
  • Special:Contributions/newbies will no longer be working. This is because of performance reasons. It showed edits by new accounts. You can see this in the recent changes feed instead.[3]

You recently blockedCole2407, but an IPposted this to their talk page. Then they immediately replaced the whole page withthis.
I don't know what to make of it.MJLTalk02:49, 28 August 2019 (UTC)

Recent changes

  • You can use the newtermbox interface if you edit Wikidata on a mobile device. This is to edit labels, descriptions and aliases easier on the mobile pages.[4]
  • Recurrent item Thenew version of MediaWiki has been deployed during the last week.
  • The previously announced change of positions of the "Wikidata item" link on all wikis has been rollbacked due to unexpected cache issues.[5]
  • The limit for rollbacks has been increased from 10 to 100 rollbacks per minute.[6]
  • The advanced version of the edit review pages (Recent Changes, Watchlist, and Related Changes) now include two new filters. These filters are for "All contents" and "All discussions". They will filter the view to just those namespaces. However the "All discussions" filter does not include pseudo talk pages, like discussions that are in theProject: orWikipedia: namespaces. But it will include changes happening onProject talk: or theWikipedia talk:.[7]

Changes later this week

  • Recurrent item Thenew version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 September. It will be on all wikis from 5 September (calendar).
  • When you log in, the software checks your password to see if it follows thePassword policy. From this week, it will also complain if your password is one of the most common passwords in the world. If your password is not strong enough, please consider tochange your password for astronger password.[8]

Quick Questions

Hi Dear admin

i'm dedicating my work to wikipedia and creating different articles on hot topics / edits etc , i want to know how to check if the pages are patrolled ? do i need to submit or add some kinds of tag on page or am i missing something ? kindly clarify do page creator should add patrol tag or editors do it themselves.

Thanks— Precedingunsigned comment added byMemonBhai (talkcontribs)13:54, 10 September 2019 (UTC)

Hi,
Yes, new pages are patrolled as we need to watch out for vandalism, copy vios etc. I would suggest that you readthis as it will explain all about new pages and patrolling.--5 albert square (talk)19:39, 10 September 2019 (UTC)

September 2019 GOCE Newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors September 2019 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the September newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since June 2019.

June election: Reidgreg was chosen as lead coordinator, and is being assisted by Baffle gab1978, Miniapolis, Tdslk, and first-time coordinator Twofingered Typist. Jonesey95 took a respite after serving for six years. Thanks to everyone who participated!

June Blitz: From 16 to 22 June, we copy edited articles on the themes of nature and the environment along withrequests. 12 participating editors completed 35 copy edits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are availablehere.

July Drive: The year's fourth backlog-elimination drive was a great success, clearing all articles tagged in January and February, and bringing the copy-editing backlog to a low of five months and a record low of585 articles while also completing 48 requests. Of the 30 people who signed up, 29 copyedited at least one article, a participation level last matched in May 2015. Final results and awards are listedhere.

August Blitz: From 18 to 24 August, we copy edited articles tagged in March 2019 and requests. 12 participating editors completed 26 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are availablehere.

Progress report: As of 03:00, 23 September 2019 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors had processed 413 requests since 1 January. The backlog of tagged articles stood at 599 articles, close to our record month-end low of 585.

Requests page: We are experimenting with automated archiving of copy edit requests; a discussionon REQ Talk (permalinked) initiated byBobbychan193 has resulted inZhuyifei1999 writinga bot script for the Guild. Testing is now underway and is expected to be completed by 3 October; for this reason,no manual archiving of requests should be done until the testing period is over. We will thenassess the bot's performance and discuss whether to make this arrangement permanent.

September Drive: Our current backlog-elimination drive is open until 23:59 on 30 September (UTC) and is open to all copy editors. Sign up today!

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators,Baffle gab1978,Miniapolis,Reidgreg,Tdslk andTwofingered Typist.

IP block exempt questions

Thank you so much for the IP block exemption! I just have one question: since the block on my IP is set to expire on January 28, 2022, and you only granted me 12 months, would I have to go through an unblocking process again next year?Jayab31410:17, 10 October 2019 (UTC)

I also just now realized that the IP block exemption isn't global and instead just on English Wikipedia. How would I be able to get a global IP block exemption because I know I am not using my IP as a webhost, and if I am, how do I fix that?Jayab31410:45, 10 October 2019 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) I reviewed your request as a CU: if you need it in a year, which you very well may not, you can request renewal. You don’t really edit other projects, so stewards are likely to view the en.wiki IPBE as sufficient. Local IPBE grants you the ability to edit through global blocks on en.wiki. Also: the IP you are using is a colocation provider/webhost , but based on your previous editing history, I think there’s a reason for it, which is why I was fine with granting IPBE.TonyBallioni (talk)16:28, 10 October 2019 (UTC)
@TonyBallioni: Well quite recently, I’ve been uploading images on Wikimedia to use on tropical cyclone articles (Hurricane Dorian, Hurricane Humberto), and I currently have a few photos saved for Typhoon Hagibis that I would like to upload.Jayab31420:07, 10 October 2019 (UTC)
-revi, see above.TonyBallioni (talk)20:10, 10 October 2019 (UTC)
NavPopup user right list says...ipblock-exempt, reviewer,global-ipblock-exempt and log says Ruslik0 did it yesterday. — regards,Revi00:27, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
@TonyBallioni: Ok final question I promise. I was really confused when I first realized I was blocked because the pop-up said that the block started on August 1, but I never was unable to edit until just a few days ago. Do you know why that is?Jayab31401:02, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
Jayab314, based on your edit history, I suspect the location you ordinarily edit at implemented using a colocation provider for internet services. These can have legitimate uses, but they’re also used as the backbone for most commercial VPNs, which is why the range was blocked. You have never edited from the IP you were getting the block message from.TonyBallioni (talk)01:14, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
@TonyBallioni: Yes, but on October 8, I received the first pop-up informing me I could not edit (I must note I was also logged in at that time). I was just a little confused as it told me the block started on August 1, but I neveractually got blocked from editing until October 8.Jayab31401:20, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
See my comment above. I think the location you ordinarily edit from implemented a networking change.TonyBallioni (talk)02:01, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
