Please comment onWikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pedro Perebal

Hi. I'm a little confused now about the logic some editors are using to applyWP:BIO1E in this article. The admin who reopened the discussion,A Train, said that the event BIO1E referred to was the media interviews,SMcCandlish said that the achievement of learning many languages was the event. I think that some editors are really stretching the "event" definition to the breaking point in order to apply BIO1E to this article, but don't know what to think because a few editors now have brought BIO1E to the table. Can you provide some insights in the discussion, specially relating to BIO1E and the applicability of "people involved in one event" in this article? Thanks in advance.Thinker78 (talk)04:57, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

I think I already addressed this at the original discussion (technically at its talk page, here). In much more detail: "Event" doesn't have a narrow definition at BIO1E. It's not explicitly limited to concerts, riots, tournaments, and landslides. Importantly, some very broad, generalizedWP:BIO rules are in that section, and are not tied in any way to "events" in the sense you've been thinking (like concerts, riots, tournaments, and landslides), and this proves that the meaning of "event" there is very broadly construed (i.e. something that can be put on a timeline and doesn't expand to such a big chunk of the timeline that the concept "event" no longer makes sense at all). Some examples of the general material:
  • "Editors are advised to be aware of issues of weight and to avoid the creation of unnecessary pseudo-biographies, especially of living people."
  • "It is important to remember that 'notable' is not a synonym for 'famous'."
These provisions are frequently cited in contexts that have nothing to do with events like concerts, riots, tournaments, and landslides.

Further proof of very broad scope/definition of "event" is the fact that that same section addresses small "events" (in various senses) within the life of a bio subject, not just the role of a bio subject within some external event of much grander scope than the individual. So, an "event" can be an entire war (big), a broken ankle (little), the earning of a four-year university degree (little), a controversial Twitter post (little), the public controversy about global warming (big), etc., etc. For this particular case, I'm not sure it matters at all what you want to consider an "event" in the context of Perebal. There's just arguably nothing encyclopedic here. He got written up in a few Guatemalan sources as having learned 6 languages (sometimes exaggerated to 10), but this isn't any kind of record, even in Guatemala, and it was mostly just "gee whiz, this is odd for a guy who's a security guard". There's nothing likely to be lastingly significant about this alleged notability, which seems to be localized.

The overall arguments against the article areWP:N,WP:NOT#NEWS, andWP:NOT#INDISCRIMINATE. You could strike every mention of BIO1E in that AfD, and the deletion case would not be significantly weakened. (By the same token, adding BIO1E doesn't make it much stronger, either, now that I think about it.)

I would agree with whatSMcCandlish has said above there. I had a look at the article and I had a quick Google search, I honestly can't see anything that would make the subject notable. It honestly looks like a case of 15 minutes of fame.--5 albert square (talk)13:53, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

Outwith

Ah, you Brits are so quaint. According to my quick online research, outwith is mainly Scottish and northern England. Is it used in other parts of Britain as well, or do you just like it because it sounds so 19th century literary? --Bbb23 (talk)18:03, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

@Bbb23: I was actually going to look into that word and its usage patterns. Did you find anything good? While it's easy to find a definition, it's not as easy to find the full scope and limits of the usage, either geographically speaking or in sentence constructions. — SMcCandlish¢ 😼 19:32, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
I believe I've shared the full extent of my knowledge of the word, but I now know it's not a word I would ever want to be without.--Bbb23 (talk)19:43, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
@Bbb23: "without" has taken on a more general meaning of "lacking" rather than the opposite of "within" over the years (I use it as the opposite of "within" sometimes and get baffled looks), so "outwith" can come in handy when you want to be clear, though it's not ever so common in my experience.HJ Mitchell |Penny for your thoughts?20:30, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
My comment about without was a joke.--Bbb23 (talk)21:07, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
HahaBbb23 Yes we are very quaint aren't we! I think it is used in other parts of the UK but not very commonly. Not a word I could ever do without. Just out of interest, why are you looking into this?--5 albert square (talk)05:24, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
Your question at the RfA. I'd never seen the word before. Also, it gave me an excuse to say hi.--Bbb23 (talk)11:52, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
Ah I forgot I used it in Peter's RFA! I'm about to try and use it on Jimbo's talk page - I'll try and use it in an SPI sometime. Oh and hi to you tooBbb23--5 albert square (talk)16:08, 2 June 2018 (UTC)

Tech News: 2018-23

Latesttech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you.Translations are available.

Recent changes

  • TheMonoBook skin has been optimised for mobile devices. It now looks different.[1]
  • Planet Wikimedia collects blogs about Wikimedia. It will now use theRawdogfeed aggregator to do this instead ofPlanet.[2][3]
  • Redirect links inSpecial:WhatLinksHere now link to the original page and not the target page. This was done earlier and changed the used messages on some pages. This was a problem for wikis that customized the message. A new change fixed this by using the old messages with one more parameter for customization. Wikis that already changed their customized messages will have to move the customization back again.[4]

Problems

  • You will not be able to edit some wikis between 06:00 and 06:30 UTC on 13 June. You can see ifyour wiki is one of them.
  • MassMessage did not work 24–28 May. This is also why last week's Tech News was late.[5]

Changes later this week

  • Recurrent item Thenew version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 5 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 6 June. It will be on all wikis from 7 June (calendar).

Meetings

  • Recurrent item You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on5 June at 18:30 (UTC). Seehow to join.
  • Recurrent itemAdvanced item You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on6 June at 15:00 (UTC). Seehow to join.

June 2018 GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors June 2018 News

Welcome to the June 2018 GOCE newsletter, in which you will find Guild updates since theFebruary edition. Progress continues to be made on the copyediting backlog, which has been reduced to 7 months and reached a new all-time low.Requests continue to be handled efficiently this year, with 272 completed by the end of May (an average completion time of 10.5 days). Fewer than 10% of these waited longer than 20 days, and the longest wait time was 29 days.

Wikipedia in general, and the Guild in particular, experienced a deep loss with the death on 20 March ofCorinne. Corinne (a GOCE coordinator since 1 July 2016) was a tireless aide on the requests page, and her peerless copyediting is a part of innumerable GAs and FAs. Her good cheer, courtesy and tact are very much missed.

March drive: The goal was to removeJune, July and August 2017 from our backlog and allFebruary 2018 Requests (a total of 219 articles). This drive was an outstanding success, and by the end of the month all but eight of these articles were cleared. Of the 33 editors who signed up, 19 recorded 277 copy edits (425,758 words).

April blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 15 through 21 April, focusing onRequests and the last eight articles tagged inAugust 2017. At the end of the week there were only 17 pending requests, with none older than 17 days. Of the nine editors who signed up, eight editors completed 22 copy edits (62,412 words).

May drive: We set out to removeSeptember, October and November 2017 from our backlog and allApril 2018Requests (a total of 298 articles). There was great success this month with the backlog more than halved from 1,449 articles at the beginning of the month to arecord low of 716 articles. Officially, of the 20 who signed up, 15 editors recorded 151 copy edits (248,813 words).

Coordinator elections: It's election time again.Nominations for Guild coordinators (who will serve a six-month term for the second half of 2018) have begun, and will close at 23:59 UTC on 15 June. All Wikipedia editors in good standing are eligible, and self-nominations are encouraged.Voting will take place between 00:01 UTC on 16 June and 23:59 UTC on 30 June.

June blitz: Stay tuned for this one-week copy-editing blitz, which will take place in mid-June.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators:Corinne,Jonesey95,Miniapolis,Reidgreg andTdslk.

User "RijonKhan"

This user falsely claims on his userpage to be a sysop of Bengali Wikipedia (I see no such credentials inSpecial:CentralAuth). His statements about being "with Wikipedia since 2015 but I started contributing in 2008 on Bengali Wikipedia & Meta" are equally false, as I suspect his claims of being a Wikimedia committee member and board member. I am convinced that he has copied another legitmate user's userpage content and passing it off as his own. Don't know if its just incompetence or intentional fraud, but either way I believe this could be grounds for a lengthier block. What do you think? --Drm310🍁 (talk)18:58, 17 June 2018 (UTC)

Sorry, I didn't see the notice at the top of your talk page... I hope that you are well. I will askMER-C to weigh in since he evaluated an unblock request from this same user. --Drm310🍁 (talk)19:51, 17 June 2018 (UTC)

  • Some old web browsers will not be able to read the Wikimedia wikis. This is because they use an insecure way to connect to them. This means that we get less security for everyone else too. This affects about 0.08% of all traffic to the Wikimedia wikis. This affects for example those who read Wikipedia on aPlayStation 3.[14][15]
  • Thenew filters for edit review tools and interface for watchlists will leavebeta. Because there is no new MediaWiki version this week it will happen on 25 June for most wikis. For the rest it will happen in early July.[16][17]
  • Advanced item All wikis that have not already done so will switch to use theRemex parsing library on 5 July. This isto replace Tidy. Youcan help fix remaining errors.[18]
