Problems

  • On 22 February thewikipedia.org portal did not work for an hour. This was because of a problem with a JavaScript file.[5]

Changes this week

  • You will be able to use<chem> to write chemical formulas in the visual editor. Previously this only worked in the wikitext editor.[6]
  • Thenew version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 28 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 March. It will be on all wikis from 2 March (calendar).

Meetings

  • You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on28 February at 20:00 (UTC). Seehow to join.

Future changes

  • You can soon upload 3D files to Commons. The file formats areAMF andSTL. The plan is for this to work later this week but it could be later.[7]

Wikipedia:Violent Factionalizing Debate

In a close, divided discussion such as the one you just closed, I think it'd be appropriate to leave some reasoning why you came to that decision. (Full discloure: I disagree with your closure and believe there's consensus for deletion.) --Tavix(talk)23:05, 27 February 2017 (UTC)

Yes, I agree fully with whatNyttend said--5 albert square (talk)23:19, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
Then you should leave a !vote explaining "Keep per Nyttend" instead of an inappropriate close. Would you mind if you did that? --Tavix(talk)23:21, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
Sure, give me a couple of moments :)--5 albert square (talk)23:24, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
That's not what you did though. You simply expanded upon your close instead of reverting it. Again, that's simply your opinion of the redirect instead of an assessment of consensus. A closure should never be "per someone", that's reserved for !votes. --Tavix(talk)23:43, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
Sorry I misunderstood what you said, that's what happens when you try to do too many things at once.--5 albert square (talk)01:00, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
Now that you've officially left a !vote, I'll consider youinvolved and officially reopen the discussion, noting that you expressed willingness to do so. --Tavix(talk)01:13, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
But I'm not though. I left it after I closed it because you asked me to explain my decision which I was happy to do. Never mind I'll link to what you said above in the discussion. Thanks.--5 albert square (talk)06:38, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
By the way, I didn't ask you to leave a !vote. I'm simply saying that by closing something "per someone" is your opinion and not an assessment of consensus, so it would be better for you to leave a !vote instead of closing the discussion. In fact, I'd rather you either don't leave one or leave a delete !vote. (I believe that the redirect characterizes one of our deletion processes asviolent, which is not a good message to send to the community, and there's no other benefit the redirect is providing.) --Tavix(talk)14:29, 28 February 2017 (UTC)

Tech News: 2017-10

Latesttech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you.Translations are available.

Recent changes

  • You can now search on English, French, Hebrew and Greek wikis and find words even if you forget thediacritics. It also works if you use diacritics in your search but the wiki doesn't.[10]
  • When you use the mobile view and click on a link to an article in another language you will see that article in the mobile view. Previously it changed to the desktop view.[11]

Problems

  • Some watchlist gadgets didn't work for a period of time last week. This has now been fixed.[12]
  • Admins who click on "mass delete" on a user'sSpecial:Contributions will be taken directly to a list pages created by that user. It has worked like this before, but not lately.[13]

Changes this week

  • The way you switch between wikitext and the visual editors in the desktop view has changed. It is now a drop-down menu. This is the same as in the mobile view.[14]
  • The "flag the edit in the abuse log" checkbox will be removed from theabuse filter interface. This is because the edits are always flagged in the abuse log.[15]
  • Thenew version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 March. It will be on all wikis from 9 March (calendar).

Flying lemur

Back in 2016 you deleted theFlying lemur redirect as it had been taggedR3. I think that it was a valid redirect. While the target,Colugo, are not lemurs and don't fly I did see that the redirectflying lemurs leads there and within the article there are links toPhilippine flying lemur andSunda flying lemur. All in all just a long way round to say that I have restored the redirect. Cheers.CambridgeBayWeather,Uqaqtuq (talk),Sunasuttuq21:17, 12 March 2017 (UTC)

Changes this week

  • You will be able to show references from<references /> tags in more than one column on your wiki. This is the list of footnotes for the sources in the article. How many columns you see will depend on how big your screen is. On some wikis, some templates already do this. Templates that use<references /> tags will need to be updated, and then later the change can happen for all reference lists.[16][17]
  • Thenew version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 March. It will be on all wikis from 16 March (calendar).

Meetings

  • You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on14 March at 19:00 (UTC). Seehow to join.

Future changes

  • Some oldweb browsers will not be able to useJavaScript on Wikimedia wikis in the future. If you have an old web browser on your computer you can upgrade to a newer version.[18]
  • CSS in templates will be stored in a separate page in the future.[19][20]

Problems

  • On 15 March some interwiki links to other languages were not correctly sorted. This has been fixed. If you still see pages where the interwiki links are not sorted as they should be, they should be fixed automatically with time or you can edit the page and save it without changing anything. If this doesn't work, pleasereport it.[26]

Changes this week

  • When you edit with the visual editor, you will be able to switch the direction you write in from right-to-left to left-to-right as you are editing. This is especially important for editors who edit in languages that write from right to left. You can do this with a tool in the editing menu. You can also use the keyboard shortcutCtrl+Shift+X on PCs orCmd+Shift+X on Macs.[27]
  • Thenew version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 March. It will be on all wikis from 23 March (calendar).

Meetings

  • You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on21 March at 19:00 (UTC). Seehow to join.
