      High Chief,Kalaimanokahoʻowaha byJohn Webber

TheRulers of the Hawaiian Islands (noho aliʻi o ko Hawaiʻi Pae ʻAina) are a line ofnative Hawaiians who were independent rulers of various subdivisions of the land andislands of Hawaii. Their genealogy is traced to Hānalaʻanui and others.[1] Beginning between 1 and 600 AD, the firstPolynesians began to settle the islands. By the first one thousand year history, the settlements were living along the parameters of the islands and beginning to cultivate their own foods in gardens, and within another 500 years would begin to spread inward to the inner lands of the islands when religion began to become more emphasized.[2]

      Frequently asked questions:
      • If you are new and want to know why you cannot edit semi protected articles, that is simply because Wikipedia has one other small hurtle before you can edit normally. You must first make a handful of edits to demonstrate that you can edit constructively and to engage with the community for ten edits. After that you can edit semi protected articles but not fully protected articles. Those can only be edited by administrators. Full protection is rare and generally doesn't last long.
      • If you have interests in writing, researching or other areas to contribute but do not know where to start, try a talk page! Mine is open for questions however, if you go to any Wikipedia article that you have an interest in, the article itself has a talk page as well. There you can look through the recent discussions to get a perspective on how editors are approaching the article. You can ask other editors questions about the article, sources, images, etc.. But I encourage a quick look through our basic set of guidelines directly below in the lavender bar titled Wikipedia Help Pages. They can guide you further:

      • How can someone new get established at Wikipedia? The answer is simple, work well with other editors, contribute constructive contributions, do not "edit war" (any three reverts of the same material, whether in whole or in part, or an aggressive revert that disrupts the project or article's work) and try have a good time and enjoy what you are doing.
      • There seem to be an awful lot of aggressive editors. How does a new editor handle that situation? First, perception is everything...mainly your own. Don't take everything said too seriously unless you are being personally attacked. You can report behavioral problems toWP:ANI or to any administrator individually from theWikipedia:List of administrators. However, the best approach is always to try and engage the editor honestly and with civility. In Hawaii we call thisAloha. Basically, it is one of thecore pillars of Wikipedia. There are five pillars but the fourth pillar should never be ignored:

      Fourth pillar
Editors should treat each other with respect and civility: Respect your fellowWikipedians, even when you disagree. Apply Wikipediaetiquette, and don't engage inpersonal attacks. Seekconsensus, avoidedit wars, andnever disrupt Wikipedia to illustrate a point. Act in good faith, andassume good faith on the part of others. Be open andwelcoming to newcomers. If a conflict arises, discuss it calmly on the nearesttalk pages, followdispute resolution, and remember that there are 7,096,826 articles on the English Wikipedia to work on and discuss.

If you cannot agree on content such as an image or text you may use a number of venues to ask for assistance. A full list (including all behavioral options) are listed at:Wikipedia:Requests.
