Urubatão Calvo Nunes (31 March 1931 – 24 September 2010), simply known asUrubatão, was a Brazilianfootballer and manager. Mainly adefensive midfielder, he could also play as acentral defender.
Urubatão had his playing career mainly associated withSantos. As a manager, he worked mostly in theSão Paulo state, notably managingAmérica-SP four times.
Born inRio de Janeiro, Urubatão joined the youth setup ofBonsucesso in 1947. He signed his first professional contract in 1950, and moved toSantos in 1954.[1]
Urubatão moved abroad in 1961, signing forClub América. He returned to his home country, and representedJabaquara andPonte Preta before retiring in 1965, aged 34.[1][2]
Urubatão played one match for theBrazil national football team, a 1–2Roca Cup loss againstArgentina at theMaracanã Stadium on 7 July 1957.[3]
After retiring Urubatão became a manager, with his firstSérie A side beingFortaleza in 1974 and 1976. He returned to Santos in 1977, coaching the club in 26 matches.[4]
Urubatão was subsequently in charge of a number of clubs, notably managingAmérica-SP on five occasions,[5]Portuguesa,Sport Recife,Londrina (where he won the 1981Campeonato Paranaense),[6]Goiás andCoritiba,[7] but mainly worked in theSão Paulo state.
Urubatão died on 24 September 2010, aged 77, due to abrain tumor.[4]
