Uri Caine (born June 8, 1956) is an Americanclassical andjazz pianist and composer fromPhiladelphia.

Biography

Early years

Caine was born on June 8, 1956, inPhiladelphia, to Burton Caine (1928–2023), a professor atTemple Law School,[1] and poet Shulamith Wechter Caine.[2] He began playing piano at age seven, and studied with French jazz pianistBernard Peiffer at 12.[3] He later studied at theUniversity of Pennsylvania, where he came under the tutelage ofGeorge Crumb. He also gained a greater familiarity with classical music in this period and worked at clubs in Philadelphia.

Caine played professionally after 1981, and by 1985 had his recording debut with the Rochester-Gerald Veasley band. In the 1980s, he moved to New York City, where he continues to live. His solo recording debut was in 1992. He also appeared on aklezmer album (Don Byron Plays the Music ofMickey Katz, 1993)[4] and other recordings with modern jazz musiciansDon Byron andDave Douglas, among many others.[5]

Later years

Caine has recorded 16 mostly classical albums. His 1997 jazz tribute toGustav Mahler received an award from the German Mahler Society, while outraging some jury members.[6][7] Caine has also reworkedBach'sGoldberg Variations,Beethoven'sDiabelli Variations, as well as music byWagner,Schumann andMozart.

He was Composer-in-Residence of theLos Angeles Chamber Orchestra from 2005 to 2009. He became aUnited States Artists Fellow in 2010.[8]

In 2012, he performed with the Armenian State Chamber Orchestra inYerevan, Armenia,[9] and, in 2013 and 2014, was Composer-in-Residence atMannes College.

In 2019, Caine released anoratorio on the life and death ofOctavius Catto.[10]

The Bedrock Project and other collaborations

In 2001, he teamed up with drummer Zach Danziger to conceive an original project fusing livejungle anddrum 'n' bass beats withfusion jazz called "Uri Caine Bedrock 3". They have toured worldwide, including with the New York-basedDJ Olive.

Also in 2001, he released with drummerAhmir "Questlove" Thompson ofThe Roots andChristian McBride an album calledThe Philadelphia Experiment which contains jazz, funk, instrumental hip hop and jazz fusion. This album was produced byAaron Levinson and features collaborations such asPat Martino on guitar and Jon Swana on trumpet.

In 2006, he recorded an album of composition fromJohn Zorn's secondMasada book calledMoloch: Book of Angels Volume 6. In November 2012, Caine collaborated with drummerHan Bennink to release a live album entitledSonic Boom.[11] In 2008 he was special guest of theItalian jazz awards red carpet show inGenoa (Italy) at Teatro di Sant'Agostino.[12]
