Ureo Egawa (江川 宇礼雄,Egawa Ureo; 7 May 1902 – 20 May 1970) was a Japaneseactor active from the 1920s to the 1960s.
Egawa was born inKanagawa Prefecture to a Japanese mother and a German father.[1] His name "Ureo" is a Japanification of his German name "Willy". He joined theTaikatsu film studio in 1920,[1] but not finding stable work, he joined a gang of delinquents. Egawa of this period became the model forTon Satomi's novelJuvenile Delinquent (不良少年,Furyō Shōnen).[1] Putting his life back together, he debuted as a director in 1927, but eventually joined theShochiku studio as an actor, where he starred in films by directors such asYasujirō Ozu andYasujirō Shimazu. He later worked atNikkatsu,Toho andShintoho, before appearing on television in the 1960s, most famously inUltra Q. In his later years, he did charity work to help other mixed-race children.[1]
