TheUniversity of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD;Portuguese:Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro) is apublic university located in the north-eastern city ofVila Real,Portugal.
It became apublic university in 1986, although its history also includes a heritage received from its predecessor, thePolytechnic Institute of Vila Real, created in 1973. This Institute took on a relevant role in the development of the region, and in September 1979, it was converted into theUniversity Institute of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro. It was due to the intense activity in the fields of teaching and scientific and technological research that, less than ten years later, the government granted its status as a qualified University.

The University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto includes four university schools and onepolytechnic school:
All BAs listed below are at major level. The Portuguese-language title,Licenciatura, indicates that they confer an automaticLicensure for working in a particular profession. In spite of this, some professions may additionally require enrolling in specific professional orders. All engineering, architecture, and medical degrees of the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro are recognised ("reconhecidos") by these professional orders, and students completing a Bachelor of Arts at this university are exempted from additional examinations for access to those orders. Bothuniversity andpolytechnic types of degree are awarded in UTAD, however, most are University.
TheNursing degree is given at the School of Health (ESS;Portuguese:Escola Superior de Saúde).
