Un Certain Regard (French:[œ̃sɛʁtɛ̃ʁəɡaʁ]; 'A Certain Glance') is a section of theCannes Film Festival's official selection. It is run at thesalle Debussy, parallel to the competition for thePalme d'Or. This section was introduced in 1978 byGilles Jacob.
The section presents 20 films with more original and daring approaches than the Official Selection, distinguished by their storytelling and/or direction, and often spotlighting emerging or lesser-known filmmakers seeking international recognition.[1]
Since 1998, the section has awarded the Un Certain Regard Prize to one film in the lineup, recognising emerging talent and innovative work.[2] At the1998 Cannes Film Festival,Killer byDarezhan Omirbaev was named the inaugural winner, whileThe Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo by Diego Céspedes is the most recent winner (2025).[3]
In 1998, thePrix un certain regard was introduced to the section to recognize young talent and to encourage innovative and daring works by presenting one of the films with a grant to aid its distribution in France.[4] Since 2005, the prize consists of€30,000 financed by the Groupama GAN Foundation.[5]
