Umberto Maglioli (5 June 1928 – 7 February 1999) was an Italianracing driver, who competed inFormula One at 10Grands Prix from1953 to1957. Inendurance racing, Maglioli was a three-time winner of theTarga Florio.
Maglioli participated in 10Formula One Grands Prix withFerrari,Maserati, andPorsche. He achieved two podiums, and scored 31⁄3 championship points. He participated in theTarga Florio race nineteen times, winning it three times, and theMille Miglia ten times, with the best result being a second place in theLancia Aurelia B20 GT in 1951.[1]
Born inBioglio,Vercelli, he was introduced to racing byGiovanni Bracco and accompanied him on severalMille Miglias andTarga Florios.[1][2] In 1953 he won the Targa (single-handed) for the first time, in aLancia D20, and also thePescara 12hr race, driving aFerrari 375 MM withMike Hawthorn.[2][1] Maglioli also won the lastCarrera Panamericana in 1954, driving theFerrari 375 Plus.[3] The same year he also won the1000 km Buenos Aires (withGiuseppe Farina) and the1000Km Supercortemaggiore at Monza, again with Hawthorn.[2]
He joinedPorsche in 1956 and won the Targa Florio, again single-handed.[2] In 1957 under established rules which allowedF2 cars to enterGrand Prix, Porsche entered two 550RSs for theGerman Grand Prix, one driven by Maglioli and the other byEdgar Barth.[4] Maglioli though failed to finish. Later that year he crashed his Porsche during the Gaisburg hillclimb inAustria. He recuperated in a hospital inSalzburg with leg injuries so severe that doctors initially feared he may not walk again.[5]
In 1964 he won theSebring 12hrs for Ferrari and in1968 scored his third Targa victory (this time withVic Elford) in a worksPorsche 907.[5] Maglioli retired from racing in 1970.[2] He died inMonza in 1999.
